Medvedev backs independence for Abkhazia and South Ossetia
August 26, 2008, 15:02
|
|
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has declared that Russia will recognise the independence of Georgia’s breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
He made the announcement in Sochi following a unanimous vote for the republics’ independence by both houses of the Russian Parliament in Moscow on Monday.
Medvedev said in the announcement:
“We are all well aware of South Ossetia’s tragedy.
The night shelling of Tskhinvali by the Georgian troops led to the deaths of thousands of civilians.
Russian peacekeepers have died, but they did everything they could to protect the civilian population,"
“The Georgian government — breaking UN regulations and its obligations to the international community, running counter to common sense — started a military conflict which claimed many civilians’ lives.
Tbilisi must have planned to carry out a ‘blitzkrieg’ and chose the most inhumane way to annex South Ossetia — by destroying its whole population.”
Medvedev believes it can now be clearly seen that a peaceful resolution of the conflict was not in Tbilisi’s plans.
|
“The Georgian leadership was getting ready for war step by step.
And on the night of August 8, 2008, Tbilisi made its choice.
Saakashvili chose genocide as a means to solve his political tasks.
Doing this, he destroyed with his own hands all hopes for the peaceful living of South Ossetians, Abkhazians and Georgians as part of one state.”
“We understand that after what had happened in Tskhinvali, and what was planned to be done in Abkhazia, these people have a right to resolve their fates themselves.
Presidents of both republics — basing their policies on the results of referendums and the decisions of the republics’ parliaments — turned to Russia, asking us to recognise the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.”
“The Federation Council and the State Duma of the Russian Federation voted in favour of these applications.”
“We respect the free will of the South Ossetian and Abkhazian people, and basing our actions on international regulations and documents, I have signed an order to recognise the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation. Russia is also calling on other states to follow suit.”
|
Hard road to independence
South Ossetia, which borders Russia in the south Caucasus, and Abkhazia on the Black Sea, had previously attempted to break away from Georgia following referendums which were overwhelmingly in favour of independence.
The results were ignored by Tbilisi, which claimed the ethnic Georgians forced to flee the regions were not consulted.
The recent conflict in South Ossetia has added further urgency to the demands for self-determination.
The roots of the current discord can be traced back to the divide and conquer policies of Joseph Stalin — himself half Georgian, half Ossetian.
Before the 1917 revolution, the ethnic groups of the Caucasus all lived as separate subjects of the Russian empire.
However, with the Bolsheviks came the redrawing of the map, with both South Ossetia and Abkhazia becoming parts of Georgia.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, the then Georgian leader Zviad Gamsakhurdia advocated a nationalist "Georgia for the Georgians" policy, re-opening old wounds.
Two military conflicts followed, leaving thousands dead and forcing many more to flee the conflict zones.
The ceasefire in the early 1990s brought de-facto independence to both regions with the shaky truce maintained by peacekeeping forces of mainly Russian troops.
Since becoming president in 2004, Mikhail Saakashvili has pledged to bring his country closer to the West, which has also motivated his drive to end the territorial disputes.
|
Ossetians and Georgians have lived side by side for centuries.
The two groups share Soviet history and the Orthodox Christian religion and intermarriage is common.
But the ties that once bound their cultures have been severely damaged in the trauma of the recent fighting. Kosovo's self-declared independence in February, too, has boosted these regions' ambitions.
Most Abkhazians and South Ossetians carry Russian passports and the only valid currency is the Russian rouble.
In addition, both self-declared republics have presidents, flags and national anthems.

Medvedev exclusive: We’re not afraid of Cold War
Aug 26, 2008 20:58:09 (GMT + 4)
|
|
With the Russian parliament backing the independence of the breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, President Dmitry Medvedev gives his views on the issue in an exclusive interview with RT.
RT: Immediately after Kosovo’s independence was recognised, Moscow said this could become a precedent for South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Today, you made a decision to support these republics’ independence.
Why did Russia do it?
Does this square with international law?
|
Medvedev: I'll start with your second question.
This is fully in line with international law.
When the case of Kosovo arose, my colleagues said this was a special case, or, as experts in international affairs say, casus sui generis.
Well, each case of such recognition is a special case.
The situation in Kosovo was special, and the situation in South Ossetia and Abkhazia is special as well.
In our situation, it is quite obvious that we made this decision in order to prevent genocide and annihilation of these peoples, and to help them to come to their feet.
These unrecognised republics have been struggling for their independence for seventeen years now.
Despite all attempts by the international community, no progress was made during this time.
Until just recently, we tried to help restore the state unite of Georgia.
|
However, it didn’t work.
The decision to launch an aggression buried all hopes of achieving an agreement.
Thus, under current circumstances, the only way to preserve these peoples is to recognise them as subjects of international law, to recognize their state independence.
That is why our decision is fully in line with international law, the UN Charter, Helsinki declarations and other international documents.
RT: Is Russia prepared for a long and tough confrontation with leading world powers that the decision it made today may lead to?
And, in general, aren’t we afraid of the prospect to enter another Cold War?
Medvedev: We are not afraid of anything, the prospect of another Cold War included.
Of course, we don't want that.
In this situation, everything depends on the stand of our partners in the world community, our partners in the West.
If they want to preserve good relations with Russia, they will understand the reason for making such a decision, and the situation will be calm.
But if they choose a confrontational scenario, well, we‘ve been through all kinds of situations, and we’ll survive.
RT: You have signed the six-point agreement.
One of the points says Russia should pull its troops out of Georgia.
Nevertheless, Russia is still being accused of not meeting this obligation.
Is this true?
Are there Russian troops left in Georgia?
Medvedev: That's not true.
Russia has fully met its obligations stemming from the six principles of the so-called Medvedev-Sarkozi agreement.
|
Our troops have been withdrawn from Georgia, except for the so-called security corridor.
RT: The presidential campaign is underway in the US.
Both candidates have spoken more than once on Russia’s actions in Georgia.
Don’t you think this situation is being used as an instrument for the political struggle inside the US?
Medvedev: Well, as far as I know, usually during the elections in the United States of America, voters are quite indifferent to what is happening abroad.
But if one of the candidates managed to use this question, well, godspeed him.
The main thing is that it should not lead to international tensions.
I have no doubt that both candidates will try to spin this situation for his purposes.
But such are the rules of the election campaign.

History:
The Ossetian people of presently North and South Ossetia are a combined nation-people descendants of the Alans, a Sarmatian tribe. Tualläg in the south became what is now South Ossetia.
This area was also at times part of a principality known as Samachablo that owed allegiance to a Georgian entity.
South Ossetia is part of a larger Ossetia region that became part of Russia in 1784 in an agreement with the Ottoman Empire. The Ossetia regions were at that time part of the Ottoman Empire
Old Georgia was annexed by the Russia Empire in 1801. Neither of the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia were part of old Georgia when Georgia was merged into Russia.
Abkhazia — not connected to North or South Ossetia — has always been an independent people-nation. Abkhazia was incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1910.
Vladimir Lenin split the Russian empire into 15 Republics. South Ossetia was made an autonomous region within the newly made Georgia republic in 1922. Abkhazia remained a republic in its own right.
The Georgian Soviet government created by Soviet Russia in 1921 recognized South Ossetia as separate from the territory of old Georgia creating the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast in April 1922.
The Menshevik Georgian government believed the South Ossetians assisted with the Bolshevik takeover.
Conflict because of this supposed assistance, and South Ossetia's unwillingness to be a part of Georgia caused much death and injury in South Ossetia.
Figures of 5,000 South Ossetian people are stated as killed with more than 13,000 South Ossetians dying from hunger and epidemics.
Abkhazia, incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1910, remained a republic in its own right within the Russian Empire until Stalin incorporated it into the Georgian republic in 1931. In this incorporation Abkhazia remained legally as an autonomous republic.
Abkhazia was subjected to brutal acts of ethnic cleansing and many Georgians were forcibly resettled into this small autonomous republic.
Stalin supported Lavrenty Beria, the leader of the Georgian republic, in this Georgian resettlement.
Secessionist desire remained in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia with both South Ossetia and Abkhazia fighting wars of independence with Georgia in the early 1990's — both small countries establishing de facto sovereignty.
Neither have recognized being part of the new Georgia when the Georgian grouping in Tblisi setting up its own independence at that time from the dissolving Soviet Union.
The government of this new Georgia, without asking, incorporated South Ossetia and Abkhazia and a third region to the south, the Ajarian Autonomous Republic, into the independent new territory now called Georgia.
The new territory called Georgia has become accepted as such by the West but the new Georgia has never been accepted as incorporating South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia nor has the incorporation been accepted by the people of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The political realities of “democratic” Georgia
By Tom Eley18 August 2008
One of the constant themes in the US government and media presentation of the conflict in the Caucasus is the depiction of Georgia as a bastion of democracy.
The Bush administration has increasingly invoked the terminology of the Cold War by referring to “democratic Georgia” as a symbol of the “free world” and its struggle against authoritarian Russia.
|
Reality of political life in Georgia far different than media image
The reality of political life in Georgia is far different than the media image.
Only last November, in the midst of mounting protests against his regime, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili employed dictatorial methods against his opponents.
On November 2, opposition demonstrations began in Tbilisi, demanding democratic reforms and the ouster of Saakashvili.
These protests, while organized by billionaire media tycoon Badri Patarkatsishvili, gave vent to grievances against government repression and the desperate living conditions of the population.
They attracted tens of thousands to the streets of Georgia’s capital city.
The demonstrations continued until November 7, when the state police, acting on orders from Saakashvili, used tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons and truncheons to disperse the protesters.
More than 600 required medical attention after the crackdown.
On the same day, Special Forces raided Patarkatsishvili’s broadcasting corporation Imeldi, beating journalists and disabling equipment.
Saakashvili declared a state of emergency, suspending democratic rights such as freedom of expression and assembly.
Independent broadcasting was halted even before the state of emergency was declared, and only the state-controlled television station was allowed to broadcast for a period of fifteen days.
Imeldi was taken off the air indefinitely.
During the crackdown, Saakashivli called for snap elections to be held less than two months later, on January 5.
The elections, held under conditions of political intimidation and repression, placed the opposition at an enormous disadvantage.
|
All media were under the de facto control of Saakashivli.
In addition, two opposition leaders, Konstantin Gamsakhurdia and Shalva Natelashvili, were declared “wanted for treason.” The government accused them of conspiring with Russia to overthrow the government.
Patarkatsishvili, who likewise faced a government investigation for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government, began his campaign from Israel.
He withdrew from the elections after the government released a recording of him attempting to bribe a police officer.
Patarkatsishvili died suddenly last February in London at the age of 52.
Authorities attributed the death to a massive heart attack, but Patarkatsishvili believed the Georgian authorities were targeting him for assassination.
The early elections eliminated two other serious rivals for the presidency—former defense minister Irakli Okruashvili and lawyer Tinatin Khidasheli—both of whom were just shy of 35 years of age, the minimum, at the time of the vote.
Okruashvili fled the country shortly after the crackdown in what ABC News called “mysterious circumstances.”
He had accused Saakashvili of corruption, but after being placed under arrest he was apparently forced to retract the allegations.
Allegations Saakashvili used state money, blackmail and vote-buying
During the campaign, election observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe reported that the credibility of the election had been placed in doubt by allegations that Saakashvili had used state money, blackmail and vote-buying.
With rivals under arrest, under police investigation, in exile or legally barred from running for office, it is little surprise that Saakashvili won reelection.
After his victory, the opposition claimed that the vote had been manipulated.
His vote total surpassed by 20 percent that which had been projected by an opinion poll released one week earlier.
The Saakashvili regime faced international criticism from foreign capitals and human rights organizations for its assumption of dictatorial powers.
|
Though the level of repression Saakashvili employed exceeded the measures that had been taken by his predecessor, Eduard Shevardnadze, against the so-called “Rose Revolution” that brought Saakashvili to power in early 2004, criticism from the United States was much more muted.
“Things got out of control”
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew J. Bryza, a close ally and personal friend of the US-educated Saakashvili, acknowledged that the State Department was “hearing more and more reports that people were grabbed from stores or that passers-by were beaten,” but concluded merely that “Things got out of control.”
NATO head Jaap de Hoop Scheffer responded with little more than a wrist slap against the Georgian government, which was seeking NATO membership.
He limited himself to the observation that “the imposition of emergency rule and the closure of media outlets” were not in line with “Euro-Atlantic values.”
The US State Department, in its 2008 “Country Reports in Human Rights,” listed the following in relation to the Georgian government: “at least one reported death due to excessive use of force by law enforcement officers, cases of torture and mistreatment of detainees, abuse of prisoners, excessive use of force to disperse demonstrations, poor conditions in prisons and pretrial detention facilities, impunity of police officers, continued overuse of pretrial detention for less serious offenses, lack of access for average citizens to defense attorneys, lack of due process in some cases, and reports of government pressure on the judiciary.”
The report went on to state: “Respect for freedom of speech, the press, assembly and political participation worsened, especially during the fall crisis.
Other problems included reports of government pressure on the judiciary and the media, restrictions on freedom of assembly and freedom of speech, and corruption among senior-level officials.
Despite government efforts, trafficking-in-persons continued to occur.”
“Color revolutions” subsidized by US government and private foundations
The so-called “color revolutions” in Georgia (2003) and Ukraine (2004-2005) did not represent the spontaneous will of the masses.
They were political coups orchestrated from Washington, with the aide of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) subsidized by the US government and private foundations.
Chief among the NGOs involved in Georgia’s “Rose Revolution” was the Liberty Institute, which was funded by the United States Agency for International Development’s Eurasia Foundation as well as billionaire financier George Soros’s Open Society Institute.
|
In fact, the “excesses” of Saakashvili in putting down peaceful protests were not mere aberrations.
The Liberty Institute’s co-founder, Giga Bokeria, took a Soros Foundation-funded tour of Serbia in February 2002 to learn how the Otpor, or “Resistance,” student opposition had ousted Slobodan Milosevic following a disputed election in the autumn of 2000.
Another US government outfit involved in the ouster of Shevardnadze was the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a center of international intrigue and subversion set up under the Reagan administration and relying heavily on the services of the AFL-CIO trade union bureaucracy.
The Democratic Party wing of the NED, known as the National Democratic Institute, in the words of Wall Street Journal columnist George Melloan, “helped introduce Mr. Saakashvili to the methods insurgents in Serbia used to depose dictator Slobodan Milosevic.”
Saakashvili’s reelection last January was based politically on an appeal to rabid Georgian nationalism.
The central plank of his campaign was a pledge to restore Tbilisi’s authority over the pro-Russian breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
They had established de facto independence as a result of bloody fighting with Georgian government forces that followed the revocation in March 1991 of the autonomy guaranteed them under the Soviet constitution.
“A distinctly undemocratic one-party state”
Within months of his reelection, Saaskashvili was assuming unprecedented powers in what the Manila Times called “a distinctly undemocratic one-party state.”
Saakashvili is the representative of one faction of the Georgian ruling elite. Including in its ranks former officials of the old Stalinist regime, the new financial oligarchy emerged from the breakup of the Soviet Union, amassing its wealth by plundering the formerly nationalized economy.
In contrast to Western tributes to the economic growth and modernization of Georgia under Saakashvili, his government oversees a miserably poor and highly polarized society.
Formerly one of the wealthiest Soviet republics, in 2007 Georgia ranked 108th in the world in per capita gross domestic product (GDP), below countries like Bhutan, Ecuador and Guatemala.
Its GDP ranks 114th in the world, below that of Equatorial Guinea.
If it were a US state, Georgia’s GDP would rank at the bottom, equaling about one-third of Vermont’s.
|
The official unemployment rate in Georgia stands at nearly 13 percent.
More than one half of the population lives below the official poverty level.
Over one quarter lives on less than $2 per day.
Last year the average monthly pension was $30.
But Saakashvili’s pro-Western, “free market” economic policies have fostered the growth of a small but growing wealthy elite.
Georgia earned the World Bank’s 2008 designation as “the number one economic reformer in the world” because it improved in one year from 112th to 18th in creating what is euphemistically called “a friendly business environment.”
What this means in practice is the scrapping of all regulations and encumbrances limiting the exploitation of the working class and the accumulation of personal wealth by a rapacious financial elite.
In 2004, Saakashvili’s first year in power, his government abolished the progressive income tax and replaced it with a 12 percent flat tax.

The United States has warned Russia to stop what it calls Moscow's "dangerous game" of using its military to assert its power
"Russia will pay a price," Rice said on Monday before flying to Brussels for the talks.
"We are going to send the message that we are not going to allow Russia to draw a new line at those states that are not yet integrated into the transatlantic structures like Georgia and Ukraine.
"We are determined to deny them their strategic objective."

Children made innocent victims of cruel war
August 19, 2008, 9:23

|
Georgian aggression has claimed around 2,000 South Ossetian lives — but there is something even more horrifying hidden in this statisitic as estimates suggest around 700 children have been killed by Georgians.
About 800 students used to study in school number 6.
The windows are expected to be repaired in time for the new school year.
However, education officials believe there likely to be many empty desks on the first day of school.
Local resident Georgy Dzhusov:
"According to my estimates around 700 children have been killed in South Ossetia during this war.
Saakashvili is a monster!
I want to address him and say I want to strangle him with my bare hands for killing the young ones!"
Zaur lost his son and two grandsons on the first day of war.
Their car was on its way out of Tskhinvali, when it was shot at by what a witness says was a Georgian tank.
Two teenagers and their father were burnt alive.
Zaur:
How could they shoot at children?
They are monsters!"
Zaur believes he has no reason to live any more.
His grandchildren were under 15 years old and he thinks they were too young to know what genocide is.
Georgian soldiers high on drugs
Anatoly Boronkevich, Head of the Security Council in South Ossetia:
"We have evidence that Georgians were high on drugs during the war.
That might explain why they were killing children senselessly."
However, despite the death and destruction there are children who have returned and are now once again playing on the streets of Tskhinvali.
The hope of the older generation now lies in their hands.

So the South Ossetia war was really all about Poland, the Czechs and now Ukraine bordering Western Russia
And Georgia joining NATO (To quote Sara Flounders from her article mid-page below)
NATO — a formation of industrialized imperialist countries prospering from generations of colonial plunder using military might, nuclear blackmail, economic sabotage, espionage and terror
Having NATO join Georgia and vice versa is another step, but a major accomplishment, towards the dead bodies of millions perhaps billions
Some of the leaders of Western countries had retained a type of sanity
They did not want to sign on to US imperialism: missile systems, having NATO breach all argument against war, have NATO now actually raise not merely the possibility but likelihood of nuclear conflict
What to do?
Push them!
Push these recalcitrant sane politicians, of course!
Use fear to make them have missiles on the territory that will, if there is nuclear war, result in their populations being annihilated, fear to make them agree to anything — NATO memberships on Russia’s border, damned the consequences — of course!
One more 9/11 accomplished — South Ossetia massacres instigated by Saakashvili, willing participant of the Cheney controlled US
Fear of a new Soviet?
Easy!
In-the-box politicians!
Unwanted agreements!
So easy this 9/11 caper it has become boring!
Weak brainwashed leaders see nothing once they get a telephone call and the devils on airplanes come to visit
Fear does what nothing else can do
Why aren't we afraid people?
Why are you not afraid?
You think the three million service people killed in World War I were afraid?
Not until it became their moment to die
Three million service people killed, instigated by the globalist elite who control events and wanted a sizable male depopulation among other goals
You think the Jewish people who allowed themselves to be shipped to gas camps were afraid?
Perhaps, but the government would not kill them
The government would not kill this many of us, they said
These foolish people never would recognize it was a globalist elite of bankers who had set up Hitler and were funding all sides until as many as possible would be killed
You think you will be afraid when the missiles come?
Yes, when you suddenly know! It is going to happen!
Just as likely you and your children will not know until the flash takes you
Then you will be dead
Is this what you really want for those whom you have cherished?
You can join with the West’s small band of resisters to the evil that has befallen
You can do something about the intensifying wickedness
You can daily send letters to your newspapers
You can daily call your radio outlets — those stations and programs that are most in league with death
You can daily call your television outlets — those stations and programs that are most in league with death
You can write any and all politicians asking for sanity to be restored
Local and national politicians will respond to fear; they will respond to you if they hear enough of you
You, in these waning moments of your family’s existence, vote for no individual who belongs to the two main political putrescence
ANYONE BUT DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS
You can do all of this until you have freed the world of its human deadly killers
If your succeed!
Ah! If you succeed!
Then you yourself will not merely be alive
You will be free
And your children and cherished ones will also be free
And alive

Globalist elite backed Obama seeks missile defense too
The US plans to deploy a radar in the Czech Republic and 10 interceptor missiles in northern Poland as part of a US-controlled missile shield for Europe and North America, has been officially sold under the ludicrous argument that it is against possible attacks from "rogue states," including Iran.
Last Spring then Russian President Vladimir Putin exposed the shallowness of the US propaganda line by offering a startled President Bush that Russia would offer the US use of Russian leased radar facilities in Azerbaijan on the Iran border to far better monitor Iran missile launches.
The Bush Administration simply ignored the offer, exposing that their real target is Russia not "rogue states like Iran."
Russia rightly views deployment of the US missile shield as a threat to its national security.
...The deal would further divide European countries into what Barack Obama’s foreign policy adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski calls openly, US "vassals" and those pursuing more independent policies.
Any illusions that a Democratic Obama Presidency would mean a rollback of such provocative NATO and US military moves of recent years should be dismissed as dangerous wishful thinking.
Obama’s foreign policy team in addition to father Zbigniew Brzezinski, includes Brzezinski’s son, Ian Brzezinski, current US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Affairs.
Ian Brzezinski is a devout backer of US missile defense policy, as well as Kosovo independence and NATO expansion into Ukraine and Georgia.

Don't Forget Kosovo and the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia in The Hague
The secrets of the crushing of Yugoslavia are emerging, telling us more about how the modern world is policed.
The former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia in The Hague, Carla Del Ponte, this year published her memoir, The Hunt: Me and War Criminals.
Largely ignored in Britain, the book reveals unpalatable truths about the West's intervention in Kosovo, which has echoes in the Caucasus.
The tribunal was set up and bankrolled principally by the United States.
Del Ponte's role was to investigate the crimes committed as Yugoslavia was dismembered in the 1990s.
...With the NATO bombing over, international teams descended upon Kosovo to exhume the "holocaust."
The FBI failed to find a single mass grave and went home.
The Spanish forensic team did the same, its leader angrily denouncing "a semantic pirouette by the war propaganda machines."
A year later, Del Ponte's tribunal announced the final count of the dead in Kosovo: 2,788.
This included combatants on both sides and Serbs and Roma murdered by the KLA.
There was no genocide in Kosovo.
The "holocaust" was a lie.
The NATO attack had been fraudulent.
That was not all, says Del Ponte in her book.
The KLA kidnapped hundreds of Serbs and transported them to Albania, where their kidneys and other body parts were removed; these were then sold for transplant in other countries.
She also says there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the Kosovar Albanians for war crimes, but the investigation "was nipped in the bud" so that the tribunal's focus would be on "crimes committed by Serbia."
She says the Hague judges were terrified of the Kosovar Albanians — the very people in whose name NATO had attacked Serbia.

Belarus
March 25, 2006
The recent elections in Belarus have been condemned by the U.S. and the European Union (EU).
Both sides state they will impose sanctions and travel restrictions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
Sound familiar?
It should because this is yet another hypocritical action taken by the U.S. in its quest to democratize the world.
Unfortunately, the EU came on board with the U.S. in this case.
I thought the Europeans would have had more dignity and not mimicked Uncle Sam.
There are a few puzzling aspects to this case.
Belarus has not had many internal problems, yet those who lost the election are being branded as "freedom fighters" in their country.
According to Al-Jazeera News of March 23, 2006:
Despite his 12 years of Soviet-style rule that has made him a pariah in the West, Lukashenko is genuinely popular among the 10 million Belarussians for having ensured relative political and economic stability.
It seems that the "groundswell" of political opposition in Belarus was concocted by the U.S.
A couple of hundred demonstrators assembled in Minsk’s central square.
After five days, Belarus security moved them.
The U.S. was outraged and condemned the actions of the security forces.
However, they are no different from that of U.S. police in clearing out demonstrators in the U.S.
Most American demonstrators would not be allowed to protest for five days before being rounded up and taken to the clink.
Until a week or two before the elections, virtually nobody was talking of Belarus.
Then, allegations that there would not be fair elections came forward, which created an atmosphere of unfair actions prior to the actual vote.
This is a standard tactic by the U.S. in its psychological warfare campaign.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Larov:
Long before the elections, the OSCE mission led by the Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) had declared that the elections would be illegitimate and it was pretty biased in its commentaries on their progress and results — let’s be frank — thus playing an instigating role."
Normally, countries undergoing a good economy and stability are not the targets of massive demonstrations.
Belarus is no exception.
Yes, there was some opposition, as there is in every country in the world.
But, this was hardly a groundswell of dissident ideas with a strong following.
US newly found interest — main land transit route for Russian oil and gas
Now, let’s look at a map and we may see the reason for the U.S. taking such a newly-found interest in the democratic institutions of Belarus.
The country is the main land transit route for Russian oil and gas to western Europe and it is surrounded by nations that have succumbed to U.S. desires, such as Poland and the Ukraine.
It is the last country bordering Russia that is still independent of U.S. troops and stooges.
Once a government in Belarus comes to power that favors U.S. tactics, and is bought out, the country of Russia will be surrounded by nations once a part of the Soviet Union that have changed sides.
Belarus is the last outpost of an independent nation on Russia’s borders.
We all know of the U.S. quick-draw tactics of using military options to acquire its desires.
Few, however, are as knowledgeable about the political tactics used to put in power U.S. stooges.
In its stated quest to export democracy, the U.S. uses many non-democratic means and when the coup is accomplished, states that democracy works.
Iraq elections — largest political party in Iraq, the Ba’ath Socialists, not allowed to run
Look at Iraq.
The U.S. is hailing it as a great emerging democracy.
However, in the Iraqi elections, the ballot was so difficult to understand that a master of statistics would have had trouble knowing the players.
Candidate names were not on the ballots.
And, the largest political party in Iraq, the Ba’ath Socialists, were not allowed to run.
Bosnia and Serbia — when the "right" side eventually won U.S. accepted results
In Bosnia in 1995, two elections were negated and Madeleine Albright admitted that "the wrong side won."
When the "right" side eventually won, the U.S. accepted the results.
The same happened in Serbia in 2000.
When Milosevic won, the U.S. negated the results.
When his opponent finally beat him, Albright proudly told the world that the U.S. had put $42 million into the coffers of the opposition and stated that it was money well-spent.
Ukraine elections — tainted with much U.S. money and shenanigans
The recent Ukraine elections were tainted with much U.S. money and shenanigans.
Other countries have fallen into the same trap.
Haiti — U.S. did not like Aristide[Aristide refused to have an army — TheWE.biz] Aristide was the elected president of Haiti. The U.S. did not like him so they arranged demonstrations against him in Haiti [let's mention also a CIA paid invading army of criminal thugs — TheWE.biz] and eventually [the US forced him and his wife by threat onto a US taxpayer paid aircraft — TheWE.biz] paid for his one-way trip to South Africa, where he lives today in exile. Venezuela — a country that practices democracy at all levels ...How about a democratic country that practices democracy at all levels being branded a totalitarian state? This is happening right now with Venezuela. The country is more democratic today than at any time in its history and is a vanguard for future democratic movements in the world. But, the U.S. does not like Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez. In this instance, the U.S. outright lies and accuses one of the world’s leading democrats of threatening democracy. A recently-released document, called "Strategy for National Security, 2006," stated, "In Venezuela, a demagogue inundated with petrol money is undermining democracy and trying to destabilize the region." This preposterous statement is official U.S. doctrine against the president and people of Venezuela. Chavez, however, is not one to be mute in criticism of his regime. Here’s how he replied to the U.S. security report:
You (Bush) are a coward, murderer, and responsible for genocide.
Why don’t you go to Iraq and command your armed forces there?
Sounds good to me.

But he said he is worried by some assumptions in the west that Mikhail Saakashvili is “inadequate and may be mentally ill.”
“In such a case there will be no trial against him.

War in the Caucasus: Towards a Broader Russia-US Military Confrontation?

by Michel Chossudovsky
Global Research, August 10, 2008
August 7, 2008
During the night of August 7, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Georgia's president Saakashvili ordered an all-out military attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia.
The aerial bombardments and ground attacks were largely directed against civilian targets including residential areas, hospitals and the university. The provincial capital Tskhinvali was destroyed.
The attacks resulted in some 1500 civilian deaths, according to both Russian and Western sources.
"The air and artillery bombardment left the provincial capital without water, food, electricity and gas.
"Horrified civilians crawled out of the basements into the streets as fighting eased, looking for supplies." (AP, August 9, 2008).
According to reports, some 34,000 people from South Ossetia have fled to Russia. (Deseret Morning News, Salt Lake City, August 10, 2008)
The importance and timing of this military operation must be carefully analyzed. It has far-reaching implications.
Georgia is an outpost of US and NATO forces, on the immediate border of the Russian Federation and within proximity of the Middle East Central Asian war theater.
South Ossetia is also at the crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes.
Georgia does not act militarily without the assent of Washington. The Georgian head of State is a US proxy and Georgia is a de facto US protectorate.
Who is behind this military agenda? What interests are being served? What is the purpose of the military operation.
There is evidence that the attacks were carefully coordinated by the US military and NATO.
Moscow has accused NATO of "encouraging Georgia".
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underscored the destabilizing impacts of "foreign" military aid to Georgia:
“It all confirms our numerous warnings addressed to the international community that it is necessary to pay attention to massive arms purchasing by Georgia during several years.
“Now we see how these arms and Georgian special troops who had been trained by foreign specialists are used.”

Ossetia’s status
For 70 years South Ossetia, though bordered on three sides by Georgia, held the status of an Autonomous Oblast (Region) within the Soviet Federation.
[History:
The Ossetian people of presently North and South Ossetia are a combined nation-people descendants of the Alans, a Sarmatian tribe. Tualläg in the south became what is now South Ossetia.
This area was also at times part of a principality known as Samachablo that owed allegiance to a Georgian entity.
South Ossetia is part of a larger Ossetia region that became part of Russia in 1784 in an agreement with the Ottoman Empire. The Ossetia region were at that time part of the Ottoman Empire
Old Georgia was annexed by the Russia Empire in 1801. Neither of the two regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia were part of old Georgia when it was annexed.
Abkhazia, not connected to North and South Ossetia, has always been an independent people-nation. Abkhazia was incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1910.
Vladimir Lenin split the Russian empire into 15 Republics. South Ossetia was made an autonomous region within old Georgia in 1922, while Abkhazia remained a republic in its own right.
The Georgian Soviet government created by Soviet Russia in 1921 recognized South Ossetia as separate from the territory of old Georgia creating the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast in April 1922.
The Menshevik Georgian government believed the South Ossetians of assisting with the Bolshevik takeover and there was conflict between South Ossetia and Georgia.
— TheWE.biz]
Its population [South Ossetia] is 70,000.
The neighboring Republic of North Ossetia-Alania has maintained its status as an autonomous republic within the present-day Russian Federation.
The Ossetians have a distinct Persian-related language and culture.
Schools, publishing houses and theaters helped preserve Ossetian nationality within the Soviet Union.
With the collapse of socialist planning in the Soviet Union, socialist solidarity among its constituent nations broke down.
The capitalist market brought chaos and upheaval that hit hardest at the many small nationalities as the Soviet Union ended.
Contending gangs of privatizers seeking to grab hold of nationally owned property fueled and manipulated nationalist sentiment.
The reactionary, pro-capitalist leadership in Georgia suddenly abolished South Ossetia’s autonomous status and rights and annexed the small nation, as they did with Abkhazia, another small, autonomous nation strategically located on the Black Sea and surrounded by Georgia.
In the resulting struggle, South Ossetia and Abkhazia each declared their independence from Georgia in 1991.
This led to a 17-year standoff, with both Georgian and Russian “peacekeepers” stationed in South Ossetia.
The latest Georgian attack ended the standoff with a de facto attempt at annexation.
Abkhazia has similarly declared its independence from Georgia.
Georgia’s military onslaught against South Ossetia could well have spilled over into an attack on Abkhazia.
Given the scope of the operation and the active influence of U.S. forces in Georgia, it is hard to believe that Washington could have been uninformed of Saakashvili’s decision to launch an all-out war against South Ossetia.

U.S. armed, trained Georgia’s army
Washington does not claim credit for the invasion of South Ossetia ordered by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, especially now that his forces have been routed.
The roads back to the Georgian capital of Tbilisi are littered with tanks and other military vehicles abandoned by Georgian soldiers in their mad scramble to return home.
The U.S. and NATO have heavily armed and trained the Georgian military.
There are U.S. military “advisers” in Georgia today.
A thousand U.S. Marines from the Third Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment just finished three weeks of joint maneuvers there called “Operation Immediate Response.”
In the period leading up to Georgia’s attack on South Ossetia, the Pentagon had supplied Georgia with hundreds of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery weapons, rocket launchers and dozens of combat helicopters and anti-aircraft missile systems.
Hundreds of other weapons systems have poured in from other NATO members and from Israel. (Interfax, Aug. 7)
In exchange Georgia had provided the third-largest military force in the U.S. occupation of Iraq.
But on August 10, 2008 the U.S. began ferrying the 2,000 Georgian troops out of Iraq to the war zone in Georgia.
Along with the “advisers” and U.S. troops sent for maneuvers, U.S.-origin mercenaries and privatized military trainers function in Georgia.
Tens of thousands of “civil society” operatives, international consultants, policy experts and technical assistants operate in Georgia, Ukraine and other former Soviet Republics.

The United States has been providing military and technical support to independent Georgia for almost 15 years.
During this period, the overall amount of annual aid from Washington has increased by more than several hundred times, and reached its peak in the financial year till 2006.

|
NATO expansion
For 40 years the NATO military alliance was comprised of wealthy, industrialized imperialist countries that had prospered from generations of colonial plunder.
It was essentially an anti-Soviet alliance to halt the spread of socialist revolutions in Europe.
NATO used military might, nuclear blackmail, economic sabotage, espionage and terror to protect and expand the private corporate wealth of its members.
Using the 1992-1999 war against Yugoslavia to justify its expansion and intervention, NATO has now grown from 16 members before that war to 26 members and 38 nations in four different “partnership” arrangements, as Canadian Gen.
Ray Henault of the NATO Military Committee boasted in his Chairman’s Report in April.
NATO has spread its field of intervention far beyond its original North Atlantic area to Eastern Europe, Africa and Afghanistan.
Many of the new members and “partners” of this military bloc are former socialist countries from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union that have become captured ministates—economic colonies of European and U.S. imperialism.
However, the reestablishment of capitalist private ownership over the resources and production of this vast region of the globe did not pacify U.S. imperialism, which sees competing capitalist development in Russia also as a threat.
U.S. corporate power is determined to allow only dependent colonial subjects.
Any country seeking to control its own development or resources, regardless of its social system, is targeted.
This is as true for Russia as it is for Iran, China or Venezuela.

Undisguised aggression accompanied by mass propaganda war
Moscow's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, sent an official note to the representatives of all NATO member countries:
“Russia has already begun consultations with the ambassadors of the NATO countries and consultations with NATO military representatives will be held tomorrow.
“We will caution them against continuing to further support of Saakashvili.
“It is an undisguised aggression accompanied by a mass propaganda war.”
Moscow accuses NATO of having "encouraged Georgia" to attack South Ossetia, Russia Today, August 9, 2008
According to Rogozin, Georgia had initially planned to:
"Start military action against Abkhazia, however, 'the Abkhaz fortified region turned out to be unassailable for Georgian armed formations, therefore a different tactic was chosen aimed against South Ossetia', which is more accessible territorially.
"The envoy has no doubts that Mikheil Saakashvili had agreed his actions with "sponsors", "those with whom he is negotiating Georgia's accession to NATO ". (RIA Novosti, August 8, 2008)
Contrary to what was conveyed by Western media reports, the attacks were anticipated by Moscow.
The attacks were timed to coincide with the opening of the Olympics, largely with a view to avoiding frontpage media coverage of the Georgian military operation.
On August 7, Russian forces were in an advanced state readiness.
The counterattack was swiftly carried out.
Russian paratroopers were sent in from Russia's Ivanovo, Moscow and Pskov airborne divisions.
Tanks, armored vehicles and several thousand ground troops have been deployed.
Russian air strikes have largely targeted military facilities inside Georgia including the Gori military base.
The Georgian military attack was repelled with a massive show of strength on the part of the Russian military. |

US-NATO military and intelligence planners with view to inflicting civilian casualties
US-NATO military and intelligence planners invariably examine various "scenarios" of a proposed military operation — i.e. in this case, a limited Georgian attack largely directed against civilian targets, with a view to inflicting civilian casualties.
The examination of scenarios is a routine practice.
With limited military capabilities, a Georgian victory and occupation of Tskhinvali, was an impossibility from the outset.
And this was known and understood to US-NATO military planners.
A humanitarian disaster rather than a military victory was an integral part of the scenario.
The objective was to destroy the provincial capital, while also inflicting a significant loss of human life.
|
If the objective were to restore Georgian political control over the provincial government, the operation would have been undertaken in a very different fashion, with Special Forces occupying key public buildings, communications networks and provincial institutions, rather than waging an all out bombing raid on residential areas, hospitals, not to mention Tskhinvali's University.
The Russian response was entirely predictable.
Georgia was "encouraged" by NATO and the US.
Both Washington and NATO headquarters in Brussels were acutely aware of what would happen in the case of a Russian counterattack.
The question is: was this a deliberate provocation intended to trigger a Russian military response and suck the Russians into a broader military confrontation with Georgia (and allied forces) which could potentially escalate into an all out war?
Georgia has the third largest contingent of coalition forces in Iraq after the US and the UK, with some 2000 troops.
According to reports, Georgian troops in Iraq are now being repatriated in US military planes, to fight Russian forces. (Debka.com, August 10, 2008)
[London Times August 10, 2008 - Petraeus: US is flying Georgian troops into battle zone The headline of this article was sensationalized from the Petraeus interview with the Times of London or due to possible Russian action, cooler heads prevailed in the US military; Georgia troops were flown into an area outside the conflict zone — TheWe.cc] This US decision to repatriate Georgian servicemen suggests that Washington is intent upon an escalation of the conflict, where Georgian troops are to be used as cannon fodder against a massive deployment of Russian forces. |

US-NATO and Israel Involved in the Planning of the Attacks
In mid-July, Georgian and U.S. troops held a joint military exercise entitled "Immediate Response" involving respectively 1,200 US and 800 Georgian troops.
The announcement by the Georgian Ministry of Defense on July 12 stated that they US and Georgian troops were to "train for three weeks at the Vaziani military base" near the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. (AP, July 15, 2008).
These exercises, which were completed barely a week before the August 7 attacks, were an obvious dress rehearsal of a military operation, which, in all likelihood, had been planned in close cooperation with the Pentagon.
The war on Southern Ossetia was not meant to be won, leading to the restoration of Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia.
It was intended to destabilize the region while also triggering a US-NATO confrontation with Russia.
On July 12, coinciding with the outset of the Georgia-US war games, the Russian Defense Ministry started its own military maneuvers in the North Caucasus region.
The usual disclaimer by both Tblisi and Moscow: the military exercises have “nothing to do” with the situation in South Ossetia. (Ibid)
|
Let us be under no illusions.
This is not a civil war.
The attacks are an integral part of the broader Middle East Central Asian war, including US-NATO-Israeli war preparations in relation to Iran.
The Role of Israeli Military Advisers
While NATO and US military advisers did not partake in the military operation per se, they were actively involved in the planning and logistics of the attacks. According to Israeli sources (Debka.com, August 8, 2008), the ground assault on August 7-8, using tanks and artillery was "aided by Israeli military advisers".
Israel also supplied Georgia with Hermes-450 and Skylark unmanned aerial vehicles, which were used in the weeks leading up to the August 7 attacks.
Georgia has also acquired, according to a report in Rezonansi (August 6, in Georgian, BBC translation) "some powerful weapons through the upgrade of Su-25 planes and artillery systems in Israel".
According to Haaretz (August 10, 2008), Israelis are active in military manufacturing and security consulting in Georgia.
Russian forces are now directly fighting a NATO-US trained Georgian army integrated by US and Israeli advisers.
And Russian warplanes have attacked the military jet factory on the outskirts of Tbilisi, which produces the upgraded Su-25 fighter jet, with technical support from Israel. (CTV.ca, August 10, 2008)
When viewed in the broader context of the Middle East war, the crisis in Southern Ossetia could lead to escalation, including a direct confrontation between Russian and NATO forces.
|
If this were to occur, we would be facing the most serious crisis in US-Russian relations since the Cuban Missile crisis in October 1962.
Georgia: NATO-US Outpost
Georgia is part of a NATO military alliance (GUAM) signed in April 1999 at the very outset of the war on Yugoslavia.
It also has a bilateral military cooperation agreement with the US.
These underlying military agreements have served to protect Anglo-American oil interests in the Caspian sea basin as well as pipeline routes.
Both the US and NATO have a military presence in Georgia and are working closely with the Georgian Armed Forces.
Since the signing of the 1999 GUAM agreement, Georgia has been the recipient of extensive US military aid.
Barely a few months ago, in early May, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused Washington, "claiming that [US as well as NATO and Israeli] military assistance to Georgia is destabilizing the region." (Russia Claims Georgia in Arms Buildup, Wired News, May 19, 2008).
According to the Russian Defense Ministry:
Georgia has received 206 tanks, of which 175 units were supplied by NATO states, 186 armored vehicles (126 - from NATO), 79 guns (67 - from NATO), 25 helicopters (12 - from NATO), 70 mortars, ten surface-to-air missile systems, eight Israeli-made unmanned aircraft, and other weapons.
In addition, NATO countries have supplied four combat aircraft to Georgia.
The Russian Defense Ministry said there were plans to deliver to Georgia 145 armored vehicles, 262 guns and mortars, 14 combat aircraft including four Mirazh-2000 destroyers, 25 combat helicopters, 15 American Black Hawk aircraft, six surface-to-air missile systems and other arms." (Interfax News Agency, Moscow, in Russian, Aug 7, 2008)
NATO-US-Israeli assistance under formal military cooperation agreements involves a steady flow of advanced military equipment as well as training and consulting services.
According to US military sources (spokesman for US European Command), the US has more than 100 "military trainers" in Georgia.
A Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman "said there were no plans to redeploy the estimated 130 US troops and civilian contractors, who he said were stationed in the area around Tblisi" (AFP, 9 August 2008).
In fact, US-NATO military presence in Georgia is on a larger scale to that acknowledged in official statements.
The number of NATO personnel in Georgia acting as trainers and military advisers has not been confirmed.
Although not officially a member of NATO, Georgia's military is full integrated into NATO procedures.
In 2005, Georgian president proudly announced the inauguration of the first military base, which "fully meets NATO standards".
Immediately following the inauguration of the Senakskaya base in west Georgia, Tblisi announced the opening of a second military base at Gori which would also "comply with NATO regulations in terms of military requirements as well as social conditions." (Ria Novosti, 26 May 2006).
The Gori base has been used to train Georgian troops dispatched to fight under US command in the Iraq war theater.
It is worth noting that under a March 31, 2006, agreement between Tblisi and Moscow, Russia's two Soviet-era military bases in Georgia — Akhalkalaki and Batumi have been closed down. (Ibid)
The pullout at Batumi commenced in May of last year, 2007.
The last remaining Russian troops left the Batumi military facility in early July 2008, barely a week before the commencement of the US-Georgia war games and barely a month prior to the attacks on South Ossetia. |

War in the Caucasus: Towards a Broader Russia-US Military Confrontation?
|
by Michel Chossudovsky
Global Research, August 10, 2008
The Israel Connection
Israel is now part of the Anglo-American military axis, which serves the interests of the Western oil giants in the Middle East and Central Asia.
Israel is a partner in the Baku-Tblisi- Ceyhan pipeline which brings oil and gas to the Eastern Mediterranean.
More than 20 percent of Israeli oil is imported from Azerbaijan, of which a large share transits through the BTC pipeline.
Controlled by British Petroleum, the BTC pipeline has dramatically changed the geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Caucusus:
[The BTC pipeline] considerably changes the status of the region's countries and cements a new pro-West alliance.
Having taken the pipeline to the Mediterranean, Washington has practically set up a new bloc with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Israel.
While the official reports state that the BTC pipeline will "channel oil to Western markets", what is rarely acknowledged is that part of the oil from the Caspian sea would be directly channeled towards Israel, via Georgia.
In this regard, a Israeli-Turkish pipeline project has also been envisaged which would link Ceyhan to the Israeli port of Ashkelon and from there through Israel's main pipeline system, to the Red Sea.
The objective of Israel is not only to acquire Caspian sea oil for its own consumption needs but also to play a key role in re-exporting Caspian sea oil back to the Asian markets through the Red Sea port of Eilat.
The strategic implications of this re-routing of Caspian sea oil are far-reaching.
(For further details see Michel Chossudovsky, The War on Lebanon and the Battle for Oil, Global Research, July 2006)
What is envisaged is to link the BTC pipeline to the Trans-Israel Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline, also known as Israel's Tipline, from Ceyhan to the Israeli port of Ashkelon.
(Komerzant, Moscow, 14 July 2006)
“Turkey and Israel are negotiating the construction of a multi-million-dollar energy and water project that will transport water, electricity, natural gas and oil by pipelines to Israel, with the oil to be sent onward from Israel to the Far East.
“The new Turkish-Israeli proposal under discussion would see the transfer of water, electricity, natural gas and oil to Israel via four underwater pipelines.”
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite? cid=1145961328841&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull “Baku oil can be transported to Ashkelon via this new pipeline and to India and the Far East.[via the Red sea]" “Ceyhan and the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon are situated only 400 km apart. “Oil can be transported to the city in tankers or via specially constructed under-water pipeline. “From Ashkelon the oil can be pumped through already existing pipeline to the port of Eilat at the Red Sea; and from there it can be transported to India and other Asian countries in tankers.” REGNUM.ru |
In this regard, Israel is slated to play a major strategic role in "protecting" the Eastern Mediterranean transport and pipeline corridors out of Ceyhan.
Concurrently, it also involved in channeling military aid and training to both Georgia and Azerbaijan.
A far-reaching 1999 bilateral military cooperation agreement between Tblisi and Tel Aviv was reached barely a month before the NATO sponsored GUUAM agreement.
It was signed in Tbilisi by President Shevardnadze and Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyu.
These various military cooperation arrangements are ultimately intended to undermine Russia's presence and influence in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
In a pro forma declaration, Tel Aviv committed itself, following bilateral discussions with Moscow, on August 5, 2008, to cut back military assistance to Georgia.
Russia's Response
In response to the attacks, Russian forces intervened with conventional ground troops.
Tanks and armored vehicles were sent in.
The Russian air force was also involved in aerial counter-attacks on Georgian military positions including the military base of Gori.
The Western media has portrayed the Russian as solely responsible for the deaths of civilians, yet at the same time the Western media has acknowledged (confirmed by the BBC) that most of the civilian casualties at the outset were the result of the Georgian ground and air attacks.
Based on Russian and Western sources, the initial death toll in South Ossetia was at least 1,400 (BBC) mostly civilians.
"Georgian casualty figures ranged from 82 dead, including 37 civilians, to a figure of around 130 dead.... A Russian air strike on Gori, a Georgian town near South Ossetia, left 60 people dead, many of them civilians, Georgia says." (BBC, August 9, 2008).
Russian sources place the number of civilian deaths on South Ossetia at 2000.
A process of escalation and confrontation between Russia and America is unfolding, reminiscent of the Cold War era.
Are we dealing with an act of provocation, with a view to triggering a broader conflict?
Supported by media propaganda, the Western military alliance is intent on using this incident to confront Russia, as evidenced by recent NATO statements.

The Caucasus — Georgia and South Ossetia and Abkhazia
|
by F. William Engdahl
Global Research, August 11, 2008
The roots of the conflict
The specific conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia and Abkhazia has its roots in the following.
First, the Southern Ossetes, who until 1990 formed an autonomous region of the Georgian Soviet republic, seek to unite in one state with their co-ethnics in North Ossetia, an autonomous republic of the Russian Soviet republic and now the Russian Federation.
There is an historically grounded Ossete fear of violent Georgian nationalism and the experience of Georgian hatred of ethnic minorities under then Georgian leader Zviad Gamsakhurdia, which the Ossetes see again under Georgian President, Mikhel Saakashvili.
Saakashvili was brought to power with US financing and US covert regime change activities in December 2003 in what was called the Rose Revolution.
Now the thorns of that rose are causing blood to spill.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia—the first a traditional Black Sea resort area, the second an impoverished, sparsely populated region that borders Russia to the north—each has its own language, culture, history.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, both regions sought to separate themselves from Georgia in bloody conflicts - South Ossetia in 1990-1, Abkhazia in 1992-4. |
In December 1990 Georgia under Gamsakhurdia sent troops into South Ossetia after the region declared its own sovereignty.
This Georgian move was defeated by Soviet Interior Ministry troops.
Then Georgia declared abolition of the South Ossete autonomous region and its incorporation into Georgia proper.
Both wars ended with cease-fires that were negotiated by Russia and policed by peacekeeping forces under the aegis of the recently established Commonwealth of Independent States.
The situation hardened into "frozen conflicts," like that over Cyprus.
By late 2005, Georgia signed an agreement that it would not use force, and the Abkhaz would allow the gradual return of 200,000-plus ethnic Georgians who had fled the violence.
But the agreement collapsed in early 2006, when Saakashvili sent troops to retake the Kodori Valley in Abkhazia.
Since then Saakashvili has been escalating preparations for military action.
Critical is Russia’s support for the Southern Ossetes.
Russia is unwilling to see Georgia join NATO.
In addition, the Ossetes are the oldest Russian allies in the Caucasus who have provided troops to the Russian army in many wars.
Russia does not wish to abandon them and the Abkhaz, and fuel yet more ethnic unrest among their compatriots in the Russian North Caucasus.
In a November 2006 referendum, 99 percent of South Ossetians voted for independence from Georgia, at a time when most of them had long held Russian passports.
This enabled Russian President Medvedev to justify his military's counter-attack of Georgia on Friday as an effort to "protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens, wherever they may be."
For Russia, Ossetia has been an important strategic base near the Turkish and Iranian frontiers since the days of the czars.
|
Georgia is also an important transit country for oil being pumped from the Caspian Sea to the Turkish port of Ceyhan and a potential base for Washington efforts to encircle Tehran.
As far as the Georgians are concerned, South Ossetia and Abkhazia are simply part of their national territory, to be recovered at all costs.
Promises by NATO leaders to bring Georgia into the alliance, and ostentatious declarations of support from Washington, have emboldened Saakashvili to launch his military offensive against the two provinces, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Saakashvili and likely, Dick Cheney’s office in Washington appear to have miscalculated very badly.
Russia has made it clear that it has no intention of ceding its support for South Ossetia or Abkhazia.

Ossetian refugees risk lives to bring and bury their dead
August 12, 2008, 2:04

|
Over 30,000 refugees have crossed the border between South Ossetia and Russia in the last four days, seeking safety, but not all of them made it alive.
Some South Ossetians risked their lives to bring the bodies of their loved ones to North Ossetia because they were unable to bury them back home.
A refugee from Tskhinvali:
They were shooting at us from airplanes, they were throwing bombs at us. Bullets were reaching us all the way down to the basement. When we wouldn't leave our basement, they started flooding us. They burnt roofs of our homes. Even fascists didn't do that. Shevarnadze attacked us, Gamsakhurdia attacked us, now Saakashvili attacks us... They can't live there and neither can we. Why do they want that land back if no one can live there? VIDEO — To watch more about refugees from South Ossetia Click here to watch this video |

The ugly face of war
August 11, 2008, 9:24
|
|
The conflict in South Ossetia has already claimed the lives of at least 2,000 people.
More than 30,000 have been displaced.
Many of those have no idea where their families and friends are.
Or even if they’re alive.
They have no idea what will happen next.

Thousands of South Ossetians are trapped in the ruins of a city almost destroyed by Georgian missiles.
The remaining residents of Tskhinvali are huddled in cellars beneath bombed-out buildings.
They are struggling to survive — without water, food or electricity.
The death toll in South Ossetia has reached at least 2,000, according to Russian and South Ossetian sources. Georgian officials deny the figure is that high.
Twelve Russian peacekeepers have also been killed in the fighting with up to 150 others wounded.
A Russian army general was injured when his unit came under fire. There is no information on his condition yet.
In two days of intense fighting, South Ossetia claims a Georgian bomber was shot down and 12 Georgian tanks destroyed in and around Tskhinvali.
The capital is said to be almost completely ruined and without water and electricity.
|
Shelling destroyed all hospitals in Tskhinvali
The chief of Russia's ground forces says Georgian shelling has destroyed all the hospitals in the South Ossetian captial, Tskhinvali.
It's also reported that more than ten border villages have been burnt to the ground.
The Russian President, Dimitry Medvedev, said Georgia is denying the whole of South Ossetia the right to life by its actions.
He said that:
“Russian peacekeepers and military units are carrying out an operation to enforce Georgia to a peace deal.
“They are also responsible for defending of the civillian population.”
Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says the government is planning to allocate around $US 400 million for the reconstruction of South Ossetia.
Vladimir Putin:
“The actions of the Georgian leadership in South Ossetia are crime against their own people.
“A deliberate blow was delivered to the integrity of Georgia and that means a massive damage to its identity.
“It is hard to imagine after all that happened and all that is still happening they will be able to convince South Ossetia to belong to Georgia.”
The Russian Ambassador to Georgia, Vyacheslav Kovalenko, says 12 Russian peacekeepers have been killed and 70 wounded during the Georgian attacks.

People take shelter in bunkers
South Ossetia refugees fled to Russia's southern regions as people try to flee the conflict zone.
Meanwhile, thousands of people still remain in the demolished city of Tskhinvali.
Amid continuing shelling, people are sheltering in bunkers, but are said to be running out of food, and there is no water or electricity.
Russia's Emergency's Ministry has delivered the first consignment of medication to the South Ossetian capital.
Humanitarian aid and power generators are also expected to be delivered soon.
Russian military officials say the 76th Airborne Brigade of the Russian Army has arrived in the conflict region.
One section of the brigade has already flown to the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali.
Other troops will move to the region by ground transport, military sources said.
The main goal of the reinforcements, military officials insist, is to restore peace and protect Russian citizens.
Investigations due
Russia could appeal to international legal bodies for an investigation into the number of deaths in South Ossetia. That's according to a Foreign Ministry spokesman.
Meanwhile, Russia's Human Rights Commissioner, Vladimir Lukin, says an ad hoc tribunal could be set up to look into mass killings in the region.
“Who burned down Tskhinvali and made it unfit to live in within just one night?
“Who killed people, including children, in their hundreds or maybe even thousands?
“Who forced tens of thousands of people out of their homes?
“These questions remain unanswered and need to be looked into.
“It is absolutely necessary, on the international level, to investigate this problem, to find those responsible and to bring them to international trial.
“Maybe an ad hoc tribunal could be set up, just the way it used to be done for other cases of mass genocide.”
President Medvedev said all crimes in the South Ossetian republic must be documented.
|
Those accused of involvement will face criminal charges.
The statement followed a meeting with the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, in which the two men discussed the situation in the conflict area.
“We are talking about the lives of our citizens now, for which we are responsible,” Medvedev said.
No western cameras in South Ossetia
The conflict over Georgia’s breakaway republic is as much about information as it is about weapons.
South Ossetia's press service claims Western media outlets can't be trusted because they haven't been operating in the region, “since the conflict began”.
“Only the Russian media and one Ukrainian channel have been filming in the breakaway republic. No western camera crews have been working in the conflict zone,” Suslan Bekoev, South Ossetian committee for information and press, said.

Devolution is a necessary instrument of resolution for those within a larger group who no longer seek to be governed by that larger group
An individual or a grouping of individuals within the smaller assemblage must also, at any time period, have the option of remaining within the group that has chosen devolution or be allowed to move and join some other governing body; should an individual or a grouping of individuals choose to do so that individual or grouping of individuals who take this option must then move themselves and what they are able of their belongings into the territory of this other governing body who have allowed this individual or grouping of individuals to join them
Should there be two groupings in the same territory who seek devolution, but not governed as one, further devolution can, and, or, must take place based upon mutual consent of these groupings with regard to territory boundaries, territory boundaries being a natural formation of the land areas of those who live within those land areas
Should there be dispute of the two groupings in the same territory who seek devolution, then settlement of territory must be undertaken by a third non-involved governing body; this non-involved governing body to be agreed by the parties involved or in last instance to be appointed by a decision of a larger collective of non-involved governing bodies
Devolution is an inherent right for any grouping of individuals who no longer wish to be governed, for whatever reason, by an overseeing larger governing body
Should devolution involve substantial resources not within the larger body, ownership of these resources will be shared upon population count of both territories. Ownership will include decision of use or not use of resources and payments on the territory choosing devolution as compensation of loss to the larger body based upon ownership of the whole if such resources by the decision of all should be either partly or completly utilized — until such resources are exhausted within the territory choosing devolution
The Greater Galactic Council acknowledges and affirms devolution as an inherent right for all sentient beings

In the meantime, it became known that the Georgian troops conducted volley-fire cleansings of several South Ossetian settlements, where people’s houses were simply leveled.
Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, told reporters that Georgia’s actions in South Ossetia question its consistency as a state:
Civilians, including women, children and elderly people, are dying in South Ossetia.
In addition to that, Georgia conducts ethnic scouring in South Ossetian villages.

U.S. Attacks Russia Through Client State Georgia

Last year, the Georgian president commissioned from private Israeli security firms several hundred military advisers, estimated at up to 1,000, to train the Georgian armed forces in commando, air, sea, armored and artillery combat tactics.
They also offer instruction on military intelligence and security for the central regime.
Tbilisi also purchased weapons, intelligence and electronic warfare systems from Israel.
These advisers were undoubtedly deeply involved in the Georgian army’s preparations to conquer the South Ossetian capital Friday.
In recent weeks, Moscow has repeatedly demanded that Jerusalem halt its military assistance to Georgia.

Other Georgian officials reported attacks at a military base in Vaziani and a military airport in Marneuli.
Irakli Alasania, Georgia's UN ambassador to the UN, said Russia had "started a full-scale military invasion".
Tshkinvali battle
Russian tanks rolled into South Ossetia in support of the separatists who had come under bombardment from Georgian forces since a brief ceasefire on Thursday night.
On Friday, the Russian peacekeeping force in the region said it would not pullout despite losing at least 10 soldiers in heavy fighting with Georgian forces around Tshkinvali.
"We're not going anywhere and we are going to continue to fulfil the task that we were assigned," Marat Kulakhmetov, head of the contingent, said, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.
Georgia and South Ossetia have both claimed that they now control the capital, after heavy bombardments from Russian artillery had at one point reportedly pushed back Georgian forces.
"The entire city of Tskhinvali is currently controlled by units of South Ossetia's defence forces," Irina Gagloyeva, a spokeswoman for the South Ossetian authorities, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
However, that statement came shortly after Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's president, said in a televised address that his forces controlled almost all of the territory.
"Georgian forces are controlling the entire territory of South Ossetia except Java ... We are fully in control of Tskhinvali," he said.
Russian bombardment
A spokesman for Vladimir Boldyrev, Russia's army chief, was quoted as saying that Russian tank and artillery units had destroyed Georgian positions around the city.
|
"The positions from which Georgian troops were firing... have been destroyed by fire from artillery and tank units of the 58th army," Igor Konashenkov, the spokesman, said.
Earlier on Friday, Eduard Kokoity, the South Ossetian separatist leader, told Russia's Interfax news agency that 1,400 South Ossetians had been killed in the fighting.
About 1,400 died. We will check these figures, but the order of the numbers is around this. We have this on the basis of reports from relatives."
The Georgian military says it has "liberated" the area, while some sources say Tskhinvali has been virtually destroyed and Russian troops are on the point of entering the city.
Russian news agencies quoted witnesses and officials as saying hundreds of civilians had been killed.
Buildings were ablaze and dead Georgian soldiers could be seen alongside destroyed tanks in the streets.
South Ossetia government spokeswoman Gagloyeva said that Georgian forces were firing on "residential parts" of the capital.
Hospital 'not functioning'
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that the main hospital in Tskhinvali had ceased functioning.
Local medical officials told the organisation that the Respublika Hospital closed hours after Georgia launched its military offensive.
Maia Kardova, an ICRC spokeswoman in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, said the news is "very alarming" because emergency access to South Ossetia has been cut off since fighting began early on Friday.
She said ambulances are unable to reach wounded civilians in the city.
Saakashvili said he was urgently recalling 2,000 troops serving in Iraq, in response to the fighting in South Ossetia.
"One brigade of Georgian forces is in Iraq and we are calling it home tomorrow," he said.
Georgia's interior ministry said the country's air force had shot down at least five Russian aircraft, but the claim could not be independently verified.
Shota Utiashvili, a spokesman at the Georgian ministry, said: "The Georgian air force has downed at least five Russian aircraft. Bitter fighting is ongoing in Tskhinvali [the South Ossetian capital]."

GEORGIA: ALL-OUT WAR LOOMS IN SOUTH OSSETIA
8/08/08 Elizabeth Owen is EurasiaNet’s Caucasus news editor in Tbilisi Giorgi Lomsadze is a freelance reporter based in Tbilisi. Also reporting from Paul Rimple. |
|
Georgia and Russia stood at the brink of an all-out conflict August 8, after Georgian Interior Ministry units opened a campaign to retake the separatist territory of South Ossetia.
Civilians were scrambling to escape the conflict zone, amid reports that Russian armor and aircraft had entered the conflict.
Georgian Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze has said that the government will continue the campaign against South Ossetian separatists until "a durable peace" can be established in the breakaway region. [For background see the Eurasia Insight archive] Tbilisi claims that the fighting began in the early hours of August 8 after South Ossetian separatists attacked two nearby villages and peacekeeper posts, leaving several dead and wounded. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili had offered a cease-fire the night before. “To protect [the] peaceful civilian population and stop [the] military attack, [the] Government of Georgia was forced to take adequate measures,” an official statement reads. Tbilisi claims that it has largely reestablished control over the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali, in addition to establishing full control over several nearby Ossetian villages. |
|
The government charges, however, that Russian planes have begun a bombing campaign in response to the fighting.
Russian planes reportedly dropped bombs on four separate locations within Georgia: the regional center of Gori, about 25 kilometers from Tskhinvali; the nearby town of Kareli; and two military air bases outside of Tbilisi (Vardziani and Marneuli).
The Georgian Interior Ministry reports that three men were killed in the Marneuli attack.
Anti-aircraft artillery stands at the ready along the Georgian-controlled road heading from Gori into Tskhinvali.
Moscow has not yet confirmed the reports of bombing Georgian territory, though the Kremlin has warned that it will take all possible measures to defend the safety of its citizens within South Ossetia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Georgia of attempting to conduct “ethnic cleansing” in Ossetia.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, in Beijing to attend the opening of the Olympic Games, vowed that Russia would retaliate.
With Russia’s support, South Ossetia broke free of Tbilisi’s authority in 1992 following a brief conflict.
|
|
Since then, Moscow has granted Russian citizenship to a large number of Ossetians, despite the fact that the United Nations has always recognized Georgia’s territorial integrity.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev echoed Putin’s sentiments. Medvedev said in televised remarks:
“I am obliged to protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are located.
“We won't allow the death of our compatriots to go unpunished.”
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry insisted that Tbilisi would be solely responsible for the casualties and destruction.
"Bloodshed in South Ossetia will weigh on their conscience," said a Defense Ministry statement.
Amid growing international concerns that war between Georgia and Russia could be in the offing, Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidze told a morning news briefing on August 8 that Georgian forces were determined to keep pressing on.
“Our priority is the establishment of peace in Ossetian territory,” he said. Once peace is established, he continued, “the dialogue [with separatists] will continue.”
Meanwhile, Saakashvili assailed Russia for intervening.
"We are right now suffering because we want to be free and we want to be a multiethnic democracy," Saakashvili said in a television interview broadcast by CNN.
Confusion prevails about the status of Tskhinvali.
While Georgian forces maintain that they hold 70 percent of the city, separatist South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoiti told Interfax in the early evening on August 8 that the South Ossetians will retake the city “very soon.”
A tank battle with Georgian forces, he said, was taking place to the south of the city.
|
|
The Georgian Interior Ministry has denied the report.
Spokesperson Shota Utiashvili told EurasiaNet, however, that some 150 Russian tanks have moved into the district of Java, to the north of Tskhinvali. Russian planes, he added, are continuing to bomb Georgian positions near the town.
Many of the claims and counter-claims by Georgian and Ossetian leaders cannot be independently verified.
EurasiaNet correspondents traveled extensively in the conflict zone
Access to Tskhinvali is blocked and phone lines from Tbilisi are not functioning.
However, EurasiaNet correspondents traveled extensively in the conflict zone and report that the situation remains fluid and dangerous.
The bombing was not limited to the conflict zone.
About 25 kilometers outside of Tbilisi, a pair of bombs left two gaping craters at the military base of Vavziani, a facility recently renovated with US assistance.
There were no casualties.
“I came here with my son since he was called to duty as a reservist,” said 50-year old Mediko Pirtskhalava.
“And then out of nowhere this jet came.
“There was a terrible explosion and we all lay on the floor for safety.”
From a relatively safe position near the Georgian village of Ergneti, local and international journalists watched the shelling of nearby targets as the Tskhinvali area was constantly covered in smoke.
|
|
Fighter jets flew overhead and fired ordinance at various targets.
It was difficult to determine which planes were Georgian and Russian.
However, Georgian Ministry of Defense press officer Nino Rusadze believed a barrage of jet-fired missiles west of Tskhinvali towards Tamaresheni and Ksuisi were aimed at Georgian positions there.
“Georgia controls three villages there. Two are Georgian and the Ossetian one was brought under control last night,” she said.
A EurasiaNet correspondent witnessed a jet dive and fire missiles toward Mereti, a Georgian village southwest of Tskhinvali.
As a group of journalists traveled in the direction of the village, women and children were being packed into taxis and minivans, and heading toward safety.
Mereti was full of Georgian troops.
Getting closer, a standard truck-type personnel carrier burned, as shots could be heard nearby.
Villagers confirmed that a plane had fired missiles at the village and had hit two trucks.
No deaths were reported, but wounded soldiers could be seen being evacuated.
|
|
Elsewhere, residents of the Georgian controlled village of Tamaresheni, contacted by telephone, said they were waiting out an artillery barrage in their basement.
Later, a group of journalists visited the former factory Kombinat, site of an alleged Russian jet bombing in Gori.
Zurab Totalidze, a watchman at a telephone transmitter, witnessed a plane fly overhead and drop a bomb in the vicinity of a Georgian village south of town and return to drop a bomb in Kombinat.
He believes the telephone transmitter was the target. “It happened so fast I didn't have time to be scared,” he said.
In Gori, calm prevailed, despite a heavy presence of armed interior ministry troops.
Outside one hospital, guarded by rifle-toting troops, relatives and friends of wounded troops gathered in the early afternoon to gain what information they could from hospital staff through the hospital gates.
Fliers where placed on a tree in front of the hospital listing the names of 96 wounded troops.
A line under one name indicated the death of a soldier.
Hospital staff member Ilia Chorgolashvili told EurasiaNet that there were up to a hundred wounded troops treated at the hospital.
|
|
“Now it’s a bit calmer, but they have been bringing in scores of wounded military in the night,” said Chorgolashvili, his rubber gloves covered in blood.
“Some of them are beyond treatment….
“Those who are given emergency treatment are taken to Tbilisi to give place to the new arrivals.”
A bomb, dropped earlier, allegedly by a Russian warplane on the outskirts of Gori, sent the hospital staff into panic, he added.
“We thought that was it,” Chorgolashvili said.
At 3pm Tbilisi time, Tbilisi Mayor Givi Ugulava declared that Georgia would observe a cease-fire for three hours to give civilians a chance to exit Tskhinvali and other points in the conflict zone.
Many residents of villages in the vicinity of Tskhinvali were leaving their homes, piling into city buses or minibuses; others refused to leave, but evacuated their children.
In the village of Tkviavi, a few kilometers shy of Tskhinvali, a group of villagers stood together chatting and watching Georgian troops.
“They kept shelling our village all night long and this morning,” said one resident, in reference to separatist forces.
“Jets were darting very low over the houses,” he added showing a part of what he thought was an exploded mortar.
Zaur Edisharshvili, 52 year-old resident of Megrevski, a Georgian controlled village bordering Tskhinvali, said his neighbor's house was totally destroyed.
He also said residents have sent their children away, while everybody else stayed behind despite the constant shelling nearby. “I told me wife to go too, but she stayed.
All our women stayed,” he stated.
A woman hitched a ride with EurasiaNet car to travel closer to the front lines to bring back her grandchildren from a village nearby Tskhinvali.
“Now it’s calmer but I fear it is going to erupt again in the night,” she said.

South Ossetian bloodshed claims hundreds of lives
August 8, 2008, 23:03
|
|
More than 1,400 people have been killed during Georgia's attacks on the capital of South Ossetia, according to the region's authorities.
The breakaway republic is calling on the world community to recognise it as an independent state.
Meanwhile, Moscow says Russian artillery and tanks have now suppressed the Georgian firing positions around Tskhinvali.
Meanwhile, the assistant to the Chief Commander of Russia's ground forces says fighting is continuing in capital Tskhinvali.
At least 12 Russian peacekeepers have died as a result of the violence, and 150 have been injured.
Tskhinvali is said to be in ruins after a day of violence.
South Ossetia has called Georgia's attacks ‘genocide’.
|
Thousands of refugees from the self-proclaimed republic have arrived in Russia, according to the country's Migration Service.
Georgia launched a major military offensive against South Ossetia on Friday in a bid to regain control of its breakaway province.
Heavy artillery pounded the capital Tskhinvali for hours, reportedly reducing much of the city to rubble.
South Ossetia then appealed to Moscow for help.
Russia’s Defence Ministry has been quoted as saying Georgian troops have killed civilians captured during fighting.
President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered Russia's emergencies ministry to supply humanitarian aid to those injured in South Ossetia.
He said Russia will protect its citizens in South Ossetia at all costs, as tension between Georgia and its breakaway region broke into heavy violence.
"It is my duty as president of the Russian Federation to protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens, wherever they may be."
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, currently on a visit to Beijing for the start of the Olympics, warned that Georgia's actions would meet a "response."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has claimed there is evidence of ethnic cleansing in villages in South Ossetia.
Lavrov also said the latest developments in South Ossetia cast doubts over Georgia's status as a responsible member of the international community.
He called last night’s events and “an aggression”.
“Georgian peacekeepers, who were part of the same contingent with the Russian peacekeepers were firing at their comrades.
“It was absolutely unacceptable to see residential quarters shelled, to see a humanitarian convoy that was trying to reach the people in need bombed from the air.
“And many villages, including those outside the zone of conflict, are being attacked by the Georgian troops using artillery, tanks.”
The Transport Ministry has announced the suspension of all commercial air services between Russia and Georgia from midnight on Friday.
Georgian claims

|
Meanwhile, Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili has announced a general military mobilization in his address to the nation on Friday.
He urged all reservists to report to duty.
He has accused Russia of bombing Georgian territory, a charge which Moscow denies.
“During the whole day, Russian jet planes have been continuously attacking Georgian towns — I have to stress, outside the conflict zone.
They have been continuously attacking the town of Gori in the middle of Georgian that has nothing to do with South Ossetia.
They have been attacking villages all around Georgia.”
Elsewhere, the head of Georgia’s national Security Council said:
“If Russia indeed sent its troops to Georgian territory, it means we are at war with Russia.”
And according to the Georgian Interior Ministry, Russian aircraft have dropped two bombs near the Vaziani military airbase in a Tbilisi suburb.
No injuries have been reported.
Civilian fears
Refugees have been fleeing the region since fighting began early on Friday.
Residents in Tskhinvali say the attack caught them by surprise.
Vadim Bagaev told RT that the city was burning in clouds of thick black smoke.
“Around midnight, massive shooting began.
“They appeared to have more long-range weapons and we were not able to resist.
“We had to fall back.
“When I was leaving the city — half of it was occupied by the Georgians.”
“A lot of the buildings are ruined and are on fire.
“The whole city is clouded with black smoke.
“It’s impossible to count the casualties, but I think it’s in the hundreds.”
Russia's Federal Migration Service says it’s ready to receive refugees from the hostilities.
Meanwhile, in Georgia, standby troops have been gathering casually in the capital Tbilisi, in a seemingly relaxed mood.
Some of them were reported to have been called to sign up straight from work on Friday afternoon.
Reservists have been similarly called up in other Georgian towns and cities. |

STEEL RAIN
What you would never guess is that "carelessness" meant a deliberate U.S. policy of waging the war on terror from the air.
Robert C. Koehler, Tribune Media Services
July 21, 2008
|
"Civilian casualties have been a continuing issue in Afghanistan, and President Karzai has rebuked American and NATO forces for what he has called carelessness in their military operations."
This is the genteel, bloodless language of geopolitics, spoken by the Gray Lady and the heads of state and makers of policy whom she serves.
You wouldn't know that "carelessness" referred to killing a bride (and twenty-some guests) on her wedding day, except that the observation comes at the end of the New York Times' account of our July 6 bombing of an Afghani wedding, which followed a Fourth of July missile strike in that country — look at the fireworks, Mom! — that killed 15 innocent civilians.
Careless superpower indeed.
Careless murdering superpower indeed
What you would never guess is that "carelessness" meant a deliberate U.S. policy of waging the war on terror from the air.
But that has been our policy all along, from "shock and awe" and "mission accomplished" to "the surge is working."
It is undebated, unreported, unquestioned, this policy conceived with the vacuous single-mindedness of serial killers.
The death it has caused has not been calculated and is perhaps incalculable, especially when you factor in the time-bomb effects of depleted uranium and other deadly substances that bombing spreads both locally and around the world.
To my mind, nothing, not even the torture we practice at Guantanamo and throughout the war on terror gulag, exemplifies the disconnect between U.S. policy and the American people like the sanitized horror of the air war.
When the Nazis dropped 50 tons of explosives on the Spanish city of Guernica in 1937, the world called it barbaric.
Today, such a pummeling of some hapless Third World region is routine, transformed by an embedded and co-opted media into "humdrum ordinariness," as Tom Engelhardt has pointed out.
Colin Powell had Picasso's "Guernica" covered up
(You'll recall, of course, that Colin Powell, when he lied before the U.N. General Assembly about Iraqi WMD shortly before we invaded, had the tapestry reproduction of Picasso's "Guernica" covered up to avoid any awkward triggering of conscience.)
That we have lost control of our government, money-dominated and obsessed with secrecy as it is, is less surprising to me than the extent to which we have lost our watchdog media, which can't even rouse itself awake long enough to spot the patterns in its own routine coverage of the war.
Shall we take a stroll down Memory Lane?
"Ooh, that's gotta hurt," I recall a colleague of mine saying back in mid-March of '03, as the invasion got under way and the shock-and-awe campaign played nonstop on the tube.
They found one boy's body on the roof of that house
The relentless air assault on Baghdad killed untold Iraqis but utterly failed in its intended purpose of "decapitating" the Saddam Hussein regime, killing not a single high government official.
In April 2003, we got word that Hussein and his two sons were meeting in a building in the Mansur district of Baghdad.
Within 45 minutes, we flattened the building with four high explosive bombs, creating a crater 40 feet deep and killing an unknown number of people, but not Hussein or his sons.
"They found one boy's body on the roof of that house over there," an Iraqi later told a reporter.
"I heard that the father went out for ice cream and wouldn't let his children come with him.
"When we came back, they were dead.
"He must be dying of grief."
Shortly before Christmas 2003, USA Today, in a rare instance of independent war coverage, published the results of its four-month investigation of cluster bomb usage in the first months of the war.
10,800 cluster weapons; their British allies used almost 2,200
"Although U.S. forces sought to limit what they call 'collateral damage' in the Iraq campaign, they defied international criticism and used nearly 10,800 cluster weapons; their British allies used almost 2,200," reporter Paul Wiseman wrote.
Describing the "steel rain" that devastated the central Iraq city of Al Hillah, he noted that images of the aftermath, "including footage of a baby torn in half, were so gruesome that Western television networks refused to air them."
Back to Afghanistan, where Taliban-hunting with bombs and missiles has been commonplace.
University of New Hampshire professor Marc Herold, who monitored the early phases of the war, wrote in 2002 that "the documented high level of civilian casualties" is caused by "the apparent willingness of U.S. military strategists to fire missiles into, and drop bombs upon, heavily populated areas of Afghanistan."
Seven children died
One example, from about a year ago: We bombed a school in eastern Afghanistan; seven children died.
A Pentagon spokesman explained: "If we knew that there were children inside the building, there was no way that that air strike would have occurred."
We can't wage war without a wide moral latitude.
The public has limited capacity for collateral damage even in the abstract, and none at all for actual details, such as babies torn in half by cluster bombs.
But this is the war on terror, [See comment above and below — TheWE.biz] which we will never win [We cannot win something that never was — TheWE.biz] until we face the truth about what we're doing and stop doing it.
Forever.

It has taken me until now to view this great masterpiece that chronicles the planet's true history
But I am glad for this delay as my awareness of reality, and the events that seemingly must unfold to educate humankind, have come from sentience off planet — now with this movie the circles merge
A movie par excellence, it will likely be considered the most significant in the downfall of the rich and powerful who control the world and rising politicians already in their pocket — the imprisonment of all those who seek to bring forth this horror, this enslavement of 'New World Order'

Questioning War, Organizing Resistance — Carol Brouillet Glen Clancy, from Victoria, Australia, created "Fool Me Twice" described as 'A documentary about the Australian government's lies about the East Timor massacres, the cover-up of the Bali Bombings and subsequent anti-terror laws.' The 25 year old, Clancy is Australia's Dylan Avery (of Loose Change fame). The work was originally created to be viewed online, but Clancy is working on improving the resolution for larger screen and theatrical viewing. Glen wrote (at the Fool Me Twice Blog on December 4, 2008)
To all,
After discovering 911 was an inside job, through such movies as Loose Change, Terrorstorm and Zeitgeist, I decided to investigate the Bali bombings. The evidence was overwhelming. There had been a cover-up.
As shocking as the truth may be, please keep an open mind while viewing this documentary. FOOL ME TWICE is 100% sourced. Please see reference list below. I tried to produce a documentary as true to the genre as possible, limiting opinion and simply documenting the facts.
I believe that 911 Truth is one of the most important movements of our time and exposing the cover-up of the 2002 Bali bombings can help destroy the "911/War on terror/Al-CIAda" myth.
Please help spread this information.
Kind regards,
Glen

Americans are politically paralyzed by both cognitive dissonance and by what psychologists call “learned helplessness,” the result of years of having one outrage after another foisted upon them, without there ever being any real accountability.
So, as many truthers have discovered, the most common reactions of average Americans, when presented with the facts of 9/11, are either, “My government would never do that,” or, “Okay . . . but what can anybody do about it?”

Before that he was with the City of Sacramento as a Firefighter Paramedic.
He first began working in Emergency Services in 1988 in the Sacramento area with a 911 private paramedic ambulance company.
He has 20 years experience in Emergency Services.
He earned my pilot's license in 1987, and have been recreationally flying since.
He graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics from the University of California at Davis in 1993, with 2 years of elective Engineering courses, and a Minor in Psychology.
Erik wrote a moving account of his own shift in consciousness regarding 9/11 which prompted him to start Fire Fighters For 9/11 Truth entitled: MAYDAY...MAYDAY...MAYDAY.
Here's an excerpt:
I, like most Americans, remember exactly where I was when I saw the attacks and had the overwhelming urge to take action.
I was shocked, outraged, scared and confused.
I called my Battalion Chief and asked if Seattle would be sending any teams to help.
I was a member of the MMST, and figured we would be needed and I wanted to know where to report.
Due to the nature of the incident we were not called up, and instead USAR teams, including Seattle's, were sent.
|
|
I first visited Ground Zero in October of 2001 with several firefighters from Seattle.
We went to pay our respect and show support.
We raised money for our brother firehouses and attended the funerals of our fallen Brothers.
I was deeply moved and humbled by the community support, the sheer enormity of the tragedy along with the courage and compassion of the FDNY "Brotherhood."
I vividly remember the anger, the intense desire for vengeance, the feelings of helplessness
Even though I listened to their stories for days, I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and tragedy they suffered on that day and the years to come.
I vividly remember the anger I felt, the intense desire for vengeance, and the feelings of helplessness.
I was relieved when the government identified the terrorists and satisfied that we were going to have a swift deliverance of "justice."
I've been a conservative my entire life; a registered Republican since I could vote.
I am a self proclaimed Patriot with George Washington as one of my all time heroes.
So when conspiracy theories quickly surfaced, and "Liberals" cried foul on the erosion of civil liberties, I chalked it up to their political beliefs and bitterness towards the Republican President.
I read many debunking articles — including Popular Mechanics — and watched many debunking videos including, Farenhype 9/11.
I was convinced that these "Liberals" were misinformed and were grasping at straws to discredit the "official" story.
Don't confuse me with the facts, I have my mind made up!
Like most people with strong opinions, instead of looking at all the facts, I was specifically looking for anything that supported my own beliefs.
|
|
As soon as I discovered any inaccuracy in a conspiracy claim, I wrote it off.
My father, a big city cop and Korean War veteran, loved to say, "don't confuse me with the facts, I have my mind made up!"
Well, I had my mind made up.
I told conspiracy theorists like my own Truck Officer, Lt. Earl Emerson, that they were insane if they thought anyone other than the terrorists did this.
Bin Laden confession tapes — how much clearer did they need it
Heck, we have ID cards, security camera videos, Bin Laden confession tapes — how much clearer did they need it?
The years went on and I was satisfied in my beliefs.
I even believed these "Wackos" that doubted the "official" story were distracting our country from focusing on the real threat of terrorism...
Fast forward to March of 2008.
A great friend of mine with a Business degree from West Point, as conservative and non-conspiratorial as they get, came over one night to talk about what he saw happening in the economy.
Began researching such things as economies, who is in control of currencies
He provided some disconcerting evidence that we as a nation are at risk of entering into another depression; he pointed out historical parallels where other countries, such as Germany, suffered economic collapse.
THAT was my eye opener.
I became obsessed researching things such as economies, who is in control of currencies, what causes depressions, who profits during war, etc.
So many things kept pointing to 9/11.
Another one of my dad's favorite quotes was, "believe half of what you see and none of what you hear."
So, I looked at both sides and quickly noticed a pattern.
On one side, the general media ignores some of the most compelling evidence that contradicts the "official" story...
When I voiced my new opinion and concerns most of my friends listened.
Shocked that a staunch Conservative could have such a major shift
I think because they were shocked that a staunch Conservative could have such a major shift, or because they thought I had lost my mind and wanted to diagnose the cause.
|
|
Curiously, some became angry at my new questions and actually thought I was supporting Terrorists with my concerns.
Being a part of that same mindset myself only a few weeks ago, and then having a major shift in consciousness, really shook me to the core.
What has happened to our collective consciousness that we believe anyone who doubts the "official" story or what the government tells us is an enemy?
What has happened to us — are we not founded on Freedom of Speech and taught to check our Government?
Anyone who asks for the Truth is labeled a "Wacko" or "Terrorist Sympathizer?"
What has happened to us?
Are we not founded on Freedom of Speech and taught to check our Government?...
To be honest, I was asleep at the wheel, and relied on what I was being told by mainstream media.
The same media whose parent corporations, are some of the largest suppliers of weapons in this war.
Before this "awakening" I had no idea the extent of our civil liberties that had been eroded in the name of Terrorism.
I had never really wrapped my brain around what legalized torture means.
I had always claimed America was noble.
Just look at how we treated POW's during WWII and Vietnam compared to our enemies.
[Ever check out the real story of John McCain as a POW, keep investigating! — TheWE.biz]
That separated us.
We were setting the example of Human Rights to the rest of the world.
[Check out the real facts of US instigations in Central and South America! — TheWE.biz]
Sure, you'll always have individuals that will take things too far, but Government sponsored torture?
[Let's mention CIA activity across the planet since its inception, including inside the US, and other black budget US government special operations agencies! — TheWE.biz]
What has happened to our country?
What kind of example are we setting for our children, and the world?
You would be interested to learn how many of our own rights have been stripped away recently.
Look up the Military Commissions Act of 2006, John Warner Defense Authorization Act, Homegrown Terrorism Act, Presidential Directive 51.
Amazing the rights we have all lost
It is amazing the rights we have all lost in the past couple of years and very little is covered by the U.S. media.
After discovering this, I applied the "common sense" test that my Grandfather always said wasn't so common.
|
|
Why would a government so aggressively suppress truth and blatantly destroy evidence if there was nothing to hide?
Why has every testimony from sworn government and military officials that points to "prior knowledge" been stricken from the 9/11 Commission Report?
How did paper business cards, cloth bandanas, and plastic ID's that implicate the terrorists survive so neatly through jet fueled fireballs hot enough to destroy titanium and steel?
I've seen bodies burned beyond recognition, yet I have never found one that was wearing unburned clothing.
These questions alone are enough to make me risk everything for a real investigation and accounting...
When I truly realized the enormity of the effect 9/11 has had on our Rights, our Economy, our Beliefs, our Fears, our Intolerances and our Government — I felt fear, then anger, then the need to take action.
Bill Chickering said it best:
“Anger is a very appropriate and necessary response to an injustice.
“But stand back now; the truth, clearly spoken, is always your best weapon.
“Calmly spoken, it can burn a hole through the hardest heart.”
When I realized the extent of the force and attitudes working to silence those who peacefully ask questions, demand answers, and seek truth, it became clear to me that our Country is in serious trouble and I must now stand alongside those Patriots who seek Truth and Constitutional Restoration.

Richard Gage, AIA is the founding member of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth ae911Truth.org.
He has been a practicing Architect for 20 years and has worked on most types of building construction including numerous fire-proofed steel-framed buildings.
He is employed with a San Francisco Bay Area architecture firm and has most recently performed Construction Administration services for a new $120M High School campus including a $10M steel-framed Gymnasium.
Currently he is working on the Design Development for a very large mixed use urban project with 1.2M sq.ft. of retail and 320K sq.ft. of mid-rise office space — altogether about 1,200 tons of steel framing.
He has been one of the most tireless speakers on the issue of 9/11 truth, and more specifically on challenging the official narrative of the disintegration of the 3 major skyscrapers in the World Trade Center complex that took place on September 11th.
He has been lecturing widely across the US and in Canada.
Those who see his presentation rarely walk away still thinking that fires alone could have brought down the buildings.
When NIST came out with a report recently that fires were responsible for the destruction of WTC7, Richard and Architects and Engineers were quick to challenge that report.

Aside from the NYT's reporter and a media request from Bulgaria, the press has tried to ignore the serious criticisms that Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth has raised about their reports.
Richard Gage gives an insightful interview on major points that scientifically do not agree with the official story of 9/11.

9/11
By all accounts, the unprecedented events of September 11th, 2001 changed the way our country functions, and in turn, the world.
It is therefore critical that conscientious Americans, as well as people around the globe, understand these events in detail.
Unfortunately the official reports, including The 9/11 Commission Report and the NIST WTC Report, written by those working under the direction of the Bush Administration, have been proven to be elaborate cover-ups.
Film: 9/11 Revisited
September 11th Revisited is perhaps the most riveting film ever made about the destruction of the World Trade Center.
This is a powerful documentary which features eyewitness accounts and archived news footage that was shot on September 11, 2001 but never replayed on television.
Featuring interviews with eyewitnesses & firefighters, along with expert analysis by Professor Steven E. Jones, Professor David Ray Griffin, MIT Engineer Jeffrey King, and Professor James H. Fetzer.
This film provides stunning evidence that explosives were used in the complete demolition of the WTC Twin Towers and WTC Building 7.

Humankind as we know it at the 'End Point'
Don't forget:
Behind it all is the desire for depopulation — by those rich enough to have their islands for temporary residence while depopulation takes place.
Doesn't matter if it is killing in the fight for food when the trucks no longer arrive at your local supermarket.
Doesn't matter if it is tribe against tribe.
Or thermobaric bombs — environmentally friendly compared to nuclear. Bombs that send ultra-sonic shock waves and searing fireballs to destroy everything in their dropping wake.
Or those special bombs that do not destroy the infrastructure — kill only you and those you love.
You are in the way, folks!
There are too many of you!
This is the plan.
