International Gun Trade Targeted at U.N.
by Haider Rizvi
UNITED NATIONS — As diplomats from around the world gather this week to lay the groundwork for a major June summit on arms control, leading rights advocacy groups are demanding that governments agree on a proposed treaty that would ban the illegal trade in guns.
"No one but a criminal would knowingly sell a gun to a murderer, yet governments can sell weapons to regimes with a history of human rights violations or to countries where weapons will go to war criminals," says Barbara Stocking, director of the international humanitarian group Oxfam International.
Oxfam, which is part of the Control Arms Campaign, an umbrella group representing various organizations, believes that existing arms controls are powerless to protect innocent civilians from violence.
"This year, the world has a choice" says Stocking.   "Either it continues to ignore the massive human cost or it finally acts to control the arms trade."
This week's meeting at the United Nations is part of a follow-up process to the world body's "program of action" to fight the illicit trade in small arms, an international instrument adopted by a U.N. Conference in July 2001.
Last July, the U.N. held its second biennial meeting on small arms control, but diplomatic efforts to negotiate a legally binding treaty failed mainly because of opposition from countries such as the United States, Iran, and Egypt.
Independent arms control experts argue that in the absence of a legally binding treaty, the existing international instrument would remain toothless and ineffective in curbing the illegal trade in guns and other small weapons.
The existing agreement sets up a system to record the serial numbers of small arms when they are sold or transferred between countries, but it allows any country to refuse to disclose information about arms sales on the grounds of "national security."
The Control Arms Campaign, which also includes Amnesty International and the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), fears that this may be used as an excuse by those selling arms to oppressive regimes.
Last year, Amnesty International and IANSA released a report suggesting that arms sold to unaccountable and poorly trained military forces are often used to suppress human rights and exploit natural resources.
The groups noted that a large number of women and girls were increasingly vulnerable to armed violence, whether they were directly involved in the fighting or dealing with the economic, social, and emotional consequences of the loss of male relatives.
Currently, there are more than 600 million guns in circulation around the world.   While there is no authoritative figure on illegal gun sales, researchers with Amnesty International and IANSA estimate that authorized small arms are worth at least $21 billion.   They include pistols, revolvers, rifles, and light machine guns.
The study, entitled "The Impact of Guns on Women's Lives," identifies over 1,100 companies manufacturing small arms and ammunition in at least 98 countries, and says that these numbers are likely to grow.
The Amnesty research shows that G-8 countries — the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and Russia — account for more than 80 percent of global supplies of arms.   Six of them are among the top 10 arms exporters in a trade valued at about $28 billion a year.
Rights groups say that while gun manufacturers and merchants in rich countries continue to make millions of dollars in profits from arms supplies, it is the residents of poor countries that pay the price in bloodletting and the suffering of innocent people.
"Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone manufacture very few arms, yet they have been flooded with weapons, which have been used to kill, maim, displace, and impoverish millions of people," says Denise Searle, Amnesty's senior campaign director.
Despite the presence of 17,000 U.N. troops in Haiti, armed violence continues in that country.   Last month, Haitians were due to elect a representative government, but failed to do so because the interim administration deemed it impossible to conduct polls in the face of raging violence in Port-au-Prince, the capital city.
"Time and again, peacekeeping efforts have been undermined by the failure of governments to introduce effective arms controls," she adds.
"For the sake of millions of men, women, and children who live in continuous fear of armed violence, world leaders must seek this historic opportunity to begin negotiations on an arms trade treaty."

From factory to the firing line:
The story of one bullet

How do legally manufactured AK-47 bullets get into the hands of mercenaries and child soldiers?   Their journey tells us much about the modern world, finds Foreign Editor David Pratt
This is the story of a journey; one that begins in a drab industrial complex, shifts to the splendour of luxury hotels and villas, then ricochets across oceans and continents before its final stage is played out in some beleaguered country.   Though long and tortuous, it’s a trip that invariably finishes swiftly — at roughly 700 metres per second — and its ultimate destination is death.
This is the story of a 7.62x39mm copper-plated, steel-jacketed, high velocity cartridge for the famous AK-47 assault rifle, the most commonly used bullet around the world.   The new film Lord Of War — which stars Nicolas Cage as amoral but charismatic arms dealer Yuri Orlov — opens with a rapid-fire montage which tells the story of a bullet, from its birth in a manufacturing plant, to its fatal impact on a child soldier.   But what’s the real story behind the Hollywood device?
As a war reporter, I have often come across AK-47 cartridges.   I’ve seen them stacked in foil-sealed wooden crates in the caves and jungle hideouts of rebel armies.   I’ve watched fighters shoving them into their familiar 30-round curved box magazines, which in turn are slipped into khaki green canvas pouches strapped to the bodies of the gunmen for whom they are simply the stock in a deadly trade.   Time and again I’ve been around when they were fired, the discarded empty casings tinkling to the ground then rolling underfoot in the dirt and sand of battlefields, murder scenes and massacres, from Bosnia to Iraq, Congo to Angola.
I’ve even fired them myself.   The first time was in the 1980s, while travelling clandestinely as a reporter in the mountains of Afghanistan with mujahidin guerrillas fighting the Russian invaders of their country.
“Shoot, shoot, mister Daoud!” insisted the commander of my rebel hosts for the umpteenth time , as we rested in a remote craggy valley.   With his holy warriors looking on, the commander slotted a full clip of the boat-tailed bullets into a Soviet-made AK-47 and thrust the weapon towards me.   The time had long since passed for acceptable excuses about journalistic ethics and my non-combatant status.
Judging by the looks of the fighters around me, this had simply boiled down to an issue of initiation and acceptance; a very Afghan thing about loyalty and brotherhood.   To refuse now would have made my presence at best uncomfortable, and at worst, untenable.
A battered plastic bottle was set up as a target.   As I squeezed the trigger and the first rounds cracked against some rocks reasonably close to the bottle, the gawping bearded guerrillas who had clustered around began to grin.   It wasn’t a question of them ever expecting me to fire in earnest, just about passing some strange macho muster.
After only minutes of instruction, the ease with which I was able to handle the rifle was proof of the AK-47’s reputation as a so-called “user-friendly” weapon.   It’s the firearm of choice among mercenary suppliers who know that those who end up shouldering this oddly toy-like weapon — which fires 600 rounds a minute, each powerful enough to punch a hole through a man’s chest from 100 yards — will have had little or no proper military training.   Put another way, it’s ideal for everyone from Rwandan peasant farmers to Liberian schoolkids-turned-killers.
That afternoon, following my noisy initiation in the Hindu Kush mountains, I picked up a few of the dark copper-coloured shells that lay in the dust to keep as souvenirs.   En route through Pakistan on my way home from Afghanistan, I suddenly decided to throw them away, ostensibly for fear of being pulled aside at airport security checks, but also because of some lurking guilt about coveting a trophy of violence.   Pausing to drop them into a bin outside Islamabad airport, I couldn’t help wondering where these bullets had first come from.   How did these rounds make their way from a high-tech manufacturing plant to the war-torn wilds of Afghanistan ?
It was, of course, in Russia — Afghanistan’s mighty former communist neighbour — that the AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947) rifle, and those eight-gram bullets , were invented.   The brainchild of a second world war tank sergeant, Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, the AK-47 was the weapon favoured during the cold war years by non-Western powers.   Robust, simple, cost-effective, it was the mainstay of “military assistance programmes,” in which Russia supplied its communist allies around the world — officially and unofficially — thus ensuring the AK-47’s global proliferation.
With 100 million AK-47s across the planet, the rifle’s familiar silhouette is part of modern iconography, making its way onto the flag of the Islamist Hezbollah movement and the Mozambique national coat of arms.   In other African countries, Kalash — a shortened form of Kalashnikov — has even become a boys’ name.
Whatever we may think about the morality of arms manufacturing, vast numbers of AK-47 bullets start life legally in Russia.   In the grimy, polluted city of Tula, 170km south of Moscow, bullet-making is a way of life.   This city — home to 550,000 people and hosting a military garrison of airborne troops, a 16th century kremlin as well as various onion-domed churches and cathedrals — manufactures only one other product: the samover, Russia’s answer to the teapot.
Since at least 1940, the Tula Cartridge Plant has been producing rounds that fit the AK-47.   Today it is the biggest domestic and export supplier of the bullets, which are marketed abroad under the “Wolf” trademark.   At the factory, which resembles a scene from a socialist realist painting, 7.62mm rounds trundle off the conveyor belt by the million in a choice of either brass or bimetal jacket with a steel case.   These are packed by some of the 7000-strong workforce into handy boxes of 20, or crated in larger numbers for bulk orders.
Many of the new rounds are likely to be sold through the Russian arms export agency Rosoboronexport, which also deals in older bullets sourced from cold war stockpiles.   Ever since those tense years four decades ago, Russia and other central and eastern European countries have been sitting on billions of rounds manufactured for use in a full-scale war with the West that never came.
“Much of this ammunition is 20 or 30 years old, all from the 1970s and 1980s, so it’s near impossible to check on where they come from, and that’s just the start of the problem,” insists Alex Vines, a human rights and Africa analyst who has intensively researched the arms trade.   According to Vines, former Soviet republics desperate for hard currency were only too happy to sell off their large surplus armouries in the wake of the communist meltdown.

It’s at this point that our bullet, especially if it originates from an older stockpile, can slip into a far more sinister channel, to become part of the vast ordnance on offer to a new breed of east European racketeers.
And what a breed they are.   Gun-runners extraordinaire, like the Ukrainian Leonid Minin, or the Russian Victor Bout.   Many people say that Yuri Orlov, the character played by Nicolas Cage in Lord Of War, is based on Victor Bout.
Indeed, the movie’s director, Andrew Niccol, is rumoured to have rented the Russian-built Antanov cargo plane used in a fictional African arms delivery scene from Victor Bout himself.   In another case of fiction mirroring fact, the thousands of AK-47s used by extras in the film were bought by Niccol on the international arms market.   Given that the average going rate for an AK-47 in Africa is $30, it would hardly be surprising.   Niccol has said: “I actually did become an arms dealer in the making of the film in the logistics of making it.   I had to get hold of a tank for a scene and 3000 Kalashnikovs.   I bought real Kalashnikovs because it was cheaper than getting fake ones.”   One can only assume that Niccol was making a political point by showing just how easy such a transaction is.
Men like Leonid Minin and Victor Bout are typical of the new breed of racketeer.   So it’s possible that, on its journey, our bullet was one of five million catalogued in documents uncovered during a police raid on room 341 of Minin’s co-owned luxury Europa Hotel in Cinisello Balsamo, outside Milan, on August 4, 2000.   Or perhaps it was among the 113 tons of 7.62 rounds the Ukrainian delivered by air into the west African country of Ivory Coast just a few weeks earlier — a dispatch that was revealed in a fax discovered during the same police operation.
Ironically, the Italian police weren’t there to arrest Minin on any arms offences.   When they crashed through his hotel room door at 3am that August morning, it was because of a tip-off from an unpaid prostitute.   During the raid — in a scene one reporter described as “straight from a Tarantino film” — the leader of the so-called Odessa Mafia was found freebasing cocaine, naked, while flanked by a quartet of call girls.
“The Italian police arrested him for a minor offence and only later found out who he really is.   Then they started to take an interest in the case,” complains Johan Peleman, a chain-smoking Belgian and one of the world’s most prominent arms-trade investigators, who has served on several UN expert panels.
To call Peleman’s task difficult would be the ultimate understatement.   The world in which “bullet detectives” like him operate is characterised by a complex array of international and local arms brokering syndicates, clandestine air transport, money laundering, embargo busting and ruthless regimes.   It’s a shopping-in-the-shadows world, where inventories of illegal arms — which could easily include our bullet — circulate between traders and suppliers.   Then, when a customer is found (usually someone prevented from buying in the mainstream government markets), our rifle round is shipped by civilian cargo companies to a transit point, from where it is transported to its final destination in a war zone.
Fake end-user certificates (EUCs) are the first line of camouflage for the illegal arms dealers.   In theory, these documents are provided by a purchasing government to guarantee that that country is the ultimate user of the arms being bought.   But it is rarely this simple.   “I have come across countless fake EUCs,” confirms arms analyst Alex Vines.
One such example was the Pecos company of Guinea in West Africa, a front organisation that supplied a seemingly endless stream of counterfeit EUCs to the arms smuggling network of Victor Bout (pronounced “butt” in Russian).   A former KGB major, Bout has been referred to as the “poster boy for a new generation of post-cold war arms dealers”, who play an insidious role in areas where the weapons trade has been embargoed by the United Nations.   Though worldwide in scope, Bout’s main trafficking beat is the volatile Central African Great Lakes region, from Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Angola.
A specialist air transport fixer since the early 1990s, Bout has been the overseer of a complex network of more than 50 aircraft, distributed among several airline companies and freight-forwarding outfits.
Although the arms merchant — formerly based in the United Arab Emirates and now rumoured to be in Russia — has been pursued for years by bullet detectives like Johan Peleman , a positive visual ID only became available when two Belgian journalists bumped into him at an airstrip in remote rebel-held Congo in 2001.   Bout was then working with Jean-Pierre Bemba, the leader of the Mouvement Pour La Libération Du Congo.
During that time, one of the journalists, Dirk Draulans, saw two of Victor Bout’s planes, carrying the registration numbers 9T-ALC and MLC — both unknown to international aviation authorities.   Later, a Belgian researcher verified that the aircraft had been flying between Uganda and DRC at least until November 2001.
UN officials have accused Victor Bout of using many “flags of convenience” and subcontracting arrangements for his aircraft to facilitate illegal arms and diamond smuggling activities, despite Bout’s assertions that his aircraft were simply used to deliver supplies to mining sites and take valuable commodities like coltan and cassiterite out of places like DRC and Angola.
“Landing heavy cargo planes with illicit cargoes in war conditions and breaking international embargoes such as the one on Angola requires more than individual effort,” stated a UN report on Angola in December 2000.   “It takes an internationally organised network of individuals, well-funded, well-connected and well versed in brokering and logistics, with the ability to move illicit cargo around the world without raising the suspicions of the law.   One organisation, headed, or at least to all appearances outwardly controlled by Victor Bout, is such an organisation.”
As ever, the UN’s use of earnest rhetoric in pointing out the obvious is masterful.   Across Africa, bullets, guns and other weapons are delivered with alarming regularity in illegal operations that are chastised in a similarly feeble manner by global bodies, yet remain immune from direct international legal action.
In response, campaigners against the arms trade are placing great emphasis on the need for all states to mark shells and cartridges with codes or marks denoting batch/lot number, manufacturer and country of manufacture, year of production and a code identifying the original recipient of the ammunition lot — such as a police or military force.   All of which would help in identifying the convoluted supply chain either back to its original source or to its real end-user.
During many years of working across the African continent, I have stood on countless dirt airstrips watching Soviet-era cargo planes being loaded up with anything from gold and diamonds, to rocket-propelled grenade launchers and mortars, much of which has little or no accompanying “paperwork”.
“African conflicts are wasteful of ammunition and are always in need of more.   The guys who carry this stuff in are just flying truck drivers,” says Alex Vines.   He has a point.
In August 2003, at the height of Liberia’s rainy season, I flew into the capital, Monrovia, on the second humanitarian aid flight ever to have reached the country since the upsurge of the civil war a few weeks before.   The aircraft was flown by a group of volunteer pilots who told me that days earlier, coming in to land on the first aid flight, they had almost collided with an unscheduled incoming cargo plane.   “Later we found out it was flying in ammunition and guns for President Charles Taylor, which some people said was coming from Libya,” the 58-year-old Swedish pilot told me.   “It’s always the same across Africa, you never know who is flying what.”   One member of the pilot’s own crew even admitted to having “ferried a few bullets” in his time.
For arms dealers, it’s well worth the risk.   According to Johan Peleman, while it’s difficult to put an accurate figure on the profits men like Victor Bout make, back in 2002 the Russian was sitting on a fortune.   “The Rwandan government alone owed Bout $21 million.   That gives you some idea of the sums involved in his business.   But that doesn’t include barter operations — arms for coffee or arms for diamonds,” says Peleman.

There is, of course, an altogether different price to be paid for every bullet that lands in those war-torn African lands .   Take the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been the focus of Victor Bout’s activities in recent years.   Sustained by the easy availability of bullets and guns, war crimes and other human rights violations have been widespread and almost non-stop.   Extra-judicial executions, unlawful killings of civilians, torture, rape and other sexual violence, the use of child soldiers, abductions, looting of villages and forced displacement are among the atrocities to which bullet suppliers are callously indifferent.
How many rounds delivered by these international dealers in death might have been used during May and June last year when dissident elements of the RCD-Goma opposed to the transitional government, took control of the city of Bukavu in South Kivu province in Democratic Republic of Congo? During the terrible days that followed, these dissident militias subjected the civilian population to systematic human rights abuse until government troops retook the city.   Many of the guns and bullets they used were undoubtedly supplied illegally.
More than 60 people were killed and more than 100 women and girls were reportedly raped, including 17 who were aged 13 or younger.   Some were raped as their parents watched helplessly.   One victim was only three years old.   Extensive looting was also commonplace.   The abusive acts became known popularly among the militiamen as “opération TDF” — operation [mobile] telephones, dollars, daughters — because this is what the soldiers demanded at gunpoint after forcing their way into civilian homes.
Many of the killings took place during looting, often after the victims had given all they had or simply because, as one informant told Amnesty International, “they didn’t like the look on your face”.   On more than one occasion soldiers reportedly levelled their AK-47s at children’s heads to extort money from householders, demanding dollars for the life of each child.
The victims included Lambert Mobole Bitorwa, who was shot at home in front of his children; Jolie Namwezi, reportedly shot in front of her children after she resisted rape; Murhula Kagezi, a student killed at his home while his father was in the next room fetching a mobile phone to give to the soldiers; and 13-year-old Marie Chimbale Tambwe, shot dead on the balcony of her home apparently because a militiaman believed she had pulled a face at him while he was looting in the street below.

This is the bloody endgame in the story of our 7.62x39mm copper-plated, steel-jacketed bullet.   On arrival at its final destination, entering the tissue of its victim, it usually travels forwards for about 26cm before beginning to yaw.   Ballistics experts and doctors speak then of “damage patterns” — a sanitised term for the way the bullet rips through abdomens, legs, arms or brains, sometimes deflecting off bones before exiting, leaving a gaping, bloody hole.
If all this is to stop, then tighter global controls are imperative.   The question is whether the political will needed to implement such legislation exists against the murky backdrop of a lucrative business that deals in genuine weapons of mass destruction.   Just as the profiteering has become a way of life for the dealers, so it is, too, for those who dispatch the bullets by pulling the trigger.
Some years ago in Liberia, I met a 14-year-old soldier who called himself J-Boy.   He was sitting on a bridge overlooking the Po River, smoking a joint and loading some of those familiar copper-coloured cartridges into his rifle.   Had J-Boy himself ever killed anyone, I asked.
“Oh sure man, plenty, plenty,” he assured me with a smile.   “With this good AK and these real fine bullets, it’s way easy.”

And that is just what the military spent
Ike Was Right About War Machine
(CBS) The following is a weekly 60 Minutes commentary by CBS News correspondent Andy Rooney.
It was first broadcast October 2, 2005.
Andy Rooney
I’m not really clear how much a billion dollars is but the United States — our United States — is spending $5.6 billion a month fighting this war in Iraq that we never should have gotten into.
We still have 139,000 soldiers in Iraq today.
Almost 2,000 Americans have died there.   For what?
Now we have the hurricanes to pay for.   One way our government pays for a lot of things is by borrowing from countries like China.
Another way the government is planning to pay for the war and the hurricane damage is by cutting spending for things like Medicare prescriptions, highway construction, farm payments, AMTRAK, National Public Radio and loans to graduate students.   Do these sound like the things you’d like to cut back on to pay for Iraq?
I’ll tell you where we ought to start saving: on our bloated military establishment.
We’re paying for weapons we’ll never use.
No other Country spends the kind of money we spend on our military.   Last year Japan spent $42 billion.   Italy spent $28 billion, Russia spent only $19 billion.   The United States spent $455 billion.
We have 8,000 tanks for example.   One Abrams tank costs 150 times as much as a Ford station wagon.
We have more than 10,000 nuclear weapons — enough to destroy all of mankind.
We’re spending $200 million a year on bullets alone.   That’s a lot of target practice.   We have 1,155,000 enlisted men and women and 225,000 officers.   One officer to tell every five enlisted soldier what to do.   We have 40,000 colonels alone and 870 generals.
We had a great commander in WWII, Dwight Eisenhower.   He became President and on leaving the White House in 1961, he said this: “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.   The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. ..."
Well, Ike was right.   That’s just what’s happened.

Niels Harrit, you and eight other researchers conclude in this article that it was nano-thermite that caused these buildings to collapse.

We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center.

One sample was collected by a Manhattan resident about ten minutes after the collapse of the second WTC Tower, two the next day, and a fourth about a week later.

The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

The carbon content of the red material indicates that an organic substance is present.

This would be expected for super-thermite formulations in order to produce high gas pressures upon ignition and thus make them explosive.

A new scientific article concludes that impacts from the two hijacked aircraft did not cause the collapses in 2001.
We turn our attention to 9/11 — the major attack in New York.
Apparently the two airplane-impacts did not cause the towers to collapse, according to a newly published scientific article.
Researchers found nano-thermite explosive in the rubble, that cannot have come from the planes.
They believe several tonnes of explosives were placed in the buildings in advance.
Niels Harrit, you and eight other researchers conclude in this article, that it was nano-thermite that caused these buildings to collapse. What is nano-thermite?
Niels Harrit   We found nano-thermite in the rubble.
We are not saying only nano-thermite was used.
Thermite itself dates back to 1893.
It is a mixture of aluminum and rust-powder, which react to create intense heat.
The reaction produces iron, heated to 2500 °C.
This can be used to do welding.   It can also be used to melt other iron.
Nanotechnology makes things smaller.   So in nano-thermite, this powder from 1893 is reduced to tiny particles, perfectly mixed.
When these react, the intense heat develops much more quickly.
Nano-thermite can be mixed with additives to give off intense heat, or serve as a very effective explosive.
It contains more energy than dynamite, and can be used as rocket fuel.
Danish TV2   I Googled nano-thermite, and not much has been written about it.   Is it a widely known scientific substance?   Or is it so new that other scientists are hardly aware of it?
Niels Harrit   It is a collective name for substances with high levels of energy.
If civilian researchers (like myself) are not familiar with it, it is probably because they do not do much work with explosives.
As for military scientists, you would have to ask them.
I do not know how familiar they are with nanotechnology.
Danish TV2   So you found this substance in the WTC, why do you think it caused the collapses?
Niels Harrit   Well, it's an explosive.   Why else would it be there?
Danish TV2   You believe the intense heat melted the building?s steel support structure, and caused the building to collapse like a house of cards?
Niels Harrit   I cannot say precisely, as this substance can serve both purposes.
It can explode and break things apart, and it can melt things.
Both effects were probably used, as I see it.
Molten metal pours out of the South Tower several minutes before the collapse.
This indicates the whole structure was being weakened in advance.
Then the regular explosives come into play.
The actual collapse sequence had to be perfectly timed, all the way down.
Danish TV2   What quantities are we talking about?
Niels Harrit   A lot.   There were only two planes, but three skyscrapers collapsed.
We know roughly how much dust was created.
The pictures show huge quantities, everything but the steel was pulverised.
And we know roughly how much unreacted thermite we have found.

This is the “loaded gun”, material that did not ignite for some reason.
We are talking about tonnes.   Over 10 tonnes, possibly 100 tonnes.
Danish TV2   Ten tonnes, possibly 100 tonnes, in three buildings?   And these substances are not normally found in such buildings?
Niels Harrit   No.   These materials are extremely advanced.
Danish TV2   How do you place such material in a skyscraper, on all the floors?
Niels Harrit   How you would get it in?
Danish TV2   Yes.
Niels Harrit   If I had to transport it in those quantities I would use pallets.   Get a truck and move it in on pallets.
Danish TV2   Why hasn't this been discovered earlier?
Niels Harrit   By whom?
Danish TV2   The caretakers, for example.     If you are moving 10 to 100 tonnes of nano-thermite around, and placing it on all the floors.     I am just surprised no-one noticed.
Niels Harrit   As a journalist, you should address that question to the company responsible for security at the WTC.
Danish TV2   So you are in no doubt the material was present?
Niels Harrit   You cannot fudge this kind of science.
We have found it.   Unreacted thermite.
Danish TV2   What responses has your article received around the world?
Niels Harrit   It is completely new knowledge for me.
It was only published last Friday.   So it is too early to say.
But the article may not be as groundbreaking as you think.
Hundreds of thousands of people around the world, have long known that the three buildings were demolished.

This has been crystal clear.
Our research is just the last nail in the coffin.
This is not the 'smoking gun', it is the 'loaded gun'.
Each day, thousands of people realise that the WTC was demolished.
That is something unstoppable.
Danish TV2   Why has no-one discovered earlier that there was nano-thermite in the buildings?   Almost ten years have passed.
Niels Harrit   You mean in the dust?
Danish TV2   Yes.
Niels Harrit   It was by chance that someone looked at the dust with a microscope.
They are tiny red chips.
The biggest are 1 mm in size, and can be seen with the naked eye.
But you need a microscope to see the vast majority.
It was by chance that someone discovered them two years ago.
Danish TV2   It has taken 18 months to prepare the scientific article you refer to.
Niels Harrit   It is a very comprehensive article based on thorough research.
Danish TV2   You have been working on this for several years, because it didn't make sense to you.
Niels Harrit   Yes, over two years actually.
It all started when I saw the collapse of Building 7, the third skyscraper.
It collapsed seven hours after the twin towers.
And there were only two airplanes.
When you see a 47-storey building, 186m tall, collapse in 6.5 seconds, and you are a scientist, you think “what?”.
I had to watch it again… and again.
I hit the button 10 times, and my jaw dropped lower and lower.
Firstly, I had never heard of that building before.
And there was no visible reason why it should collapse in that way, straight down, in 6.5 seconds.
I have had no rest since that day.
Danish TV2   Ever since 9/11 there has been speculation, and conspiracy theories.   What do you say to viewers who hear about your research and say, “we?ve heard it all before, there are lots of conspiracy theories”.   What would you say to convince them that this is different?
Niels Harrit   I think there is only one conspiracy theory worth mentioning, the one involving 19 hijackers.
I think viewers should ask themselves what evidence they have seen to support the official conspiracy theory.
If anyone has seen evidence, I would like to hear about it
No-one has been formally charged.   No-one is 'wanted'.
Our work should lead to demands for a proper criminal investigation of the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Because it never happened.   We are still waiting for it.
We hope our results will be used as technical evidence when that day comes.
Danish TV2   Niels Harrit, fascinating, thanks for coming in.
Niels Harrit   My pleasure
ITALIAN SAYS 9-11 SOLVED
It’s common knowledge, he reveals
CIA — Mossad behind terror attacks
By the Staff of American Free Press
Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga, who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio, has told Italy’s oldest and most widely read newspaper that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad, and that this was common knowledge among global intelligence agencies.
In what translates awkwardly into English, Cossiga told the newspaper Corriere della Sera:
“All the [intelligence services] of America and Europe… know well that the disastrous attack has been planned and realized from the Mossad, with the aid of the Zionist world in order to put under accusation the Arabic countries and in order to induce the western powers to take part … in Iraq [and] Afghanistan.”
Cossiga was elected president of the Italian Senate in July 1983 before winning a landslide election to become president of the country in 1985, and he remained until 1992.
Cossiga’s tendency to be outspoken upset the Italian political establishment, and he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio.
This was a rogue intelligence network under NATO auspices that carried out bombings across Europe in the 1960s, 1970s and ’80s.
Gladio’s specialty was to carry out what they termed 'false flag' operations — terror attacks that were blamed on their domestic and geopolitical opposition.
In March 2001, Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:
“You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game.
The reason was quite simple: to force … the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security.”
Cossiga first expressed his doubts about 9-11 in 2001, and is quoted by 9-11 researcher Webster Tarpley saying:
“The mastermind of the attack must have been a sophisticated mind, provided with ample means not only to recruit fanatic kamikazes, but also highly specialized personnel.
I add one thing: it could not be accomplished without infiltrations in the radar and flight security personnel.”
Coming from a widely respected former head of state, Cossiga’s assertion that the 9-11 attacks were an inside job and that this is common knowledge among global intelligence agencies is illuminating.
It is one more eye-opening confirmation that has not been mentioned by America’s propaganda machine in print or on TV.
Nevertheless, because of his experience and status in the world, Cossiga cannot be discounted as a crackpot.

US to Develop New Hydrogen Bomb
by Ralph Vartabedian
The Energy Department will announce today a contract to develop the nation's first new hydrogen bomb in two decades, involving a collaboration between three national weapons laboratories, The Times has learned.
The new bomb will include design features from all three labs, though Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Bay Area appears to have taken the lead position in the project. The Los Alamos and Sandia labs in New Mexico will also be part of the project.

Norway says Russia has increased military flights in the Arctic
The UK's Royal Air Force has launched fighter jets to intercept eight Russian military planes flying in airspace patrolled by Nato, UK officials say.
Four RAF F3 Tornado aircraft were scrambled in response to the Russian action, the UK's defence ministry said.
The Russian planes - said to be long-range bombers - had earlier been followed by Norwegian F16 jets.
Russia recently revived a Cold War-era practice of flying bombers on long-range patrols.
A Norwegian officer, Lt Col John Inge Oegland, told the BBC the Russian Tupolev Tu-95 Bear bombers flew in international airspace from the Barents Sea to the Atlantic, before turning back.
Two Norwegian F-16s shadowed them on Thursday morning and another two went up later, he said.
There have been several similar incidents in recent months, Lt-Col Oegland added.
"Norway is following the increased Russian activity in the far north with interest," he told the BBC News website.
He said the Russian flights were not causing alarm in Norway.   "Our systems are adequate," he said, when asked whether Norway was bolstering its security in the area.
Over time I was increasingly shocked by the speed and ease with which many intelligent and seemingly competent members of the CFR [ Council on Foreign Relations ] appeared to eagerly justify policies and actions that supported growing corruption.
The regularity with which many CFR members would protect insiders from accountability regarding another appalling fraud surprised even me.
Many of them seemed delighted with the advantages of being an insider while being entirely indifferent to the extraordinary cost to all citizens of having our lives, health and resources drained to increase insider wealth in a manner that violated the most basic principles of fiduciary obligation and respect for the law.
In short, the CFR was operating in a win-lose economic paradigm that centralized economic and political power.
I was trying to find a way for us to shift to a win-win economic paradigm that was — by its nature — decentralizing.

The reader can appreciate why Wall Street would welcome someone as accommodating as Gorelick at Fannie Mae.
This was a period when the profits rolled in from engineering the most spectacular growth in mortgage debt in U.S. history.
As one real estate broker said, “They have turned our homes into ATM machines.”
Fannie Mae has been a leading player in centralizing control of the mortgage markets into Washington D.C. and Wall Street.
And that means as people were rounded up and shipped to prison as part of Operation Safe Home, Fannie was right behind to finance the gentrification of neighborhoods.
And that is before we ask questions about the extent to which the estimated annual financial flows of $500 billion–$1 trillion money laundering through the U.S. financial system or money missing from the US government are reinvested into Fannie Mae securities.

James Forrestal
James Forrestal’s oil portrait always hung prominently in one of the private Dillon Read dining rooms for the eleven years that I worked at the firm. Forrestal, a highly regarded Dillon partner and President of the firm, had gone to Washington, D.C. in 1940 to lead the Navy during WWII and then played a critical role in creating the National Security Act of 1947.

He then became Secretary of War (later termed Secretary of Defense) in September 1947 and served until March 28, 1949.

Given the central banking-warfare investment model that rules our planet, it was appropriate that Dillon
partners at various times lead both the Treasury Department and the Defense Department.

Shortly after resigning from government, Forrestal died falling out of a window of the Bethesda Naval Hospital outside of Washington, D.C. on May 22, 1949.

There is some controversy around the official explanation of his death — ruled a suicide.

Some insist he had a nervous breakdown. Some say that he was opposed to the creation of the state of Israel.

Others say that he argued for transparency and accountability in government, and against the provisions instituted at this time to create a secrete “black budget.”

He lost and was pretty upset about it — and the loss was a violent one.

Since the professional killers who operate inside the Washington beltway have numerous techniques to get perfectly sane people to kill themselves, I am not sure it makes a big difference.

Approximately a month later, the CIA Act of 1949 was passed.

The Act created the CIA and endowed it with the statutory authority that became one of the chief components of financing the “black” budget — the power to claw monies from other agencies for the benefit of secretly funding the intelligence communities and their corporate contractors.

This was to turn out to be a devastating development for the forces of transparency, without which there can be no rule of law, free markets or democracy.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed Forrestal as an administrative assistant on June 22, 1940, then nominated him as Undersecretary of the Navy six weeks later. In the latter post, Forrestal would prove to be very effective at mobilizing industrial production for the war effort.
He became Secretary of the Navy on May 19, 1944, following the death of his immediate supervisor Frank Knox from a heart attack. Forrestal then led the Navy through the closing year of the war and the demobilization that followed.   What might have been his greatest legacy as Navy Secretary was an attempt that came to nought.   He, along with Secretary of War Henry Stimson and Under Secretary of State Joseph Grew, in the early months of 1945, strongly advocated a softer policy toward Japan that would permit a negotiated face-saving surrender.   His primary concern was "the menace of Russian Communism and its attraction for decimated, destabilized societies in Europe and Asia", and, therefore, keeping the Soviet Union out of the war with Japan.   Had his advice been followed, Japan might well have surrendered before August 1945, precluding the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.   So strongly did he feel about this matter that he cultivated negotiation attempts that bordered closely on insubordination toward the President.
Forrestal opposed the unification of the services, but even so helped develop the National Security Act of 1947 that created the National Military Establishment (the Department of Defense was not created as such until August 1949), and with the former Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson retiring to private life, Forrestal was the next choice.
His 18 months at Defense came at an exceptionally difficult time for the U.S. military establishment:   Communist governments came to power in Czechoslovakia and China; West Berlin was blockaded, necessitating the Berlin Airlift to keep it going; the war between the Arab states and Israel after the establishment of Israel in Palestine; and negotiations were going on for the formation of NATO.   His reign was also hampered by intense interservice rivalries.
In addition, President Harry Truman constrained military budgets billions of dollars below what the services were requesting, putting Forrestal in the middle of the tug-of-war.   Forrestal was also becoming more and more worried about the Soviet threat.   Internationally, the takeover by the Communists of Eastern Europe, their threats to the governments of Greece, Italy, and France, their impending takeover of China, and the invasion of South Korea by North Korea would demonstrate the legitimacy of his concerns on the international front as well.

What Briody does not mention is allegations regarding Brown & Root's involvement in narcotics trafficking. Former LAPD narcotics investigator Mike Ruppert once described his break up with fiance Teddy — an agent dealing narcotics and weapons for the CIA while working with Brown & Root, as follows:
“Arriving in New Orleans in early July, 1977 I found her living in an apartment across the river in Gretna. Equipped with scrambler phones, night vision devices and working from sealed communiqués delivered by naval and air force personnel from nearby Belle Chasse Naval Air Station, Teddy was involved in something truly ugly.
She was arranging for large quantities of weapons to be loaded onto ships leaving for Iran.
At the same time she was working with Mafia associates of New Orleans Mafia boss Carlos Marcello to coordinate the movement of service boats that were bringing large quantities of heroin into the city.
The boats arrived at Marcello controlled docks, unmolested by even the New Orleans police she introduced me to, along with divers, military men, former Green Berets and CIA personnel.
“The service boats were retrieving the heroin from oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, oil rigs in international waters, oil rigs built and serviced by Brown and Root.
The guns that Teddy monitored, apparently Vietnam era surplus AK 47s and M16s, were being loaded onto ships also owned or leased by Brown and Root.
And more than once during the eight days I spent in New Orleans I met and ate at restaurants with Brown and Root employees who were boarding those ships and leaving for Iran within days.
Once, while leaving a bar and apparently having asked the wrong question, I was shot at in an attempt to scare me off.”

The Clinton Administration took the groundwork laid by Nixon, Reagan and Bush and embraced and blossomed the expansion and promotion of federal support for police, enforcement and the War on Drugs with a passion that was hard to understand unless and until you realized that the American financial system was deeply dependent on attracting an estimated $500 billion-$1 trillion of annual money laundering.
Globalizing corporations and deepening deficits and housing bubbles required attracting vast amounts of capital.
Attracting capital also required making the world safe for the reinvestment of the profits of organized crime and the war machine.
Without growing organized crime and military activities through government budgets and contracts, the economy would stop centralizing.
The Clinton Administration was to govern a doubling of the federal prison population.

9/11
By all accounts, the unprecedented events of September 11th, 2001 changed the way our country functions, and in turn, the world.
It is therefore critical that conscientious Americans, as well as people around the globe, understand these events in detail.
Unfortunately the official reports, including The 9/11 Commission Report and the NIST WTC Report, written by those working under the direction of the Bush Administration, have been proven to be elaborate cover-ups.
Film: 9/11 Revisited
September 11th Revisited is perhaps the most riveting film ever made about the destruction of the World Trade Center.
This is a powerful documentary which features eyewitness accounts and archived news footage that was shot on September 11, 2001 but never replayed on television.
Featuring interviews with eyewitnesses & firefighters, along with expert analysis by Professor Steven E. Jones, Professor David Ray Griffin, MIT Engineer Jeffrey King, and Professor James H. Fetzer.
This film provides stunning evidence that explosives were used in the complete demolition of the WTC Twin Towers and WTC Building 7.

US destroyed Fallujah as it tries to destroy the rest of Iraq

Justice O'Connor's decision in Bush v. Gore led to the current Bush administration's execution of war crimes and atrocities in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places in the Middle East that are as egregious as those committed by the Third Reich and other evil governments in human history.
The lesson is clear.
Those people who may be honorable and distinguished in their chosen profession should always make decisions based upon good rather than evil no matter where their nominal allegiances may rest.
Justice O'Connor was quoted to have said something to the affect that she abhorred the thought of Bush losing the 2000 election to Gore.
She was known to have wanted to retire after the 2000 election for same reason she is now retiring.
She wanted to spend more time with her sick husband.
Unfortunately, she tarnished her distinguished career with the deciding vote in Bush v. Gore by going along with the partisan majority of the Court to interfere with a democratic election that she and the majority feared would be lost in an honest recount.
She dishonored herself and the Supreme Court by succumbing to party allegiances and not The Constitution to which she swore to uphold.
And the constitutional argument she and the majority used to justify their decision was the Equal Protection Clause.
The Equal Protection Clause was the ultimate basis for the decision, but the majority essentially admitted (what was obvious in any event) that it was not basing its conclusion on any general view of what equal protection requires.
The decision in Bush v Gore was not dictated by the law in any sense—either the law found through research, or the law as reflected in the kind of intuitive sense that comes from immersion in the legal culture.
The Equal Protection clause is generally used in matters concerning civil rights.
The majority ignored their basic conservative views supporting federalism and states' rights in order to justify their decision.
History will haunt these justices down for their utter lack of justice and the hypocrisy associated with this decision.

There are those who contend that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is all about Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.   This is absolute nonsense.
In truth, the history of the conflict is not over occupation, and never has been:  it is over the fundamental right of Israel to exist.
The greatest threat to Israel's right to exist, with the prospect of devastating violence, now comes from Iran.
For too long, leaders of both political parties in the United States have not done nearly enough to confront the Russians and the Chinese, who have supplied Iran as it has plowed ahead with its nuclear and missile technology....
In the words of Isaiah, we will make ourselves to Israel 'as hiding places from the winds and shelters from the tempests; as rivers of water in dry places; as shadows of a great rock in a weary land.'
