Blair speaking in New York, has accused Iran of backing terrorism and is warning the world faces a situation akin to rising fascism in the 1920s

Blair at the 62nd annual Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York.

Lets make it the 1930's, Wormtongue, and call it correctly — rising fascism is exactly where you are!

(Wormtongue — a wizened figure of a man, with a pale face, heavy lidded eyes and a long pale tongue...

... the wise speak only of what they know, therefore be silent, and keep your forked tongue behind your teeth... )

Or perhaps we should say it's 1929?
Go on, let's just say we're somewhere in the late 1920's
And let's direct our view, not Eastwards, but Westwards
That's it!
Now you've got it
Posse gathering Blair!
For you too!

The Madness of Tony Blair
Matthew Parris

Most of us have experienced the discomfort of watching a friend go off the rails.
At first his oddities are dismissed as eccentricities.
Boys outside house damaged by US
Many men, women and children wounded and killed
An absurd assertion, a lunatic conviction, a sudden enthusiasm or unreasonable fear, are explained as perhaps due to tiredness, or stress, or natural volatility.
We do not want to face the truth that our friend has cracked up.
Finally we can deny it no longer — and then it seems so obvious: the explanation, in retrospect, of so much we struggled to reconcile.
Sometimes the realisation comes fast and suddenly.
It did for me at university when my Arab fellow student Ahmed, who for months had been warning me of the conspiracies of which he suspected we might be victims, pulled me into his room to show me the death-ray he could see shining through his window.
It was somebody’s porch-light.
Likewise, the madness of King George III, which came in spells, was undeniable when it came.
At other times the realisation is a slow, sad dawning of the obvious.
Sometimes it is a friend about whom we worry.
Sometimes it is a prime minister.
I will accept the charge of discourtesy, but not of flippancy, when I ask whether Tony Blair may now have become, in a serious sense of that word, unhinged.
Genius and madness are often allied, and nowhere is this truer than in political leadership.
Great leaders need self-belief in unnatural measure.
Simple fraudsters are rumbled early, but great leaders share with great confidence tricksters a capacity to be more than persuaded, but inhabited, by their cause.
Almost inevitably, an inspirational leader spends important parts of his life certain of the uncertain, convinced of the undemonstrable.
So do the mentally ill.
It can be extremely difficult to distinguish between a person who is sticking bravely to a difficult cause whose truth is far from obvious, and a person who is going crazy.
It took us quite a while to explain David Icke’s beliefs in the only useful way in which they could be explained — and he was on the political fringe.
A national leader commands vastly more respect and will be given the benefit of many more doubts than Mr Icke ever was.
Colleagues, commentators and the wider public are usually late to face up to evidence that the boss has gone berserk, even though the evidence may have been around for quite some time.
There are good reasons for this.
To call somebody mad is bad manners even when fair comment.
Relatives comfort each other after US killing of their children
Many men, women and children wounded and killed
To tackle your opponent’s argument by questioning his sanity can look like a childish copping-out from sensible discussion.
How can the victim answer back?
But the charge is sometimes germane.
It may become the only thing worth considering.
Winston Churchill had lost the plot long before the proper public discussion this deserved got under way.
And I myself believe that one of my political heroes, Margaret Thatcher, began to lose her mental balance well before the end, and before those close to her allowed themselves to consider this explanation of her behaviour.
For me the suspicion first dawned when the then Prime Minister devised for the Lord Mayor’s banquet a dress with such an extravagant train that she needed someone to help her with it into the Mansion House.
This was when she was beginning to refer to herself as “we”, and treating friends who warned her of her fate as treacherous.
A telltale of incipient insanity is when the victim begins to take a Manichaean view of the universe.
There are good reasons why those at the top can go quietly bonkers before their inferiors wake up to the warning signs.
The first is obviously deference.
“The Madness of King Tony” might — I accept — seem an impertinent way of discussing our leader during a war when, whatever application it may have in Tony Blair’s case, it applies to Saddam Hussein in spades.
Beyond deference, however, those at the top of the pyramid who are anxious to impress us with truths which are not obvious have another powerful weapon at their disposal.
They can credibly claim to know more than we can be told.
To the man in the street, the most potent of Mr Blair’s arguments for invading Iraq is that he and George W. Bush are in possession of special intelligence which supports their stand but which cannot be divulged.
And no doubt that is true.
The question is about the amount of support such intelligence lends, not its existence.
Note from your own experience, as well as from the history books, how those with a claim which sounds incredible tend to support it by claiming a private source of information they are unable to share.
Joan of Arc heard voices.
Ahmed said he could feel the lethal qualities of the apparent porch-light and reminded me that his enemies would obviously decoy the ignorant by disguising death-rays in this way.
One or another version of God has been a time-honoured way for madcap leaders to give their actions an authority not apparent to the five senses of their audiences.
Cornered by reality, “private sources” are the last refuge of the deluded.
Is Mr Blair among them?   Let me outline some of my grounds for worry.
Any one of these grounds might be dismissed as negligible, or indicative of nothing more sinister than conviction; but cumulatively I find them worrying.
Medics try to revive victim of US attack
Many men, women and children wounded and killed
Mr Blair has stopped sounding like a career politician.
He has lost the professional polish of a man doing a job, and developed that fierce, quiet intensity which, from long experience of dealing with mad constituents, I know that the slightly cracked share with the genuinely convinced.
He has lost his feel for whom to confront, or when and where, and puts himself into situations (like the slow handclapping by anti-war women) which do not assist his case.
Historians may point to Mr Blair’s private — but publicised — audience with the Pope as an early sign of a dawning unrealism about the perceptions of others.
Did he this week stop for a moment to think what impression would be made on grieving parents by his wild-eyed suggestion (based on misinformation) that two British soldiers had been executed by the Iraqis in cold blood?
Blair’s long-standing tendency to compartmentalise logic (a habit all politicians share to some degree) is now being pushed to extremes.
The speeches the “old” Europeans are making — about giving Iraq more time, accepting gradual progress and not sticking to a literal interpretation of earlier demands — are exactly the speeches Mr Blair himself gives (persuasively) in defence of letting the IRA off the decommissioning hook.
This logic-chopping alarms.
The Prime Minister has lost his sense of how his indignation at Iraqi brutality jars, coming from someone attacking a country whose puny forces are grotesquely outgunned by ours.
His anger at the French (whose position has been consistent and identical to that which Blair held until a year ago) is inexplicable to those of us who are not doctors.
He displays a demented capacity to convince himself that it is the other guy who is cheating.
He has started saying things which are not only unsustainable, but palpably absurd.
The throwaway remark to Parliament that he would ignore Security Council vetoes which were “capricious” or “unreasonable” was more than ill-considered: coming from a trained lawyer it was stark, staring bonkers.
It was breathtaking.
For risibility I would bracket it with Ahmed’s death-ray.
The whole country should have been crying with laughter.
That the British media should have been mesmerised into reporting him in any other way still leaves me dumbfounded.
No sane lawyer could have said what Blair said.
He keeps retreating into a hopeless, desperate optimism: another sign of lunacy.
Hold mattess where young nephew Ali killed by US
Many men, women and children wounded and killed in US attack
He seems to have promised the Americans he could deliver Europe, and told the Europeans he could tame America.
There was scant ground for hope on the first score and none on the second.
The belief that irreconcilables can be reconciled by one’s personal contacts and powers of persuasion is a familiar delusion among people who are not quite right in the head.
While each futile promise is in the process of being demonstrated to be undeliverable, he goes into a sort of nose-tapping, “watch this space” denial.
When finally the promise is abandoned he turns insouciantly away — and makes a new promise.
This week he has been promising to sort out the Americans, and persuade them to let the United Nations supervise the post-conflict administration of Iraq.
He is probably telling the Americans he can sort out the Security Council.
He can do neither.
Meanwhile, he has forgotten that his previous position was that the coalition partners invaded as agents of the UN anyway, so it isn’t up to Washington to give permission.
Any bank manager used to dealing with bankrupts with a pathological shopping habit who have severed contact with arithmetic will recognise the optimism.
Have the rest of the Cabinet tumbled yet to the understanding that this may not be about Iraq at all, but about the Prime Minister?
My guess is that those closest to Mr Blair must be beginning to wonder privately.
It is time people pooled their doubts.

September 15-16, 2007        By ALEXANDER COCKBURN
The General Came to Washington
Blend a war and a presidential campaign and you have a recipe for 200 proof mendacity, as the Petraeus hearings at the start of the week triumphantly proved.
Take the war first.
Into the witness chair in the Senate chamber marched General Petraeus, the blaze of ribbons on his chest suggesting actual combat experience somewhat longer than the modest four years his record discloses.
He was once shot in he chest, it’s true, but that was in a military exercise in the U.S. when a soldier’s gun went off by accident.
Many senior army and navy officers loathe the toadying Petraeus.
According to an amusing column by Gareth Porter of IPS, Admiral William Fallon, chief of the Central Command (CENTCOM), “derided Petraeus as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting.
Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be ‘an ass-kissing little chickenshit’ and added, ‘I hate people like that’, the sources say.”
Mechanically, the general read through testimony freshly vetted and re-written by Vice President Cheney, a man well aware that despite the utter absence of any supportive evidence and owing much to his own untiring falsehoods on the matter, 33 percent of all Americans, including 40 percent of Republicans and 27 percent of Democrats, believe Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the 9/11 al-Qaeda attacks.
Media not telling there could be reasons other than terrorism behind the Sept. 11 attacks
Hence Petraeus’ testimony had a reference in almost every paragraph to al-Qaeda terror groups in Iraq, even though prudent estimates put total al-Qaeda membership in Iraq at 1,500 at most, thus furnishing some 5 per cent of the Sunni resistance.
Nor of course did the General omit frequent references to the mailgn role of iran.
The General spoke glowingly of his Surge.
He marched the senators through graphs and flow charts, whose soaring curves and bars spelled out Order and Progress, just like the Brazilian national flag.
In fact it’s hard to demonstrate there’s ever really been a surge, (as the Pentagon military analyst cloaked under the pseudonym Herman Mindshaftgap concisely demonstrates on this website today).
Right now the US is at a highpoint, with 162,000 troops in Iraq.
But that’s not far above the 160,000 deployment level at the end of 2005.
Moreover, there’s a steady decline in the Coalition of the Willing, which now stands at 11,500, falling at an average of 575 a month.
Total Coalition troops in Iraq total 173,500, well below the peak of 183,000 at the end of 2005.

General Petraeus loosed off his volleys of bogus numbers and the senatorial candidates for presidential nomination returned fire in carefully prepared but equally meretricious salvoes.
There were five such candidates on display – Clinton, Obama, Biden, Dodd,(all Democrats) and the Republican McCain.
This doesn’t count General Petraeus himself who, according to Patrick Cockburn’s story on Thursday’s CounterPunch site, disclosed his own presidential ambitions to an Iraqi official two years ago, though he apparently confided to the Iraqi that a 2008 run would be premature.
He probably hopes he’ll be running against President Clinton in 2012.
Candidate Clinton whacked presumptive candidate Petraeus with Coleridge’s definition of “dramatic truth”.
To believe his report, she said, would require “the willing suspension of disbelief”, a line which duly made its way onto the front pages and news headlines, as did Candidate Obama’s theatrical question, “At what point do we say, Enough.”
Mrs Clinton’s problem is that she very willingly suspended disbelief in 2002.
When it came time to deliver her Senate speech in support of the war, she reiterated some of the most outlandish claims made by Dick Cheney.
In this speech she said Saddam Hussein had rebuilt his chemical and biological weapons program; that he had improved his long-range missile capability; that he was reconstituting his nuclear weapons program; and that he was giving aid and comfort to Al Qaeda.
The only other Democratic senator to make all four of these claims in his floor speech was Joe Lieberman.
But even he didn’t go as far as Senator Clinton.
In Lieberman’s speech, there was conditionality about some of the claims.
In Senator Clinton’s, there was none, though even the grotesque war hawk, Ken Pollack, advising Senator Clinton prior to her vote, had told her that the allegation about the Al Qaeda connection was “bullshit.”
Later, as the winds of opinion changed, Senator Clinton claimed — and continues to do so to this day — that hers was a vote not for war but for negotiation.
In fact, the record shows that only hours after the war authorization vote Senator Clinton voted against the Democratic resolution that would have required Bush to seek a diplomatic solution before launching the war.

About two dozen ships from five nations, led by the United States, began their most ambitious exercises in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, as Indian communists opposed to strategic ties with Washington launched protests.

The naval drill, called the Malabar Exercise, is the seventh involving aircraft carriers, submarines and fighter jets of India and the U.S., whose friendship has blossomed this decade after they were on opposite sides of the Cold War.

Hillary's Bizarre History of the Iraq War
Blame the Puppet
By SAUL LANDAU
H illary Clinton blamed the Iraqi government for failure to make progress.
"The American military has succeeded," she declared to a stunned public.
"They got rid of Saddam Hussein, they gave the Iraqis a chance for free and fair elections.
"It is the Iraqi government which has failed to make the tough decisions that are important for their own people," she said, unable to finish her sentence because of a chorus of boos.
("Take Back America" conference, June 13, Washington, DC)
The other leading candidates (Obama and Edwards) blamed Bush and stood strongly for rapid withdrawal of US troops.
Hillary's casting blame on the Iraqi government showed that she accepted Bush's extreme twist on reality: that Iraq's government possesses sovereignty ("supreme and unrestricted power").
In June, Defense Secretary Robert Gates visited Baghdad and scolded Iraq's government for not making more progress.
Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had done the same as did Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
They castigate the people they fashioned as US puppets.
Imagine, a puppet master blaming its creation for disobedience, but refusing to cut the strings!
After Bush installed Iraq's "Interim Government" in 2004, he arranged for elections.
That begat media and political praise: "Bush has brought democracy to Iraq."
But laws of war dictate US, not Iraqi accountability. (Paragraph 366, U.S. Army Field Manual 27-10 (1956): Local Governments Under Duress and Puppet Governments)
"The restrictions placed upon the authority of a belligerent government cannot be avoided by a system of using a puppet government, central or local, to carry out acts which would be unlawful if performed directly by the occupant.
Acts induced or compelled by the occupant are nonetheless its acts."
Responsibility for Iraqi police and army members operating as death squads belongs to Washington, not Baghdad — and Hillary knows it.
Hillary defends her vote with language that reminds of her husband's linguistic twirls
The Bushies throw blame at their puppet and anyone else they can think of.
But their lies now haunt them — phony evidence of weapons of mass destruction and links between Saddam and al-Qaeda, which somehow presumed a threat to US security.
Bush lied about "improvement" in Iraq, from "Mission Accomplished" in May 2003 to "we're making progress in securing parts of Baghdad" in 2007.
Most Members of Congress voted for Bush's authority to make war even though they had the opportunity to inspect the very flimsy evidence behind Bush's bellicosity.
Indeed, Hillary still defends her vote with language that reminds one of her husband's linguistic twirls trying to explain how he "didn't have sex with that woman."
Instead, she blames the puppet for the US failure to resolve the Iraqi bloodshed
Hillary's tortured logic has her supporting the troops, anxious to bring them home — but not all of them — and having all Democrats united against Bush.
But Hillary has not said: "the war was illegal, immoral and cannot be excused. I was wrong I am ashamed and I want to repent."
Instead, she blames the puppet for the US failure to resolve the Iraqi bloodshed.
Bush's government in Iraq has less autonomy than the old Soviet bloc states or the Banana Republics of Central America.
The US military commands, trains and arms Iraq's repressive forces and decides what missions they can undertake.
Some sovereign!
For Hillary to accuse this hapless creation should raise concerns not only about her morality, but her intelligence.
We always assumed she was bright, but did she think she could pawn off this shabby pretext on her own voters?
Or, possibly, Hillary believed the 'ever truthful' Condoleezza Rice
Or, possibly, Hillary believed the ever truthful Condoleezza Rice (then National Security Adviser) who assured the world that the Iraqi leaders chosen by the Bush Administration "are not America's puppets.
This is a terrific list and really good government, and we're very pleased with the names that emerged." (White House Press Briefing June 24, 2004)
Her aides might have slipped her a copy of the report of The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq, (covering the period from the 1 January to 31 March 2007), which stated that "34,452 civilians were killed and more than 36,000 wounded in 2006."
Some non-official monitoring groups considered this estimate on the very low side.
Ivana Vuco, a U.N. human rights officer, said government officials had made it clear during discussions that they believed releasing high casualty numbers would make it harder for the government to quell unrest." (LA Times April 26, 2007, Tina Susman)
Lancet, the British medical journal, counts as many as 655,000+ total deaths (civilian and non-civilian) due to the war.
(2006 Lancet survey of mortality, based on surveys and sampling methods up to July 2006. The figure includes death from increased lawlessness, degraded infrastructure, poorer healthcare.)

54% of Iraqis live on less than a US dollar a day.
The unemployment rate is near 70%
The UN report said some 3,000 people have been arrested in security sweeps since the Baghdad security plan began in mid-February.
It criticized Iraq for failing to guarantee due process rights to the arrested.
37,000 people remain detained in Iraqi and US prisons, many without charge or trial.
Some 200 academics were killed since 2003; 12,000 doctors have fled the country.
54% of Iraqis live on less than a US dollar a day and the unemployment rate is near 70%.
Iraq's courts deliberate for a few minutes at trials involving life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Iraq suffers from a "rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis," the report concluded.
Who broke Iraq, Saddam Hussein or the US military?
Who broke Iraq?
Saddam Hussein or the US military praised by Hillary for toppling Saddam?
The US military certainly has attained an impressive kill ratio.
Aside from estimates of civilian casualties since March 2003, over 4 million have fled the country.
Hillary's verbal ass kissing of the military doesn't correspond to its actions as dictated by Rumsfeld, Gates and the White House.
After four years of war and occupation, the "Coalition forces" — read US forces — has not established peace, law, order, employment, basic services or any form of security.
The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq summarized:
"The challenge facing the Government of Iraq is not limited to addressing the level of violence in the country, but the longer term maintenance of stability and security in an environment characterized by impunity and a breakdown in law and order.
In this context, the intimidation of a large segment of the Iraqi population, among them professional groups and law enforcement personnel, and political interference in the affairs of the judiciary, were rife and in need of urgent attention." (BBC April 25, 2007)

Baghdad
During Vietnam War similar statements flowed from politicians' mouths, placing blame on US puppet government
The horror of the numbers becomes enhanced by the horror of non-learning.
During the Vietnam War in the 1960s and early 1970s similar statements flowed from politicians' mouths, placing blame on US puppet governments of South Vietnam for not making enough progress.
When US forces finally withdrew in 1973, the South Vietnamese army outnumbered their northern adversary 3 to 2 and possessed immensely better equipment.
The façade quickly fell apart as soon as battle erupted.
The puppet army disintegrated.
In Iraq, the US military destroyed Iraq's government and its national integrity.
The US fabricated a government and now places responsibility on that miserable entity for failing to solve problems created by the United States.
The United States lost in Vietnam because it could not defeat a people fighting on their own soil, nor could the US sustain indefinitely ongoing casualties.
When this concocted government failed in its elementary duties — as the Iraq government fails — whiners blamed its lack of will and institutionalized corruption.
They then turned on the US media and accused it of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

It took 500,000 US soldiers to stop the Viet Minh and Viet Cong from capturing the entire country.
Indeed, after Tet, the United States suffered some 25,000 casualties.
In Vietnam, as in Iraq, the United States invaded another country and established its puppet, one incapable of capturing the allegiance of the majority.
Why?
Imperial control or exporting democracy?
Eisenhower noted in his Memoirs.
"I have never talked or corresponded with a person knowledgeable in Indo-Chinese affairs who did not agree that had elections been held as of the time of the fighting, possibly 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the communist Ho Chi Minh as their leader."
In Iraq, US forces are far worse off than they were after they invaded Iraq.
Yet Bush foresees US presence in Iraq for decades.
Hillary agrees
Hillary agrees — leave some troops in bases already built across Iraq.
She doesn't apparently understand that their presence will incite jihadists everywhere.
Hillary must had seen a declassified April 2006 National Intelligence Estimate called "Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States."
It stated: "The Iraq conflict has become the 'cause celebre' for jihadists, breeding a deep resentment of US involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement."
"Go Hillary," chants bin Laden.
The wily old fiend knows that the US elite want to control Iraq's oil wealth and thus the military bases.
He might indirectly help fund Hillary's campaign.

Sen. Clinton and Corporate America
Hillary, Inc.
By RALPH NADER
J ust as the Democrats could never seem to get a handle on Ronald Reagan in his sixteen years as Governor of California and President, the Republicans cannot get a handle on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
No matter what they tried-and they were admittedly timid-the Democrats could neither upset, mire, or throw Ronald Reagan on the defensive.
He smiled, shrugged his shoulders and tefloned his way to victory after victory.
The Republicans are flummoxed when it comes to Senator Clinton.
They could not even mount a hardy campaign against her in 2006, leaving a nominal Yonkers mayor the hapless task to take up the space on the ballot opposite her.
She walked to victory, spending over $35 million in the process.
The reasons why Republicans cannot score points against Clinton is that she is so much like them on the key corporate power issues.
Although she is on the Armed Services Committee, she took President Eisenhower's description of the "military-industrial complex" and repeatedly rubber stamped the massive, bloated, wasteful and corrupt expenditures.
Let a thousand weapon systems bloom, was and is her mantra
It was not for her to question any redundant weapons systems, no longer strategically needed in the post-Soviet Union era.
It was not for her to act on the scores of investigative findings by the Government Accountability Office of the Congress documenting corporate waste, fraud and abuse and do something about them.
Let a thousand weapon systems bloom was and is her mantra.
Opted instead for political cash for her campaigns
The corporate crime wave of the past seven years, draining and looting trillions of dollars from workers, investors and pension-holders did not catch her industrious attention either.
Notwithstanding the publicized enforcement efforts of her state's attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, whose popularity took him to a landslide win for the Governorship, she refused to extend his efforts in the U.S. Senate by pushing the regulatory agencies for a necessary crackdown on corporate crime.
He gave her the ultimate political cover, by showing the great public support for his "law and order" drives, but she lacked the political fortitude and opted instead for the political cash for her campaigns.
Further contributing to the gigantic government deficit in Washington are the dozens of programs providing subsidies, handouts and bailouts to large corporations known as "corporate welfare."
One would think that all that experience in her husband's White House, which she touts routinely, would have predisposed her to championing cutting corporate welfare that now amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars a year in an upward distribution of wealth from the have-littles to the have-lots.
No way.
Hillary lets the tax revenues and the tax loopholes grow and the windfalls swell the coffers of big business.
Done nothing, especially in inner city where outrageous interest charges on pay-day loans, predatory lending, redlining, landlord abuses and code violations, lead and asbestos abound
By this time the Republicans cannot describe her in the least as "anti-business."
Why the junior Senator from New York has done virtually nothing about the business crimes against the poor in her state, especially in the inner city where outrageous interest charges on pay-day loans, predatory lending, redlining, landlord abuses and code violations, lead and asbestos abound.
Many of these financial scams benefit Wall Street financiers.
What's left for the Republicans to work on?
The Iraq war?
Senator Clinton voted for the war resolution and refuses to admit her mistake in so doing.
She remains generally a Democratic Hawk on foreign policy.
What about global corporate trade?
She is a fervent backer of the World Trade Organization and NAFTA, though she now wants to tweak them with some unenforceable labor and environmental qualifications.
The evidence behind the treaties' supplanting our nation's legitimate sovereignty and procedural safeguards through these transnational forms of autocratic, secretive governance, is overwhelming.
The evidence that these trade treaties have cost good industrial jobs, driven down efforts to keep living wages, and contributed to the country's huge trade deficits is also decisive.
Yet Senator Clinton follows the Republicans and neuters what could be the latter's criticism of any potential demand for renegotiating these vise-like trade shackles that have led to shipping whole industries to the communist dictatorship in China.
Moreover, she has co-sponsored bills with Republicans and received their public praise, including that of former House Speaker, Newt Gingrich.
The new publication, Politico, headlined recently an article by Jim Vandehei and Carrie Sheffield with the words-"Clinton Presidency May be Inevitable, Republicans say."
Former House Majority leader, Tom DeLay, is quoted as saying: "If the conservative movement and Republicans don't understand how massive the Clinton coalition is, she will be the next president."
He should know about massive coalitions.
The article also quotes other Republican Party bigwigs in the same vein.
None of them offered any strategy.
Instead they speak generalities that simply prove the point that Senator Clinton has them neutralized and nullified by the very brazen scope of her political expediency and opportunism.
About all these Republican operatives could offer is that a Hillary presidency would prod and shock conservative foot soldiers into action.
Such an attitude means capitulation for 2008.

The second, and equally obvious, problem is: John Kerry, John Edwards, Hillary Rodham Clinton and the other corporate toadies who run the Democratic Party.
I know there are some in the antiwar movement who believe the Democratic Party can be a vehicle to challenge the U.S. empire.
But that wasn’t true in the last half of the 20th century, when Cold-War liberals promoted imperial policies, and it isn’t true in the 21st century, when War-on-Terrorism liberals are doing their part to prop up the empire.

Hillary Clinton is not that person.
Soon after Camp Casey, in August 2005, I was meeting with some Hollywood people who pretended that they supported me, but really were big money donors and supporters of Hillary.   I was told that the senator was really against the war, but she was waiting for the politically correct time to come out against it.   I was told that she was the best hope for the Democrats in 2008, and I should give her a break.
I don't know who Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood and Mr. Hollywood Got Rocks thought that they were talking to.   My son was used as a "soldier of Christ" in BushCo's crusade against the world and a political pawn in this pro-war Democrat's moves toward the White House.
I was disgusted and noted this in many blogs that I wrote at the time.
Supported Jonathan Tasini
I supported the New York candidate for Senate who ran a very courageous, anti-war race against Clinton: Jonathan Tasini.
CodePink New York did amazing work dogging the senator and her supporters everywhere she went, and outing the fact that she is a Republican in Democratic clothing.
Unfortunately, the people of New York spoke — and Clinton, the pro-war candidate, beat out Jonathan.
The conservative area she and President Clinton moved their carpet bags to after their presidency was over had a major impact on the last elections.
I, my sister Dede, and another Gold Star Mother, Lynn Braddach, whose son, Travis Nall, was killed in Iraq in 2003, met with Senator Clinton in DC in September of 2005.   We poured our hearts and souls out to her.
Sat there stone-faced and walked out
We cried as we told her of our sons and our fear for the people of Iraq and the escalating body count of our brave young people.
She sat there stone-faced and walked out and told Sarah Ferguson of the Village Voice, "My bottom line is that I don't want their sons to die in vain.... I don't believe it's smart to set a date for withdrawal.... I don't think it's the right time to withdraw."   She may as well have slapped us in the face using Bloody George's line and using our son's sacrifice to justify her war-mongering.
On Thursday, January 18th, Senator Clinton introduced a meaningless bill to put a cap on the number of soldiers that can be in Iraq, set at January 1st levels.   It is as weak and meaningless as a nonbinding resolution — and a politically safe move, since almost three fourths of the country oppose the war and oppose Bloody George.
By the time she introduced her Senate bill last Thursday, over 1000 of our young people had come home in body bags and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis had died, while she was waiting for the best political time to be semi-against the war.
How many of our troops are lying in Walter Reed with devastating injuries that could have been prevented if a Senate leader like Clinton had taken a moral stance instead of political one?
This occupation of Iraq can't be won by being smarter — it was lost before we went in.   The US, again, was a big loser in a capricious military expedition, with the support of Senator Clinton.
She is an amazingly brilliant person, and she cannot say that she was fooled by George.
We, the American public, can be brilliant too, and we can't buy that baloney.
In 2005, I was dying to support Hillary for president: finally, a bright woman with experience.   However, she is a champion fence-sitter and politically heartless.
I again affirm my commitment to peace.   I don't care if it is a man or a woman; Democrat or Republican; white or black; Christian, Jew or otherwise.   I will only support a candidate who is courageously and uncompromisingly committed to peace.
Hillary Clinton is not that person.   She never will be.   History speaks louder than words.

Kewe comment:
These are the people — including Bush and the Republicans — but especially these people, because they fawn and abase themselves in obsequious behaviour for the support of the pro-Zionist Israeli lobby within their constituency, taking the substantial reward of monies for the use of their political careers.
It is US Taxpayer money that props up the present Zionist Israli government, US taxpayer money used to supply the Zionist Israeli military with its supposed needs.
It is these people, these politicians of disgust — and if there is a hell there has to be a special place reserved for such — that have not only allowed but furthered and nurtured over these many years the attitude from the people of Israel, most not born to the land, that they have a legitimate right to exclude the people of Palestine from the farms and olive reserves who's fathers and mothers and grandfathers and grandmothers going back generation upon generation have maintained.
The US taxpayer has and is supplying the money for US made bulldozers to tear down the olive trees.
US taxpayer money has and is supplying the highest technical armaments that are perpetuating this human misery.  US taxpayer money is allowing one grouping of people to overlord in a most vicious way another grouping, a grouping who do have right to the land that they are now excluded from.

There are those who contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is all about Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.   This is absolute nonsense.
In truth, the history of the conflict is not over occupation, and never has been:  it is over the fundamental right of Israel to exist.
The greatest threat to Israel's right to exist, with the prospect of devastating violence, now comes from Iran.
For too long, leaders of both political parties in the United States have not done nearly enough to confront the Russians and the Chinese, who have supplied Iran as it has plowed ahead with its nuclear and missile technology....
In the words of Isaiah, we will make ourselves to Israel 'as hiding places from the winds and shelters from the tempests; as rivers of water in dry places; as shadows of a great rock in a weary land.'
The United States will stand with Israel now and forever.
Now and forever.
If you find the images in this article revolting, like me, think of the following: people everywhere in Palestine see such images on a daily basis not as pictures but live and anywhere they go, and that this genocide is supported equally by ALL western countries, the EU and the UN.
If you live in any "western" country, your taxes are very probably financing what you see here.
Speak with your politicians if you do not like what you see.

Since the criminal State of Israel denied me the right to work as a journalist in my homeland Palestine and forced me to flee to Europe, I often ask myself why the U.S.A does not stop donating to Israel the bombs which they use against the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
What, ever, have we done to the USA?
Why did the U.S.A send military detachments to Israel after the Israeli lost the war in the south of Lebanon?
The Israeli military radio, 'Tsahal Radio' announced these news.
They said that the American detachment of officers had arrived in Israel to take part in the 'Autumn Clouds' operation in Gaza.
That they helped the Israeli military to perform their 'killing duties' without any loss.
American officers were involved in the last Beit Hanoun massacre, in which in one incident 20 Palestinians were killed, at least 60 innocent children, old men and women were injured.

The question poses itself, why is the political discourse of the European countries still fixated on the crimes against the Jews over 60 years ago?
All the while allowing and even supporting the perpetration of the big disaster which befalls my homeland Palestine?
Why do all European politicians keep silence about all the crimes which the Israeli perpetrates in Palestine?
Are they scared that the Jews will return to Europe, or are they themselves involved in these crimes?
Is it logical that the European countries signed the convention against Genocide, and then they impose a siege against the Palestinian.
Create conditions for real starvation for another nation in another land?
Why does the international media impose a veil of silence over what is happening in Palestine?
The concentration camps which are Gaza and the West Bank?
Never anything comes out in the media, the TV, the newspapers.
The media only relates minor incidents, or, in a hugely inflated manner, when something small happens against the Israeli occupation terrorists.
As far as I am concerned, all the western media is complicit in this genocide.

The Beit Hanoun massacre, a day of bloody clouds.
On November 1, 2006, the number of the Palestinians who were killed in Gaza during the 'Autumn Clouds' Israeli military terror operation reached 86, and at least 265 were injured.
This happened before the criminals of the Israeli State perpetrated the now generally known massacre in Beit Hanoun.
The morning of November 8, 2006, Israeli tanks shelled Palestinians in their homes in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun.
They fired eleven shells into six homes, killing at least 20 Palestinians, wounding some 60 more.
The Irony is that this attack comes a day after Israeli troops pulled out of the town after a week-long offensive in which dozens of Palestinian died, and hundreds were injured.
A person from Gaza, who also sent me most of the pictures of this article, posted this on that day:
It has been the 7th day of the israeli aggression against citizens in gaza strip town of Bieth Hanoon, till this moment they have killed more than 90 citizen withen those 7 days.
What is most important about this, is the kind of strange weapons used in the attack.
These bombs explode in a strange way to make fatal damage of human body.
Cuts and burns more than any bomb we have ever experienced ... so this is why the number of kills is very high till now.
And for the most important even the wonded, thay almost have no hope to cure, as the damage that happens to their bodys .. the Palestinian Health ministray believes that some nuclear radiations might be contented in these weapons, as they can not really understand what is going on till now.
As i said more than 90 were killed and more than 500 wonded, tens in danger ... and more than 100 handdicapped as the type of weapons they use ..
The israelis destroyed many houses, and they killed many trees in simple words a New Jenin Camp.
If you remember what happened in Jenen, they destroyed roads, electricity and water nets.. in simple words what happened was an earth quack.
During searching some houses they stole what they found, some cellphones and PCs and gold.
What is happpening now that they Israelis partially withdrawn from Beith Hanoon, but not completely as some media say.
For that more than 9 were killed yesterday morning by Israeli snipers, or air raids and the army still ocuupying and having terrorist militant activities against civils.
Tonight some thing that happened which might be good to consider here, is an Israeli airstrike against the house of Jamila AL-Shanty, the member of the Palestinian Legaslative Council.
This caused the death of her sister and her sister's husband and an other passerby.
About the school bus that happened the day before, they shot the female teacher inside the bus in front of little kids about 4 and 5 years old.
Imagine how would they grow up?
Today there has been aggression using arsenal.
The Israeli arsenal killed more than 20 civilians as they bombed houses over the heads of the inhabitants.
So many kids and women were killed or injured this morning..."

Each time I read about the criminal Israeli operation in Gaza, seeing the increase in the number of the civilian victims, I swallowed my pain and closed the computer.
Until that evening, a day after the Beit Hanoun massacre, when I saw a group of Jews lead a demonstration against an Austrian rightist group which has its office near my house.
Suddenly the questions started coming:
How can it be that such a criminal nation has the gut to complain about the deplorable things which befell them in the past?
While they are perpetrating massacres and crimes on a daily basis.
Often worse than the most extreme crimes attributed to the Nazis.
Against the civilians of another nation.

The Israeli practices in Gaza and the West Bank is indescribable.
The daily crimes of Israel in Palestine are uncountable.
Their hateful and shameless incitements against the Arab world increase day after day....
In Beit Hanoun, some of the shells landed on a home, killing 11 members of one family called Al-'Athamneh, including a 9-year-old child and a 73-year-old woman.
The other shells landed on other five homes at Hamad Street in Beit Hanoun.
Other victims were from the Al-Kafarneh family.
Muhammad Athamneh described the massacre to Palestinian newspaper Hayat Al-Jadidah.
He said that the killed were children, women, and old men, that they had killed his mother, sister, uncle and his six sons, and four sons of his second uncle.

Athamneh said that it was 5:30 at the morning, everybody were sleeping, when they heared the very strong blast of the first explosion which landed at his cousins house, followed by screaming and crying.
He ran out, found his relatives, old and young men running in the streets, escaping from the shelling and looking for protection in other places, but that this did not help them to escape from the Israeli shelling.
The "Autumn Clouds" rained missiles on their heads.
They all were killed on the roads.
The whole place was converted into a collective grave.
Athamneh was shocked, he did not know how to save the life of his family and relatives, everybody was bleeding and the floor was covered by a big pool of blood!
He saw the horrible death in front of his eyes.
His cousin’s wife died with her two children while he was screaming and seeking the Ambulance.
Nobody was able to come near under the heavy, blind shelling killing everybody moving in the area.
The sky rained blood that day.
He was probably running away,
so they shot him thru the head

Today Saturday, the US, who said in advance that Israel has the right to defend itself and gave the Palestinian resistance the responsibility for the massacre, vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning an Israeli attack in the Gaza Strip that killed 20 Palestinian civilians and injured more 60.
The disgusting American Psychopath Bolton described the text as 'unbalanced' and 'biased against Israel and politically motivated'.
Does anyone wonder why the Palestinian resistance is shooting missiles toward Israel, which by the way never really reach anything?
The reason is simple: the big concentration camp which is Gaza, where a million and a half people are caged, impoverished and hungry, and where almost all civilian infrastructure has been left in ruins caused by Israel.
The increased poverty and real hunger which the Palestinians suffer in their reclusion:
The shortage of food for the children,
The damaged infrastructure which the occupation left behind,
The closed entrances of the city,
The daily killings and destruction — including the bombing of the power station — in Gaza,
These reasons are enough for anyone to fight against the Genocide and look for a better life to live.
Does anyone wonder how much the face of the Israeli occupation is bloody, ugly and inhuman?
Does anybody wonder how much the American leaders are criminals in their support to Israel?
When will the world give Israel a firm ultimatum to stop the occupation, the genocide which has been going on for about 60 years now?

Seeking International Military Forces in Palestine
Why did the European politicians not adopt the request of the Palestinians, who asked for European military forces to be sent to Palestine to protect them and the infrastructure from the Israeli crimes?
We are really seeking International military forces to stop the bloody crimes against Palestine, to make a halfways normal life possible.
The Palestinians Authority does not really exist any more.
Abbas and the people around him don’t have even the power to protect their underpants.
The Palestinian civilians lost their trust to the P.A. long time ago, when it became evident that they are a bunch of corrupt, sold-out traitors.
The Palestinian civilians are seeking protection against the Jewish criminals, and they will be thankful for anybody who will stop the crimes commited against them.
Please, send military forces to stop the Israeli rampage in Gaza and the West Bank.
Part of the images here come from the Al-Ittihad newspaper, part of them were submitted by somebody from Beit Hanoun who lost seven friends and relatives during this last Israeli rampage.
His only comment was "that's life", because he knows, as all those who live in Gaza, that his life is worth nothing.

Israel hails US military aid rise
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has confirmed that the United States is planning a significant increase in military and government aid to Israel.
US Democrats and Republicans Have Enough Votes To End The Palestine Israel conflict
[If They Choose To Do So]
US Democrats and Republicans simply have to block passage of any bill that would continue to fund the Israel government.
This requires not 67 or 60 US Senate votes, or even 51, but just 41 — the number of US senators needed to maintain a filibuster and prevent a bill from coming up for a vote.
In other words, the US Democrats and Republicans have more than enough votes to end the Palestine conflict — if they choose to do so.
The US Democratic and Republican leadership may believe — rightly or wrongly — that such a strategy would entail unacceptable political costs, especially with the high level funding from AIPAC and other Israel backed monetary support.
But that's very different from being unable to affect policy.
To insist that the US Congress cannot stop the Palestine conflict obscures the actual choices facing the US people — by confusing "can't" with "won't.

There was, of course, no admission that any change had taken place.
Merely it became known, with extreme suddenness and everywhere at once, that Eastasia and not Eurasia was the enemy.

The law of unintended consequences:
Zbigniew Brzezinski, National Security Advisor under Carter, acknowleded in a 1998 interview with Le Nouvel Observateur that the Carter administration began funding the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan six months before the Soviets invaded (a statement corroborated by former CIA director Robert Gates).
Brzezinski:  "According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979.
"But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise:  Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul.
"And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention."
Question:  When the Soviets justified their intervention by asserting that they intended to fight against a secret involvement of the United States in Afghanistan, people didn't believe them.  However, there was a basis of truth.  You don't regret anything today?
Brzezinski:  "Regret what?  That secret operation was an excellent idea.
"It had the effect of drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it?
"The day that the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter:  We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war."
At this point in history, one need hardly elaborate on the short-sightedness of a policy which sought to give the Soviets their own Vietnam at the small cost of a few "stirred up Muslims".
But for the rare, obtuse reader, let's state it flat out: there's a direct line leading from this ill-conceived decision to the events of September 11, 2001.

All 89 people were arrested by US Marshals around 1:30pm today.
Protesters and activists had entered the building throughout the morning to submit their petitions and stayed to read the names of all Guantanamo prisoners and accounts of their torture and illegal imprisonment.
Also while inside, they managed to drop banners reading 'Shut Down Guantánamo' from balconies in the court atrium.

It was very quiet.
I was grateful there were no flags.
George Bush and Dick Cheney were no where to be found.
They had other priorities.
I did too...

The World is Waiting for an Answer: Are we Americans, or Human Beings?
The first, and most obvious, problem is: George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and the Republican Party.
We have to commit ourselves not just to getting these the ideologically fanatical reactionaries out of office but also to challenging them for control of the public conversation — the heart of democracy — which they have so effectively narrowed and degraded.
We have to confront the deeply embedded racism in the United States that makes it so easy to mobilize public support for war, as long as the targets are not white.
We have to confront the barbarism of the United States, which not only has the capacity to destroy an entire society but a proven willingness to do just that to achieve policy goals

Justice O'Connor's decision in Bush v. Gore led to the current Bush administration's execution of war crimes and atrocities in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places in the Middle East that are as egregious as those committed by the Third Reich and other evil governments in human history.
The lesson is clear.
Those people who may be honorable and distinguished in their chosen profession should always make decisions based upon good rather than evil no matter where their nominal allegiances may rest.
Justice O'Connor was quoted to have said something to the affect that she abhorred the thought of Bush losing the 2000 election to Gore.
She was known to have wanted to retire after the 2000 election for same reason she is now retiring.
She wanted to spend more time with her sick husband.
Unfortunately, she tarnished her distinguished career with the deciding vote in Bush v. Gore by going along with the partisan majority of the Court to interfere with a democratic election that she and the majority feared would be lost in an honest recount.
She dishonored herself and the Supreme Court by succumbing to party allegiances and not The Constitution to which she swore to uphold.
And the constitutional argument she and the majority used to justify their decision was the Equal Protection Clause.
The Equal Protection Clause was the ultimate basis for the decision, but the majority essentially admitted (what was obvious in any event) that it was not basing its conclusion on any general view of what equal protection requires.
The decision in Bush v Gore was not dictated by the law in any sense—either the law found through research, or the law as reflected in the kind of intuitive sense that comes from immersion in the legal culture.
The Equal Protection clause is generally used in matters concerning civil rights.
The majority ignored their basic conservative views supporting federalism and states' rights in order to justify their decision.
History will haunt these justices down for their utter lack of justice and the hypocrisy associated with this decision.

The World is Waiting for an Answer: Are we Americans, or Human Beings?
But perhaps most importantly, we have to confront the incredible affluence and the sense of entitlement that is so common in this country.
That is not a problem exclusive to reactionary Republicans or cowardly Democrats.
It’s a problem in every corner of this country, including in progressive politics.
The United States has 5 percent of the world’s population yet we consume about 25 percent of the world’s oil and 30 percent of the gross world product.
We all enjoy, to varying degrees, the cheap toys of empire.
The people at the top benefit most, but we are all living in relative luxury compared with most of the rest of the world.
Half the world’s population — more than 3 billion of our brothers and sisters — live on less than $2 a day.
Half the world’s people live on what you and I might pay for a cup of fancy coffee.
We need to keep central in our minds and in our hearts the fact of our affluence and their poverty, and understand the connection.
That affluence matters politically, because it is easy for people who live comfortably to be morally lazy and politically passive.
U.S. military and economic power around the world helps create and perpetuate these conditions of inequality.

To challenge that power is to challenge our own affluence.
It’s easy even for those who engage in dissident politics to forget that changing the politics of this country also means changing our own lives.
The two projects must go forward together.
Let me put it as clearly as I can: The way we live in this country — the way every one of us here at this rally today lives — is morally indefensible and ecologically unsustainable.
It is a way of life that can’t be enjoyed by the rest of the world, and it is a way of life that if unchecked literally will destroy the world.

How Walter Jones Grew a Conscience
By Jan Frel Posted June 22, 2005
Walter Jones Conscience
Rep. Walter Jones with Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
In the heady atmosphere of war lust and post-9/11 New Patriotism that subsumed Washington in March 2003, GOP House Representative of North Carolina Walter B. Jones made a stand.
Jones told the press that he hoped his effort to rename French fries, "Freedom Fries," in the House cafeterias would prompt visitors "to think of the thousands of military members overseas who are there for you, for me, and for the freedom of millions of people they never know personally."
It was the high-water mark in the Campaign to Hate France, a key splinter project of the Let's Get Iraq effort.
Two years later, Rep. Jones told North Carolina's big daily, the Raleigh News & Observer, that he wished the Freedom Fries incident "had never happened" and that Congress "must be told the truth" about the Iraq war.
Cuba
Soon after, Jones stood with two of the most liberal Democratic representatives in Congress — Dennis Kucinich and Neil Abercrombie — and the Republican isolationist and libertarian Ron Paul to introduce legislation calling for the president to announce a withdrawal timetable by the end of this year.
In other words, Walter Jones made one of the staggering about-faces seen in Washington since George W. Bush took office.
What happened?
Mainstream newspapers and cable television's take on Jones' declaration so far has not gone much deeper than a kind of mild bewilderment.
The surface-level political analysis on Jones that has made the progressive rounds goes something like this: shrewd, canny Republican realizes that calling for Iraq pullout is means of political survival in upcoming tumultuous 2006 elections, gets headstart against primary challengers.
That analysis applies to the new posture Republican Senator Chuck Hagel struck, when he said a few days ago that the United States was "losing" in Iraq.  Hagel intends to run for president and wants to distinguish himself from the pack.
But if re-election was the motivating principle behind Walter Jones' change of heart, you'd expect to find that his district — North Carolina's 3rd — was a swing district that narrowly went for Bush in November; that it was at the vanguard of dropping public opinion on Iraq; and that the county chairs, party activists and local residents had all been pressuring him to make a stand and call for withdrawal of the troops.
Rome
Nothing of the sort.
Jones' district is one of the most militarized in the country, if not the most.
Sixty thousand veterans live in the 17 counties that make up his constituency, which on average voted at a mid-60s percentage level for Bush last November.
There are three Marine bases that house thousands of active servicemen and their families; about 43,000 military and 5,000 civilians at Camp Lejeune in Onslow County; Cherry Point, the world's largest Marine Corp air station and Craven County's largest employer, which pumps $500 million annually into the economy; and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base which employs around 4,000 military and 500 civilians in Wayne County.
You can't be pro-military spending or patriotic enough for a congressional district like this.
So no surprise then, that Walter Jones has a spot on the House Armed Services Committee or that he waded neck-deep in the propaganda effort to go to war in Iraq.
Beside his Freedom Fries stunt, Jones has brilliantly shepherded his three garrisons out of Rumsfeld's massive base closure plans, presented to Congress this year.
Until recently, Jones was well-liked and respected by local Republican officials.  The Republican county chairs I spoke with in his district told me they were caught flat-footed by his transformation.
Steve Tyson, chair of Craven County (home of Cherry Point), told me he thought "it was more surprise than anything else for residents," whose reaction was this made him look "weak" on the military.
US controlled
Naval Base Guantánamo
Bob Pruett, chair of neighboring Carteret County, and a 25-year veteran of the Marine Corps, said he was overwhelmed by the number of people who called him after Jones made his remarks.
He said the general reaction wasn't that Jones called for the withdrawal of troops — "which all of us of course want as soon as possible" — but that it "sent the wrong message to the enemy" and worried veterans there might be a return to the Vietnam situation.  "Some veterans were incensed," he said.
Marty Orgonis, the Republican chair of Onslow County — which hosts Camp Lejeune — said that no one in the local party's 57-person committee wanted a vendetta with Jones, but they felt on the whole that his judgment was "misguided and premature."
One of Onslow County's commissioners last week went on local television and fumed, calling for Jones to resign.  He later withdrew the request.  Orgonis told me that if Jones continued down the track he'd taken, things "could get out of hand."
Johnny Rouse, the Democratic chair of Pitt County — which gave Kerry the closest margin over Bush in last November, 53-47 — said the local reaction of Republican officials and area residents was more about supporting the president in a time of war.
Rouse, himself a veteran, said while about half the residents of his county were against the war, the issue "goes beyond politics in a way.  Everyone here believes that the duty of a congressman is to support the president in a time of war, and that's what the troops need to hear."
This was the consensus of every political official I spoke to, and the substance of remarks from troops quoted in local media reports in the aftermath of Jones' statements.
So if it wasn't local political pressure, what made Jones change his mind about the war?

For most of us, Iraq is at worst an unpleasant reality TV show.  Even for most politicians in Washington, it's a problem they've so far been able to throw public funds at with the hope it will go away or improve, muttering out the sides of their mouths in public about the "lack of progress," and in private, despairing like the rest of us.
But it's become too much for Jones.  Iraq has subsumed Jones' political and private life on the Hill and in his district, a consequence of the ubiquitous military presence there.
Perhaps more than any other politician in Washington, Jones has witnessed exactly what the Iraq policy he helped shape has done to the lives of the people he's supposed to represent.
A congressional staffer who works closely with Walter Jones' office right now told me that Jones changed his mind about Iraq after some "difficult soul searching," and that the "growing gap" between the truth about Iraq that plays out in his district and the Republican party line he's supposed to toe in committee hearings has taken a "terrible toll on him."
When I asked Jones' press secretary what led to the shift, she told me it was a combination of "the top-secret briefings, researching the issues, and talking to families."
In every single direction, Iraq is staring at Walter Jones in the face, and it's turned him into an emotional wreck.
Jones hangs photographs of the fallen soldiers from his district at the entrance to his congressional offices, and their eyes meet his every time he enters the offices.
More than 100 Marines from Camp Lejeune have lost their lives; Jones has written letters to the 1,300 family members who survive them.
Mix in the closed-door sessions he attends with generals and intelligence experts telling him every single thing is going wrong, the despair of wives and children on the bases who have seen tours of duty extended, and the disquiet, misery and injuries of the returned combat veterans.
Jones still talks about the funeral he attended two years ago of Sgt. Michael Bitz, who never saw the birth of his twin sons.
The Raleigh News and Observer article that broke the story in May about Jones' switch on Iraq also reveals that he "is quicker to tears than to laughter" and that he's been trying to build a memorial to the dogs that have helped U.S. servicemen in war:
He flips through a book dog handlers gave him, leafing past stylized drawings of animals leading their masters through danger.  He starts to read, then catches himself.  "I better not read this now," he says.  "I never get through it without crying."
It isn't just the book about war dogs, it's anything at all.  This isn't about politics; it's personal, and utterly emotional.  Walter Jones can't lie about Iraq anymore.  He's worked in the beating heart of this rotten American war effort for almost three years, and he's complicit in all of it.  It's enough to make a congressman cry.

The World is Waiting for an Answer: Are we Americans, or Human Beings?
So, our immediate message is clear: U.S. out of Iraq now.
The U.S. occupation of Iraq cannot bring security and democracy in Iraq.
It is an impediment to security and democracy.
Our choices over the long term are just as clear.
On all these fronts, political and personal, we have to ask: What are we willing to give up?
What risks are we willing to take?
We have a choice: We can actually live the values that we say guide our country or we can abandon those values.
We can work to make democracy — that is, a system in which ordinary people have meaningful input into the formation of public policy — a reality in our own country.
If we don’t, the unrestrained and violent use of U.S. power abroad will remain a danger.
We have a choice: We can live on top of the world or we can live in the world.
The stakes are high; if we don’t find a way to force the United States to live in the world, before too long there may well be no world left for anyone.
These challenges can be condensed into a simple choice: We can be Americans, or we can be human beings.
The rest of the world is waiting for our answer.

Mike Ferner served as a corpsman at a navy hospital and aboard an aircraft carrier.  He was discharged as a conscientious objector.
He spoke to us at the Peace Rally as a member of Veterans for Peace, and challenged us as American citizens to a higher level of morality that I’ve heard from anywhere in the current administration.  I’ll say no more.  Today you want to spend time with Mike’s words.  — Pat Denino
As we gather here this afternoon, our colleagues in Toledo are debuting “Arlington at Toledo,” a cemetery with over 1700 white, wooden tombstones to commemorate each U.S. soldier killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Over the past weeks, my wife and I painted a few hundred of these in our kitchen.  Last Saturday we started putting labels on them with the name, age, rank and home state of each G.I. killed.
As we sat on our living room floor, surrounded by stacks of tombstones representing so many young men and women, we listened to an old Dire Straits album.
The track titled “Brothers in Arms” came on with these telling lines: “Every man has to die/But it’s written in the starlight/And in every line on your palm/We’re fools to make war/On our brothers in arms.”
Sue looked at the tombstone with a 19 year-old soldier’s name on it she was holding and dissolved into sobs crying, “He was someone’s baby...”
We are here today to recommit ourselves to ending this slaughter of someone else’s babies, whether American or Iraqi.  We are here to demand an end to George Bush’s criminal war.
On the second anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, a group of local activists staged a dramatic protest outside the Armed Forces Recruiting Center at 650 American Legion Highway in Roslindale.

At noon, the Boston Direct Action Project dumped five gallons of fake blood and then took up positions on the doorstep.

The activists portrayed a dead Iraqi woman, her grieving husband, a dead U.S. soldier and his grieving wife.

The action lasted 90 minutes, and there were no arrests.

The blood flowed forty feet into the parking lot, attracting scores of local residents.

The community was largely supportive, and many onlookers stopped to talk to members of the Project, who handed out informational flyers with suggested alternatives to military service.

Amputations of arms and legs, more quadriplegics
We must end Bush’s war to prevent more deaths and traumatic amputations of arms and legs, more quadriplegics who will be bedridden the rest of their lives.
We must end Bush’s war because every day it continues, it produces more injuries we will never see until they explode years later at home.
I’m talking about thousands MORE soldiers who will return from Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the injury that leaves minds riddled with flashbacks, anxiety, unpredictable outbursts of anger, depression, addictions and suicide.
If you’ve not read “Achilles in Vietnam” by Jonathan Shay, get it.  Read it.
You will learn helpful ways to listen to returning combat veterans.
If your Uncle Bob still needs a compelling reason why war is not the answer, you’ll learn it here.
If you want proof that Bush’s war is not only devastating Iraq but our own country, it’s in “Achilles in Vietnam.”
300,000 men reported engaging in 3 or more acts of violence in previous year
Here’s just one example reduced to numbers: nearly 20 years after the last combat troops left Vietnam, the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study found that over 40% of combat vets — that’s 300,000 men — reported engaging in 3 or more acts of violence in the previous year.
Imagine how that continues to reverberate through our society, and how Bush has now guaranteed it will continue beyond this generation.
Shay stresses that PTSD “...incapacitates its victims from participating in the domestic, economic, and political life of the nation.  The painful paradox is that fighting for one’s country can render one unfit to be its citizen.”
His book led me to inescapable conclusions: sending people to war profoundly changes every one of them, not usually for the better; and if we truly want to support our troops, we should never turn them into troops in the first place.
And lest we think there is some huge gulf between us and the behavior we’ve seen from GIs in Iraq, we should keep in mind what Shay calls the “comforting fantasy” that our own character would hold up under equally extreme pressure.
“Those injured by combat trauma make us painfully aware that in all likelihood one’s own character would not have stood firm.”
That’s why it’s often difficult to be a good listener to combat veterans or to deny the truth of their stories: they threaten our sense of self respect.

Tell their story to trusted friend
Hearing what we sent these soldiers to do may cause us discomfort or disbelief, but allowing them to tell their story to a trusted friend who will retell it honestly can be the best thing we can offer.
One former soldier who has told his story many times is Stan Goff, a retired Special Forces Master Sgt.  He spent two decades, starting in Vietnam, learning the most highly developed killing skills the U.S. government had to offer.  Stan is now a Veteran for Peace.  He says:
“We know that some vets cling to denial, some are broken in body and spirit, some rage, and some turn their anger in on themselves and crawl into a needle or a bottle or the chamber of a pistol.  But there’s a way out of that wilderness, and it’s the path of the witness.
“Witnessing will heal you...Who better to out the thieves and mass murderers posing as statesmen than those of us closest to their criminal hearts in their time of need.  Because we were there, we know what these people have sent our children to do; what they have sent our children to become.”
The Suits
Sgt. Goff tells our soldiers in Iraq: “...If you want a target for your rage, there they are: The Suits — the same ones who are the enemies of peace, and the enemies of your families, especially if they are Black families, or immigrant or poor families.
“They’ll skin and grin while they are getting what they want from you, and throw you away like a used condom when they are done.  Ask the vets who are having their benefits slashed now.
Bush and his cronies are parasites
“Bush and his cronies are parasites...They get the money.  You get the prosthetics, the nightmares, and the mysterious illnesses...”
Having taken care of hundreds of young soldiers used up and thrown away during Vietnam, and witnessing yet another generation led to slaughter on a lie, it gives me particular satisfaction to publicly announce that on Monday, the Veterans for Peace national office, representing 118 chapters across the country, will notify the entire Congress of the United States of our demand that George W. Bush and Richard Cheney be impeached!!
VFP is calling for Bush and Cheney’s impeachment because — and this is important to understand — they have specifically violated and continue to violate Article VI of the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. War Crimes Act passed by Congress in 1996.
We are calling for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney because they continue to commit what are clearly defined by the Nuremberg Principles — legally binding on the U.S. — as “crimes against peace...crimes against humanity...and war crimes.”
...because Bush and Cheney initiated two years ago and continue to this day what the UN Charter — legally binding on the U.S. — defines as a war of aggression...
...because the Bush administration, in clear and specific violation of the Geneva Conventions — also legally binding on the U.S. — has tortured and killed prisoners, purposely targeted and killed civilians, prevented the delivery of medical relief...all...ALL of which are also violations of Article VI of the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. War Crimes Act...to say nothing of international law and basic humanity...
But you say you live in a democracy
Veterans for Peace is calling for impeachment because it is our responsibility as citizens to do so.
The words of a village sheik I spoke with in Iraq last year haunt me every day.
Even as he assured me that he recognized the difference between the government and the people of the United States, he asked, “but you say you live in a democracy.
“How can this be happening to us?”
It is our responsibility to impeach this criminal leadership
It is our responsibility to impeach this criminal leadership.
As citizens, every one of us is complicit with its crimes.
By virtue of that complicity, we are compelled not only by the law but by human morality and by history to do whatever we can to stop this war of aggression; stop these crimes against humanity.
The Nuremberg Tribunals following WWII did not favorably judge the first nation the world determined had waged a war of aggression, nor its “good citizens” who obeyed their government.
But, my friends, we must do more than sign an impeachment petition or get a new bumper sticker.
The effort to evict this criminal gang from Washington will help end the war, but we must do more than attend demonstrations, pass out leaflets, or write letters.
I’m suggesting we look to the heroic history of Ohioans who in their day fought the legalized evil of slavery.

Our problem is civil obedience
Just south of here, residents of Urbana confronted federal marshals who had come to capture and return a runaway slave under the Fugitive Slave Act.
At the point of a gun the people of Urbana drove the marshals out of town and preserved that former slave’s freedom.
They knew that morality called upon them to do more than just obey the law.
Historian Howard Zinn gives us sound advice on this question: "Civil disobedience is not our problem.
Our problem is civil obedience.
Our problem is that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of their leaders and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience...Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and cruelty.
Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and the grand thieves are running the country.
That’s our problem."
So what must conscientious Americans do today?
Should we follow the letter of the Fugitive Slave Act and return our fellow human beings to slavery?
Should we write our congressman and then stand by like good Americans and watch our government continue to wage its war of aggression?
Should we continue to legitimize a government of war criminals by paying our taxes?
Members of BMA British Medical Association and various doctors are demanding that an independent scrutiny is urgently required by physicians outside the US military of the behaviour of some of the doctors at Guantanamo towards the detainees.

In a letter signed by members of the British medical profession they claim the silence of the Foreign Office is shameful and reflects the collusion of this country in a war crime.

They are demanding that the British administration does everything in its power to bring back the British residents from Guantanamo.

Must stop funding this administration’s crimes
The times call upon us to do more than we’ve already done; more than we think we can do.
We can no longer afford to limit our protests to what Good Americans are allowed in these terrible days.
And we must stop funding this administration’s crimes against humanity.
We must delegitimate, disobey and disrupt this war and this system.
When the next soldier decides he or she cannot go to Iraq, we must already know which local church will provide sanctuary and not stop there.
We need to surround that church with thousands of disciplined, nonviolent citizens for as long as it takes, daring federal marshals to return that soldier to slavery.
Can we do less than those citizens of Ukraine who stayed in the streets for weeks to get a legitimate government?
Can we do less than people in Iraq who are losing their lives and limbs under this criminal occupation?
Human Rights campaigners in Birmingham came together on Sunday the 10th of December to mark the International Human Rights Day and protest against human rights violations both in Britain and internationally.

Thousands of leaflets were distributed highlighting human rights violations internationally to shoppers who took time off their busy shopping schedule to discuss issues of human rights with the protesters.

The Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign highlighted human rights violations at Guantanamo, where over 450 prisoners are held without trial or access to any legal process.

Atleast 8 of these detainees are British residents for whom the British government refuses to act to obtain their release.

Birmingham Guantanamo Campaign pointed out that they delivered a petition to the Birmingham Council before their December meeting demanding that they ask the British Government to act on behalf of the British residents and secure their release to the safety of Britain where all have their families waiting for them.

Statements were read out from family members of British residents still held at Guantanamo.

The statement from Guantanamo Campaign also pointed out that a large number of muslims are detained in this country under the various Anti-Terror measures and laws including control orders introduced by the Labour administration.

Quite a few of them are released subsequently without any charge but their and their families lives are disturbed for ever.

Anti Racist Campaign, as part of the protest, highlighted the abuses Asylum seekers face in this country.

Some of the asylum seekers are detained and threatened of being repatriated to countries that violate human rights and practice torture.

As a result of these threats and being detained indefinately.

Some have taken their lives while in custody.

A contingent of peoples from Congo under threat of being deported to the so-called 'peaceful democracy' the Democratic Republic of the Congo protested against the British government's policy of sending them back to Congo where they might still face persecution and threats to their safety and security.

The event was supported by the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, who are fighting against the daily violation of human rights the Palestinians face at the hands of the Israeli Defence Force that occupies Palestine.

Several hundred Palestinian women and children are held in Israeli prisons.

Other groups supporting the protest included Iranian Refugee Association.

Refuse to pay a penny in taxes
Americans and Iraqis, young and old, soldier and civilian are slaughtered daily for Empire.
What can we do that is commensurate with what the times demand?
Some of our more heroic friends refuse to pay a penny in taxes; some refuse to pay the war machine’s portion.
Others purposely limit their incomes so they owe nothing to the IRS.
But here’s something that every one of us can do right now that is not particularly heroic; that carries little or no risk.
Withhold a token amount from what the IRS says you owe.
You will eventually get a series of letters trying to collect your 25 or 100 dollars.
They will expend much time, effort, and stationery to no avail.
Millions of us doing this will send the message that we will delegitimate, disobey and disrupt this war and this system.

Think about what you are being ordered to do
Today I beseech every soldier, sailor, marine, reservist and guardsman who can hear my voice or gets this message: brothers and sisters in arms, in the name of humanity, think about what you are being ordered to do.
It is not only your right it is your duty to disobey unlawful orders.
This war is grotesquely and monstrously unlawful.
It is precisely what was condemned at Nuremberg.
Look deep within yourselves.
Do the right thing and say NO to this war.
Hold on to your humanity.  Refuse to participate.
Apply for CO. status.  Turn from this criminal operation into the arms of a loving, disciplined and powerful movement that will be there for you as long as you need it.
It is already beginning to happen.
Camilo Mejia, Jeremy Hinzman and Kevin Benderman have quit publicly.
Nearly 6,000 soldiers have deserted quietly in the last two years.
If even today you are on your way to Iraq, scheduled to pass through Shannon airport like 160,000 U.S. troops did last year, know that members of the Irish Parliament along with a former commandant of the Irish Army are urging you to not get back on that plane, to seek asylum in Ireland.
If we are well organized; if we are there for young soldiers who leave the military; if we refuse to be silenced and frightened by an immoral law; if we refuse to be “Good Americans;” if we do what history demands in this critical hour we can grind this war machine to a halt.
We can put an end to the suffering and the war crimes.
We can absolve our complicity.
Will we do this together?

Torture and the American Soul
The United States, long the self-proclaimed global human-rights standard-bearer, is now regularly cited by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch for gross violations.
We subject people, many of whom have no connection to terrorists, to unimaginable pain.
We claim to be fighting terror, but are terrorizing hundreds, if not thousands of people, in the process.
The only way to stop it, and hence reclaim our soul, is to refuse to allow torture to be committed in our name.
This month marks one year since the revelations of torture at Abu Ghraib.
It also marks two years since the start of the Iraq War.
On March 20 I'll be joining hundreds of other area residents in a march for peace and decency and to reclaim our national soul.

Danish scientist Niels Harrit on nano-thermite in the WTC dust.

Niels Harrit, you and eight other researchers conclude in this article that it was nano-thermite that caused these buildings to collapse.

We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center.

One sample was collected by a Manhattan resident about ten minutes after the collapse of the second WTC Tower, two the next day, and a fourth about a week later.

The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

The carbon content of the red material indicates that an organic substance is present.

This would be expected for super-thermite formulations in order to produce high gas pressures upon ignition and thus make them explosive.

So you found nano-thermite in the World Trade Center buildings, why do you think it caused the collapses?

A new scientific article concludes that impacts from the two hijacked aircraft did not cause the collapses in 2001.
We turn our attention to 9/11 — the major attack in New York.
Apparently the two airplane-impacts did not cause the towers to collapse, according to a newly published scientific article.
Researchers found nano-thermite explosive in the rubble, that cannot have come from the planes.
They believe several tonnes of explosives were placed in the buildings in advance.
Niels Harrit, you and eight other researchers conclude in this article, that it was nano-thermite that caused these buildings to collapse. What is nano-thermite?
Niels Harrit   We found nano-thermite in the rubble.
We are not saying only nano-thermite was used.
Thermite itself dates back to 1893.
It is a mixture of aluminum and rust-powder, which react to create intense heat.
The reaction produces iron, heated to 2500 °C.
This can be used to do welding.   It can also be used to melt other iron.
Nanotechnology makes things smaller.   So in nano-thermite, this powder from 1893 is reduced to tiny particles, perfectly mixed.
When these react, the intense heat develops much more quickly.
Nano-thermite can be mixed with additives to give off intense heat, or serve as a very effective explosive.
It contains more energy than dynamite, and can be used as rocket fuel.
Danish TV2   I Googled nano-thermite, and not much has been written about it.   Is it a widely known scientific substance?   Or is it so new that other scientists are hardly aware of it?
Niels Harrit   It is a collective name for substances with high levels of energy.
If civilian researchers (like myself) are not familiar with it, it is probably because they do not do much work with explosives.
As for military scientists, you would have to ask them.
I do not know how familiar they are with nanotechnology.
Danish TV2   So you found this substance in the WTC, why do you think it caused the collapses?
Niels Harrit   Well, it's an explosive.   Why else would it be there?
Danish TV2   You believe the intense heat melted the building?s steel support structure, and caused the building to collapse like a house of cards?
Niels Harrit   I cannot say precisely, as this substance can serve both purposes.
It can explode and break things apart, and it can melt things.
Both effects were probably used, as I see it.
Molten metal pours out of the South Tower several minutes before the collapse.
This indicates the whole structure was being weakened in advance.
Then the regular explosives come into play.
The actual collapse sequence had to be perfectly timed, all the way down.
Danish TV2   What quantities are we talking about?
Niels Harrit   A lot.   There were only two planes, but three skyscrapers collapsed.
We know roughly how much dust was created.
The pictures show huge quantities, everything but the steel was pulverised.
And we know roughly how much unreacted thermite we have found.

This is the “loaded gun”, material that did not ignite for some reason.
We are talking about tonnes.   Over 10 tonnes, possibly 100 tonnes.
Danish TV2   Ten tonnes, possibly 100 tonnes, in three buildings?   And these substances are not normally found in such buildings?
Niels Harrit   No.   These materials are extremely advanced.
Danish TV2   How do you place such material in a skyscraper, on all the floors?
Niels Harrit   How you would get it in?
Danish TV2   Yes.
Niels Harrit   If I had to transport it in those quantities I would use pallets.   Get a truck and move it in on pallets.
Danish TV2   Why hasn't this been discovered earlier?
Niels Harrit   By whom?
Danish TV2   The caretakers, for example.     If you are moving 10 to 100 tonnes of nano-thermite around, and placing it on all the floors.     I am just surprised no-one noticed.
Niels Harrit   As a journalist, you should address that question to the company responsible for security at the WTC.
Danish TV2   So you are in no doubt the material was present?
Niels Harrit   You cannot fudge this kind of science.
We have found it.   Unreacted thermite.
Danish TV2   What responses has your article received around the world?
Niels Harrit   It is completely new knowledge for me.
It was only published last Friday.   So it is too early to say.
But the article may not be as groundbreaking as you think.
Hundreds of thousands of people around the world, have long known that the three buildings were demolished.

This has been crystal clear.
Our research is just the last nail in the coffin.
This is not the 'smoking gun', it is the 'loaded gun'.
Each day, thousands of people realise that the WTC was demolished.
That is something unstoppable.
Danish TV2   Why has no-one discovered earlier that there was nano-thermite in the buildings?   Almost ten years have passed.
Niels Harrit   You mean in the dust?
Danish TV2   Yes.
Niels Harrit   It was by chance that someone looked at the dust with a microscope.
They are tiny red chips.
The biggest are 1 mm in size, and can be seen with the naked eye.
But you need a microscope to see the vast majority.
It was by chance that someone discovered them two years ago.
Danish TV2   It has taken 18 months to prepare the scientific article you refer to.
Niels Harrit   It is a very comprehensive article based on thorough research.
Danish TV2   You have been working on this for several years, because it didn't make sense to you.
Niels Harrit   Yes, over two years actually.
It all started when I saw the collapse of Building 7, the third skyscraper.
It collapsed seven hours after the twin towers.
And there were only two airplanes.
When you see a 47-storey building, 186m tall, collapse in 6.5 seconds, and you are a scientist, you think “what?”.
I had to watch it again… and again.
I hit the button 10 times, and my jaw dropped lower and lower.
Firstly, I had never heard of that building before.
And there was no visible reason why it should collapse in that way, straight down, in 6.5 seconds.
I have had no rest since that day.
Danish TV2   Ever since 9/11 there has been speculation, and conspiracy theories.   What do you say to viewers who hear about your research and say, “we?ve heard it all before, there are lots of conspiracy theories”.   What would you say to convince them that this is different?
Niels Harrit   I think there is only one conspiracy theory worth mentioning, the one involving 19 hijackers.
I think viewers should ask themselves what evidence they have seen to support the official conspiracy theory.
If anyone has seen evidence, I would like to hear about it
No-one has been formally charged.   No-one is 'wanted'.
Our work should lead to demands for a proper criminal investigation of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Because it never happened.   We are still waiting for it.
We hope our results will be used as technical evidence when that day comes.
Danish TV2   Niels Harrit, fascinating, thanks for coming in.
Niels Harrit   My pleasure
ITALIAN SAYS 9-11 SOLVED
It’s common knowledge, he reveals
CIA — Mossad behind terror attacks
By the Staff of American Free Press
Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga, who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio, has told Italy’s oldest and most widely read newspaper that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad, and that this was common knowledge among global intelligence agencies.
In what translates awkwardly into English, Cossiga told the newspaper Corriere della Sera:
“All the [intelligence services] of America and Europe… know well that the disastrous attack has been planned and realized from the Mossad, with the aid of the Zionist world in order to put under accusation the Arabic countries and in order to induce the western powers to take part … in Iraq [and] Afghanistan.”
Cossiga was elected president of the Italian Senate in July 1983 before winning a landslide election to become president of the country in 1985, and he remained until 1992.
Cossiga’s tendency to be outspoken upset the Italian political establishment, and he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio.
This was a rogue intelligence network under NATO auspices that carried out bombings across Europe in the 1960s, 1970s and ’80s.
Gladio’s specialty was to carry out what they termed 'false flag' operations — terror attacks that were blamed on their domestic and geopolitical opposition.
In March 2001, Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:
“You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game.
The reason was quite simple: to force … the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security.”
Cossiga first expressed his doubts about 9-11 in 2001, and is quoted by 9-11 researcher Webster Tarpley saying:
“The mastermind of the attack must have been a sophisticated mind, provided with ample means not only to recruit fanatic kamikazes, but also highly specialized personnel.
I add one thing: it could not be accomplished without infiltrations in the radar and flight security personnel.”
Coming from a widely respected former head of state, Cossiga’s assertion that the 9-11 attacks were an inside job and that this is common knowledge among global intelligence agencies is illuminating.
It is one more eye-opening confirmation that has not been mentioned by America’s propaganda machine in print or on TV.
Nevertheless, because of his experience and status in the world, Cossiga cannot be discounted as a crackpot.

US to Develop New Hydrogen Bomb
by Ralph Vartabedian
The Energy Department will announce today a contract to develop the nation's first new hydrogen bomb in two decades, involving a collaboration between three national weapons laboratories, The Times has learned.
The new bomb will include design features from all three labs, though Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Bay Area appears to have taken the lead position in the project. The Los Alamos and Sandia labs in New Mexico will also be part of the project.

The Russian planes - said to be long-range bombers - had earlier been followed by Norwegian F16 jets.
Russia recently revived a Cold War-era practice of flying bombers on long-range patrols.
A Norwegian officer, Lt Col John Inge Oegland, told the BBC the Russian Tupolev Tu-95 Bear bombers flew in international airspace from the Barents Sea to the Atlantic, before turning back.
Two Norwegian F-16s shadowed them on Thursday morning and another two went up later, he said.
There have been several similar incidents in recent months, Lt-Col Oegland added.
"Norway is following the increased Russian activity in the far north with interest," he told the BBC News website.
He said the Russian flights were not causing alarm in Norway.   "Our systems are adequate," he said, when asked whether Norway was bolstering its security in the area.

9/11
By all accounts, the unprecedented events of September 11th, 2001 changed the way our country functions, and in turn, the world.
It is therefore critical that conscientious Americans, as well as people around the globe, understand these events in detail.
Unfortunately the official reports, including The 9/11 Commission Report and the NIST WTC Report, written by those working under the direction of the Bush Administration, have been proven to be elaborate cover-ups.
Film: 9/11 Revisited
September 11th Revisited is perhaps the most riveting film ever made about the destruction of the World Trade Center.
This is a powerful documentary which features eyewitness accounts and archived news footage that was shot on September 11, 2001 but never replayed on television.
Featuring interviews with eyewitnesses & firefighters, along with expert analysis by Professor Steven E. Jones, Professor David Ray Griffin, MIT Engineer Jeffrey King, and Professor James H. Fetzer.
This film provides stunning evidence that explosives were used in the complete demolition of the WTC Twin Towers and WTC Building 7.

Moving from "the myth" through "the analysis" and into "the players," careful deconstruction of the official story set right alongside clean, clear science.

Anti-war protesters filled the streets of Washington on Saturday in one of the largest protests since the invasion of Iraq. Veterans and military families joined lawmakers, peace groups and celebrities to urge Congress and President Bush to bring the troops home now.
Protest organizers United For Peace and Justice estimated 500,000 took part in the demonstration.
In California, smaller rallies were held in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento.
In Washington, marchers converged on the National Mall for a two-hour rally.   The crowd included people who came on 300 buses from 40 states.

I accept the sun is a much greater factor in global weather than human-made activity.
That it is possible climate change will become a bigger problem but also more probable the sun is presently taking us into a mini-cold period.
That the increase in human-made carbon dioxide combined in the stratosphere with other Earth-releasing-of-warmth blocking chemicals is causing a wave of new tree/plant growth in areas not seen for many millennium.
That seeding of the clouds being done by NATO with its toxic compounds is completely destructive to the soil, seas and inland waters beneath, and many vulnerable humans and varied life, and that the politicians responsible for this NATO destructive activity should be held accountable for such as being enemies of Earth's eco-structure and livability.
From the video 'Holes in Heaven' — Brooks Agnew, Earth Tornographer
In 1983 I did radio tornography with 30 watts looking for oil in the ground.
I found 26 oil wells over a nine state area.
100 hundred percent of the time was accurate, which is just 30 watts of power beaming straight into solid rock.
HAARP uses a billion watts beamed straight into the ionosphere for experiments.
Picture these strings on the piano as layers of the Earth, each one has its own frequency.
What we used to do is beam radio waves into the ground and it would vibrate any 'strings' that were present in the ground.
We might get a sound back like ___ and we would say, that's natural gas.
We might get a sound back like ____ and we'd say that's crude oil.
We were able to identify each frequency.
We accomplished this with just 30 watts of radio power.
If you do this with a billion watts the vibrations are so violent that the entire piano would shake.
In fact the whole house would shake.
In fact the vibrations could be so severe under ground they could even cause an earthquake.

The Campaign in Black and White
By ALEXANDER COCKBURN
H e's a smart fellow and so Barack Obama surely knew what was in store for him if he ever looked like taking the Democratic nomination away from Hillary Clinton.
The Clintons' relationship with African-Americans has always been starkly instrumental.
When he was in trouble with white voters in New Hampshire in 1992 Governor Bill sprinted back to Little Rock to preside over the execution of a mentally retarded black man.
To ensure her husband's victory in his reelection race in 1996 Hillary insisted Bill chop poor mothers — a good slice of them black — off the welfare rolls.
Nonetheless many blacks rooted for Bill, absurdly dubbed by Toni Morrison "the first black president" and in the impeachment crisis over Monica Lewinsky they were his most steadfast friends, as Bill recognized when he summoned the Rev Jesse Jackson into the White House to help him pray for forgiveness and redemption.
Other well known landmarks in the Clintons' relations with blacks include Bill Clinton's set-up of Sister Souljah and his disgusting treatment of Lani Guinier and Jocelyn Elders.
The Clintons reach out when they have no alternative and stab you in the back when it seems marginally to their advantage.
They are without doubt among the most unprincipled duos ever to have operated in the upper tiers of American political life.
Obama learned too from Jackson's fate in 1988 when the Chicago preacher took Iowa by storm and surged on unprecedented victories in a slew of spring primaries.
The press ignored the hefty white votes for Jackson and within weeks Jackson had been neutralized by the opportune disclosure (by a black Washington Post reporter) of a private conversation in which Jackson had deprecated New York as "Hymietown".
He spent the rest of the year alternately apologizing and complaining correctly that his function was to "bale up" black votes for the white Democratic ticket.
So Obama tried to inoculate himself by sticking limpet-like in his early Senate days to Senator Joe Lieberman, Israel's most rabid advocate in the U.S. Congress.
Any black community organizer in Chicago is no stranger to the downside of the American dream but Obama purged his rhetoric of populism or outrage and has levitated on soft cushions of hot air about "change", thus emulating Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1932.
As Eva Liddell recently pointed out on this site , FDR talked also in vague terms about change and told jobless and starving Americans that the only thing they had to fear was fear itself.
He was elected and the outgoing Congress rewarded him by repealing prohibition.
Americans duly banished fear and welcomed hope by getting legally drunk.
Obama led a charmed life and then he won Iowa.
Already in New Hampshire Hillary's campaign manager Billy Shaheen had warmed up voters by reminding them Obama was unelectable because of his past "drug use" as a pot-smoker and a cokehead.
Between the tears that established her femininity Hillary snarled that whereas the black Martin Luther King was a merchant of dreams it took a white president, Lyndon Johnson, to get the Civil Rights bill through Congress.
Andrew Cuomo, a prominent New York Democrat, said he was tired of Obama's "shuck and jive".
The former US senator from Nebraska, Bob Kerrey, hammered home the insinuations that Obama had Husain as a middle name, Muslim family affinities and went to school a madrasseh.
Bill Clinton, a career liar, said Obama was a peddler of fairy tales.
Then came the announcement earlier this week of a truce on the growing racial acrimony.
This was instantly broken as Bob Johnson, a communications czar, America's first black billionaire and a big Hillary supporter, stood next to Hillary on a campaign platform in South Carolina and said the Clintons had been fighting for black justice while young Obama was still "doing something in the neighborhood" — i.e., doing drugs behind the schoolyard fence.
Racial decorum is paper-thin at best in America, and already the gloves are half way off.
Obama's home preacher and spiritual counselor, Jeremiah Wright, told a huge and applauding congregation in his church in Chicago that "some argue that blacks should vote for Clinton because her husband was good to us.
That's not true!
He did the same thing to us that he did to Monica Lewinsky."
The Rocky Mountain News excitedly reported that at a stockmen's gathering in Colorado a speaker had joked that if Obama becomes president it won't be called the White House any more.
So now the press is relaying rodeo banter? Of course this went up on the Drudge site in a matter of seconds.
Now the couple have been locked in grim struggle, in Nevada and most momentously for now in South Carolina, scheduled for January 26.
This is called the black primary since it's the contest most likely, on the Democratic side, to be swayed by the large black vote.
Clinton campaign money has been liberally distributed to the all-important black churches whose preachers will be rallying the vote.
The Clintons' instinct is to trash Obama, betting that whatever offense they cause to blacks will abate by the time Hillary has to face a Republican in the fall.
Obama has the same problem in reverse.
Any angry black talk may help him in the short term in South Carolina but would get him trashed by the Clintons and in the press as "divisive" and explode the vital message that he is safely "above" the racial divide.
As the Nevada deadline neared he even invoked Ronald Reagan as a benign and creative force, drawing yelps of reproof from Hillary Clinton on account of Reagan's antilabor record.
As if Clintonism wasn't the quintessence of antilaborism, as articulated by the Democratic Leadership Council.
It won't be long before the Clinton campaign circulates some of Rev Wright's sermons linking Zionism with racism, and brandishes the photo of Mr and Mrs Barack Obama having lunch with the late Edward Said, America's best known Palestinian.
Already they're trying to link Wright's church to Louis Farrakhan.
Jackson can predict accurately to Obama what will happen next and those speeches praising Senator Joseph Lieberman won't help.
No, a Clinton-Obama ticket is not likely.
The Clntons take their fights bitterly and while it may be true that America is ready for a woman president, the notion that it would be similarly receptive to a black president is truly open to challenge.
Hillary Rodham Clinton
...We all know that Sen. Clinton, along with many other Representatives and Senators voted to give George Bush the authority to invade a sovereign nation that was no threat to the USA.
We know that they spinelessly abrogated their constitutional responsibility and duty to declare war.
We (and most of them) know that voting to give an irresponsible person authority to wage war was a devastating mistake.
But I know that knowing all of that —
It will not bring my son or other American dead back.
And it won't bring back Iraq's war dead, either.

Clinton Bucks The Trend and Rakes in Cash From The US Weapons Industry
The US arms industry is backing Hillary Clinton for President and has all but abandoned its traditional allies in the Republican party.
by Leonard Doyle
Mrs Clinton has also emerged as Wall Street’s favourite.
Investment bankers have opened their wallets in unprecedented numbers for the New York senator over the past three months and, in the process, dumped their earlier favourite, Barack Obama.
Mrs Clinton’s wooing of the defence industry is all the more remarkable given the frosty relations between Bill Clinton and the military during his presidency.
An analysis of campaign contributions shows senior defence industry employees are pouring money into her war chest in the belief that their generosity will be repaid many times over with future defence contracts.
Employees of the top five US arms manufacturers — Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, General Dynamics and Raytheon — gave Democratic presidential candidates $103,900, with only $86,800 going to the Republicans.
“The contributions clearly suggest the arms industry has reached the conclusion that Democratic prospects for 2008 are very good indeed,” said Thomas Edsall, an academic at Columbia University in New York.
Many women and children wounded and killed in US attack
Republican administrations are by tradition much stronger supporters of US armaments programmes and Pentagon spending plans than Democratic governments.
Relations between the arms industry and Bill Clinton soured when he slimmed down the military after the end of the Cold War. His wife, however, has been careful not to make the same mistake.
After her election to the Senate, she became the first New York senator on the armed services committee, where she revealed her hawkish tendencies by supporting the invasion of Iraq.
Although she now favours a withdrawal of US troops, her position on Iran is among the most warlike of all the candidates - Democrat or Republican.
This week, she said that, if elected president, she would not rule out military strikes to destroy Tehran’s nuclear weapons facilities.
While on the armed services committee, Mrs Clinton has befriended key generals and has won the endorsement of General Wesley Clarke, who ran Nato’s war in Kosovo.
A former presidential candidate himself, he is spoken of as a potential vice-presidential running mate.
Mrs Clinton has been a regular visitor to Iraq and Afghanistan and is careful to focus her criticisms of the Iraq war on President Bush, rather than the military.
The arms industry has duly taken note.
So far, Mrs Clinton has received $52,600 in contributions from individual arms industry employees.
That is more than half the sum given to all Democrats and 60 per cent of the total going to Republican candidates.
Election fundraising laws ban individuals from donating more than $4,600 but contributions are often “bundled” to obtain influence over a candidate.
Many women and children wounded and killed in US attack
The arms industry has even deserted the biggest supporter of the Iraq war, Senator John McCain, who is also a member of the armed services committee and a decorated Vietnam War veteran.
He has been only $19,200.
Weapons-makers are equally unimpressed by the former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Despite a campaign built largely around the need for an aggressive US military and a determination to stay the course in Iraq, he is behind Mrs Clinton in the affections of arms executives.
Mr Giuliani may be suffering because of his strong association with the failed policies of President Bush and the fact he is he is known as a social liberal.
Mrs Clinton’s closest competitor in raising cash from the arms industry is the former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who raised just $32,000.
“Arms industry profits are so heavily dependent on government contracts that companies in this field want to be sure they do not have hostile relations with the White House,” added Mr Edsall.
The industry’s strong support for Mrs Clinton indicates that she is their firm favourite to win the Democratic nomination in the spring and the presidential election in November 2008.
In the last presidential race, George Bush raised more than $800,000 - twice the sum collected by his Democratic rival John Kerry.
Mr Edsall’s analysis of the figures reveals that, over the past 10 years, the defence industry has favoured Republicans over Democrats by a 3-2 margin, making Mrs Clinton’s position even more remarkable.
